That could take 3 discs just like the dvd but why do we need the extras (besides the deleted scenes) in high definition? I don't care about seeing people talking in 1080p. Wouldn't 720p less compressed with a better codec/higher bitrate and more space already look much better than if it was squeezed onto a dvd.
And I thought there already was a player that could play both HD and blu-ray. Is it not that good or too expensive, why hasn't it caught on more?

Because that earlier player doesn't fully support the HD-DVD spec. The new one that's coming out will have full support for all HD-DVD features.
I don't think the extras in the Blade Runner set are in hi-def. I'm pretty sure they're 480p only.
So wait, you'd rather have a hi-def movie in 720p than 1080p? What kind of hi-def set do you have? My set will do up to 1080i. Personally, I'd rather have the 1080p than the 720p. The higher the resolution the better.
The link I posted previously wasn't quite what I was looking for. LG is releasing another player that is fully compatible later this year, but I can't find a news story on it right now.
