Idea & Info Wanted: Kiss Meets the Phantom Edit???

This goes out to any Kiss fans that have recently picked up the Kissology Vol 2. As some of you may know, this box set included a beautifully restored “European Version” of Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (entitled "Attack of the Phantoms) While this edit is by far the better cut of the film, it would be great to make an extended version of this film with the scenes from the US version spliced with Attack of the Phantoms. Changing some editing around. (Some of the scenes were placed in weird spots that made no sense, concert footage was edited poorly as well)

I have NO editing skills but I do have both versions of the movie on DVD and a pretty good idea of what needs edited where. So my question is this: Are there any Kiss fans that would like to help me out with a Fan-Edit that includes as much of both movies as possible (there were 2 slightly different endings for this movie)

Anyone interested please PM me.

Never seen either. I didn't even know there was an alternate cut. I do love old KISS though.

Ironically that is supposedly how the idea for the film was pitched to the band. P. Stanley: "it was supposed to be a cross between A Hard Days Night and Star Wars".

The film is pure camp and you really have to be a fan of camp to enjoy it, too, it's so awful. The dialogue is as tedious as you can imagine, the acting is worse. As for the story, the band members have super powers. A mad scientist makes an evil robot twin for each band member in a plot to destroy the band, have the bots assume their identities, and presumably conquer the world.
P. Criss's lines were completely overdubbed because he was so trashed. A. Frehley substituted his lines for bird sounds (really)...eventually he got pissed and quit before all his scenes were filmed, so at least one scene has a black guy in makeup filling in.
Concert footage has to be less than 5 minutes total (presumably a last-ditch effort to prevent the film from appealing to fans), but it does include the evil robots doing a Kiss song with new evil lyrics.

So yeah, don't think the Holiday Special can just claim the worst ever title unchallenged.

There's little question he was trashed during filming (he and Ace were both pretty far gone during this period), but the true story behind his lines being dubbed by another actor is a matter of some debate. Most dialog in a production like this is looped -- re-recorded in post-production. The official story is that Peter refused to show up to the looping sessions, so it was necessary to have another actor record his lines. Peter has denied this, claiming to have shown up for all the looping sessions. I'm not aware of any authoritative proof either way, but I'm more likely to believe the former than the latter.

I don't believe that's correct. Those "bird sounds" are scripted. When Ace was interviewed by the screenwriters, the only word he would say to them is "Ack!" (Because he's a weird dude.) So they wrote his part that way. Ace nearly quit the film when he realized they hadn't given him any real lines, so they wrote him some.
eventually he got pissed and quit before all his scenes were filmed, so at least one scene has a black guy in makeup filling in.

That's his stunt man. But you're right, he was required to fill in for one scene after Ace stormed off the set.

That's an odd conclusion to draw, but yes there is not as much concert footage in the film as one would like. It's my understanding the international version ("Attack of the Phantoms," as released on Kissology II) contains more concert footage than the US release. It's supposed to be a vastly different edit (and markedly more watchable, for whatever that's worth).

But yes, it's a bad movie.

Avoid infestation. Rotate.

Wow... I didn't know this was finally out on dvd officially! I'll be picking up the Kissology set tomorrow!! I know that movie is horrible, but when I was a kid in the 70's I loved it! Can't wait to see it again!

This could be saved If more "KISS" music and live footage could be put into this film and the Scenes Re-cut to make them move faster. I remember not enjoying this as a kid, because "KISS" was not in it. As for plot and story, this move was made for the 10 - 14 year old "KISS ARMY" market. It my be fun to edit in scenes from the 1977 movie "Rollercoaster", as the action takes place at the same park (L.A.'s Magic Mountain)... But, most of all more KISS music must be put in. There should be KISS music playing in the background of almost every scene.

The European version actually does have the solo albums as background music which I thought was really cool to do and actually works. There is minimum concert footage but there is concert footage available from this period that could be spliced in for a more complete show.

KISS Meets the Phantom fan edit Trailer…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKTYGckQLiU

Full info:

Last summer, I rose to the challenge raised on a KISS message board of creating a fan edit of KMTPOTP/AOTP that attempted to make the film a little less “cheesy”. I initially scoffed at the idea, but after a second thought I decided to take a stab at it.

What is this version:

The film is completely (nearly shot-by-shot) re-edited using virtually every frame (and bit of dialog) from both KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park and Attack of the Phantoms. The vast majority of the footage is taken from the Attack DVD in KISSOLOGY 2, which has been upscaled to 1920x1080 (HD). I have also kept the original ratio this time (which is a bit wider than the standard 16:9 format). Everything else comes from the best source of KMTPOTP I could find. No amount of color-correction, AI or filtering will ever match the Attack footage, short of an actual film transfer, but I’ve done my best to make it less distracting than it would be if I just dropped those shots in here and there.

I ultimately decided to remove all the non-film live sequences I had added to the Halloween version. This was comprised of Largo 77, the A2 promo film and various 8mm clips. I originally wanted to give it a bit more of a concert film feel, but decided it was too distracting and a bit much for the flow of the story. I DID however use not only the original film(s) live footage, but also most of the Valencia outtakes which actually were filmed for the movie. This means we get a short “Love Gun” sequence and a bit of “Firehouse” to give the fire-beathing context.

ALL of the music has been remixed for the live sequences (with tracks isolated and then remixed to match the film performances). Rather than studio lip-syncs of everything except for a very rough version of “ISYL” we have all live music for the concert sequences. “ISYL”, “SIOL” and “LG” use remixes of the A2 versions, “RARAN” is from the LA Forum 77, with “Black Diamond” ending and “Firehouse” using remixes from ALive!. The intro/credit sequence uses a brand-new mix of “RARAN” I did using Double Platinum, DTK and Alive! which features the full arrangement including the Ace solo from Alive! to make a studio version of this version. Along with all of the original video from the film it also uses most of the Alive II promo footage. The ending credit sequence uses a remix that is comprised of drum tracks from DP and Alive! to create a new “studio” version with beefier guitars and live vocals. The footage used is Largo '77, various 8mm '77 clips, Land of Hype and Glory footage, etc.

Most of the background sound FX were also re-done using various samples and clips I grabbed from YouTube. With a couple exceptions, all of the fight sequences and other non-live scenes use various remixes I did from isolated tracks to create (mostly) instrumental versions of songs from Destroyer thru the '78 solo albums. As mentioned in previous posts, “Beth”, for example, is a brand-new version I created using a finger-style guitar part combined with live vocals rather than the (acoustic) studio track that appears in the original films. “Rip and Destroy” uses a remix that uses "Alive! and the film’s vocals, along with many more mistakes, feedback, etc to create what, to me, is a more realistic version of “Robot KISS” fit for the anger and boos it receives. And yes, I was tempted to use a “current KISS” backing track as a little inside joke but decided '70s KISS was a better choice. Other songs accompany various character and work as their “themes” (not lyrically necessarily). Sam and Melissa have “Easy Thing”, Devereaux has “I Can’t Stop the Rain”, Gene has “Man of 1,000 Faces” and various versions of “Almost Human” accompany the robots throughout the film. I really did want to include WAY more KISS music than the original film, since music is a huge part of KISS. Rather than shoe-horn in solo tracks that didn’t particularly fit the scenes (and especially after I removed the additional live sequences) I looked for creative ways to include a good sampling of (mostly) their '77-'78 era catalog. The soundtrack for this new edit includes (if only in part) these songs…

“Almost Human”
“Baby Driver”
“Beth”
“Black Diamond”
“Christine Sixteen”
“Easy Thing”
“Firehouse”
“Fractured Mirror”
“Got Love for Sale”
“Hold Me, Touch Me”
“I Can’t Stop the Rain”
“I Stole Your Love”
“Ladies Room”
“Love Gun”
“Makin Love”
“Man of 1,000 Faces”
“Ozone”
“Plaster Caster”
“Rip and Destroy”
“Rock and Roll All Nite”
“Shock Me”
“Shout it Out Loud”

Enjoy!
