But could most of us really tell the difference?

Here's a roughly apples to apples comparison between HD and SD:

This paramount deal really screwed over consumer... it looked like one format was starting to emerge as a real leader.... now not so much.

So no, anyone with a TV smaller than probably 40" won't be able to tell the difference.

I personally don't care if we don't get a Transformers 2 and I care even less if Bay doesn't direct it. The first one, while being an ok movie, wasn't all that great imo. Sure, it had great CG, but the rest was kind of lame. For the first half of the movie, the Autobots were pretty dumb. Seriously, the kid tells them to hide so they all transform into cars in his backyard. How stupid is that? It wasn't really until the second half of the movie that it actually picked up and got good.

Anyway, the more time that goes by with two formats, the more people are going to stop caring and just wait for the next best thing. I'm honestly hoping that they both do fail at this point. Maybe this time the industry will learn that if you have two formats competing that are completely incompatible with each other that the format is doomed to failure. I guess we'll just have to wait until this Christmas to see what happens.

Both the DVD and Blu-ray screencaps are 720 x 405 (Blu-ray is resized ofcourse). So the DVD could have been as good as the screencaps of the Blu-ray disc. In other words, that dvd transfer sucks.

Check out the "ZOOM" link above each picture set... not exactly 1080p but they're almost 720p

I did the same kind of side by side comparison with my projector, ps3, and denon upscaling dvd player and qualitatively I say that roughly thats about the difference in clarity. In motion it looks even better becuase you don't have the artifacting that you see with mpeg2 and DVDs.

I missed the zoom function. Thanks.

mpeg2 artifacting sucks even laserdisc did not have this fault.

Laserdisc video was analog so there was no digital compression... so the comparison is apples to orangutans...

I'm not sure if I like how everything in the background in those Pirates 2 blu-ray screens is so much sharper. And some of the bright spots also seem to have really harsh edges instead of a gradual glowing area. I know it's not edge enhancement but it sure looks like it since the blu-ray screens just look more crispy. I was hoping the high definition release would show more of a clearer image with less compression rather than a sharper image.
The only reason I'm excited about blu-ray is because it has 5 times the capacity of dvd. I could honestly care less about the high definition capability. I'm surprised it hasn't been used for tv show season releases since the episodes could fit on one disc rather than four or five. It's annoying having anime shows be 4 episodes to each disc separately released when an entire season fansubbed can fit onto a data CD, good quality too! I also think blu-ray could have more potential for televised sports games to get video releases. Many dvd sets for the official championship video have not only season highlights but some of the best games in their broadcast entirety. Most sports games like that run about 3 hours which is difficult to fit onto one dvd. And many of the existing games released have very noticable compression. Most movies run 2 hours which is easy to fit onto a dvd. Many that are 3 or longer are split up onto 2 discs.
And hang on. The Blade Runner dvd will have 5 discs in the most elaborate set. Why will the HD releases also require 5 discs for the same stuff? Surely it could all fit on 3 blu-rays at the most.

I agree. shows like The X-Files could be on fewer disc's.

I was thinking how cool that first commercial for the blu-ray star wars dvd's would be like:
first the screen is black.. then you hear Vader's Breathing then a lightsaber sound turns on and we see the screen gets cut fast to show the Blu-Ray logo! then fade to black.

Man if Lucas would only go the Blade Runner route... Work print, theatrical, directors cut, ultimate edition all in one set

As for the link to the screen shots I posted... I'm not aware of any screen grab utilities directly on the pc for blu-ray stuff... so they may have been takinng pictures of their projection screen directly... which adds another level artifacting... so the comparison between the DVD and Blu-ray is still accuraate since they both have the same additional level of artifacting but the "true" pctures of each medium will be sharper.

Those HD screen captures are resized, compressed JPEGs. Trust me--they're not representative of what Pirates really looks like on a 1080p display that's properly calibrated. The actual Blu-ray presentation is smooth and film-like with lots of fine detail, not artificial sharpness.

Because they're taking advantage of the space on Blu-Ray to give you a higher bitrate movie with a better codec. Yeah, they could squeeze a couple versions on one disc in the old mpeg2 codec (or use a lower bitrate), but Blu-Ray has already taken a ton of flack on their early releases for doing that (they used a higher bitrate, but it was still the old crappy mpeg2 codec).

If I had a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player, I would most certainly rather have the movie in a much higher bitrate with a modern codec than to have the same movie in a lower quality older codec.

The point of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is not necessarily to squeeze more content on the disc. The point is to give you higher quality. You simply cannot get the same level of quality out of standard DVD. Most of the time there's plenty of space left for more content (commentary, cut scenes, bonus material), but that's not the purpose of the extra space or the new codec.

Probably the main reason you're not seeing a lot of TV shows or anime series on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD (Heroes is the only one I can think of) is because of the lack of penetration of the players. Let's be honest. Even with the high selling rates of Blu-Ray players and discs, it's still nothing compared to the level of penetration of standard DVDs. When these players become available and are a little more affordable, you'll see the penetration increase and then TV shows will start showing up more.

I know about the increased quality with Blade Runner but still. There are three dvd's that have the different cuts. Final, all previously released and workprint. That could take 3 discs just like the dvd but why do we need the extras (besides the deleted scenes) in high definition? I don't care about seeing people talking in 1080p. Wouldn't 720p less compressed with a better codec/higher bitrate and more space already look much better than if it was squeezed onto a dvd.
And I thought there already was a player that could play both HD and blu-ray. Is it not that good or too expensive, why hasn't it caught on more?

It costs $1,200 if I recall correctly. The price on that one's being lowered a couple hundred when the next one with support for BD-J and HD's other special thing comes out, which will be $1,300 IIRC.

So yeah, it's a bit expensive.

Because that earlier player doesn't fully support the HD-DVD spec. The new one that's coming out will have full support for all HD-DVD features.

I don't think the extras in the Blade Runner set are in hi-def. I'm pretty sure they're 480p only.

So wait, you'd rather have a hi-def movie in 720p than 1080p? What kind of hi-def set do you have? My set will do up to 1080i. Personally, I'd rather have the 1080p than the 720p. The higher the resolution the better.

The link I posted previously wasn't quite what I was looking for. LG is releasing another player that is fully compatible later this year, but I can't find a news story on it right now.

So apparently Paramount and Dreamworks are now exclusively HD-DVD. Fuck a goddamn duck. All I wanted was Transformers on bluray....now nothing.

The primary thing that's evil about the HD-DVD versus BD war is the copy protection nonsense and BD is worse on that end. Still, it's the superior format and should win. Hopefully it will.

I can't wait to see Microsoft get a powerful punch in the gut. The way they pretend to know so much is laughable to me.

Sony is evil. Neither Toshiba nor Microsoft has ever put such nasty software on computers that was so bad that it took a reformat to get it off.

Sony can burn in hell.
