Lightsaber in space...

I hope Lucas paid well for that... Nasa needs a good publicity boost and could use some extra cash.

Is it not sad that in this time, we are more surprised by acts of love than acts of hate?

I know it's an original, but it's still just a movie prop. They're treating it like it's a dignitary from a foreign country. Honestly, I hope they lose it too. It's a stupid publicity stunt to get Lucas in the news along side NASA.

They do that for the 30th anniversary, yet we have no OOT remastered in anamorphic on DVD and the CDs we're about to get are probably just repacks. How about spending the same amount of time and effort on those things and getting proper releases to your fans instead of being a media whore.

I'm really really starting to hate Lucas.

Luke's force saber throw in space from the opening chapters of The Truce at Bakura comes to mind. Yet Obi-Wan and Anakin couldn't just nudge those buzz droids off, much less use those crazy powers from Jedi Starfighter. Sorry, I'm getting off topic.

But that would've made sense and ended the movie in a much shorter time frame. We can't have that.

Well, that certainly makes that space shuttle mission extremly important and worthwhile...*rolls eyes*

Sure we can.

NASA has been carrying junk up into space just to say it was there for decades. This is nothing new, or demeaning to the space program. It might even help to raise awareness among the kiddies.

I wonder what such an item would fetch on ebay...

Edit: Err... I mean... Why isn't Mark Hamill making the presentation?

That's the part that is most embarrasing about the whole deal.

It isn't real - Star Wars didn't really happen - there aren't really lightsabers. Fuck - they're taking a fake thing into space! Maybe next time they can take an ET doll.

Regardless of it being "real" it is still an iconic movie piece and part of cultural history.
Of course this is coming from a prop collector so I would say that.
And just for clarity the piece in question is the Obi-Wan ANH/Luke ROTJ shared stunt saber so has more significance to me at least.

"six-part sci-fi classic"

Since when were TPM - ROTS considered classics?

It is kind of silly all the fuss they make about this stupid thing. It use to be just going to space was a pretty exciting thing, it is funny that now something that is a really amazing feat in reality has to turn to a work of fiction to bring attention to it. Just think how much more this sabre prop is going to be worth once it has been in space.

That was the same lightsaber handle used in both films? I didn't know that.

There were several hilts used for Luke in ROTJ one of which was an old Obi-Wan stunt saber from ANH which was repainted and used as a stunt for Luke.As far as I know there were two main hilts used for the stunt work and for costume and then the so-called "hero" saber which was machined and used only for the insert shot of Vader examining Luke's saber when he says "I see you have constructed a new lightsaber" which was added in post-production.

now that is a prop i would not mind owning.

i mean what is more famous in movie history as far as props go than star wars.

what is cooler than star wars props?

i wish i owned a master replica elite limited edition of lukes saber from jedi, nice piece indeed. the only thing i'd rather have is the saber shown in unsung hero's by the prop maker. the one in jambe's returning to jedi. it comes apart and has a crystal inside, frickin sweet!

Do they still have Alec Guiness saber in the archives?

how many of the movie sabers were given to the actors or were stolen?

My Luke ROTJ hero saber replica is one of only three made by Norman Harrison (the man who created the original sabers) since the end of filming. As close as you can get to the real deal outside the LFL archives.Got it signed by Mark Hamill at CE-pics on my site in replica section.
The piece you are talking about in Returning to Jedi has been the subject of much controversy in the prop world as the Harrisons claim it was made for filming a scene in which Luke builds his own saber in Obi-Wan's hut on Tatooine. It wasn't.It is a piece that was never delivered to Lucasfilm and has details which are not consistent with a piece that would have been made during or for filming. The crystal in the hilt is green and as many of you good folks in particular here will know the saber was originally meant to be blue and was only changed to green in post when it did not stand out clearly enough against the sky on the sail barge scenes.
It is a very nice saber but was not made or intended for use in the production and, despite what the Harrisons and ElstreeProps say,is a replica also.

The ANH Obi-Wan saber is gone as are most of the props from ANH.Very little remains fron ANH prop-wise as most of the pieces were destroyed after filming.Just thrown in bins out the back of Elstree. In fact there are no sabers from ANH in the archives.

Ugh! That's awful. I'm surprised GL didn't make sure everything was kept.

At the time it was felt there was no need as it was not thought there would be any more movies made. There's actually, and perhaps more surprisingly, very little from ESB in the archives also.ROTJ is well represented in the archives though. If anyone is interested in a tour video of the LFL archive I have a link somewhere I could find and post? Some pretty amazing stuff in there. Also for those interested in this sort of thing:

Some great stuff and contributions from collectors including the ANH Death Star model.

That is surprising. Especially since Lucas had known since 1972 that he was going to make 12, err...9, uuh...3 films, uh, uh, 6, uh.
