I see the reference to 2001...but after that, you've lost me.

I get it. Don't like to wish death on anybody though :-(

Personally I hope GL has many happy years to come and he doesn't get done in by diabetes or anything. Heck maybe he'll even have a change of heart over the next dew years, realise his directorial failures and let somebody talented do the next ones :-)

I'm not wishing death on anyone - far from it.

I was making a joke about how that's when we will all be allowed to see the OOT in it's proper form. In Soylent Green, just before they die, the people are shown movies of how the world was before mankind ruined it - so they can die peacefully.

Anchorhead, I've been meaning to ask this for quite a while (and forgive me if someone else already has). Is your sig a reference to "The Wind That Shakes the Barley"?

I honestly haven't. I always get the reference when someone says "It's people! Soylent Green is people!". I get that. I did not get this because I've never seen the movie.

No, it's the first chapter in the NPR Star Wars Radio Drama. The chapter with all the characters and scenes that were filmed then dropped from the theatrical release (Camie, Fixer, Biggs, Treadwell, Luke seeing the opening space battle while he's out tending to the vaporators, etc).

I know you were just making a joke :-) BTW Soylent Green is one of my 70's favourites. CH made some damn good sci fi in the 70's!

Yeah, really, I'd rather NOT get the OOT if the condition is Lucas leaving the earth; I mean, seriously, how sad would it be if a person had to die so that I could get some DVDs that I wanted?

Oh, and guys?

SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!

I hope they do not make more.....the main part of the story is over...

The whole point of SW is for Anakin to bring balance to the force...that happened in Jedi...story over....

I don't see why Lucas can't write some new, original material....I'm sure he has something up his sleeve...he needs to leave SW and Indy alone and do something new...well, maybe he could give the OOT in good quality first, then move on from SW.

No, the whole point of SW is for Luke to redeem his fallen father. That happened in Jedi. Story over.

Perhaps you were thinking of something from another set of movies that look similar to SW, but share absolutely none of the story.

The whole point of Star Wars was Luke rescuing the princess and blowing up the Death Star.

As long as we're on this kick, the whole point of the Star Wars Trilogy is to show a younger generation not making the mistakes of their elders. The conflict is intergenerational, but it is also optimistic. On the one hand, you have the old people:

Darth Vader
Emperor Palpatine
Governor Tarkin
Ben Kenobi
Yoda

On the other hand, you have the young'ns:

Luke Skywalker
Princess Leia
Han Solo

The old geezers are vying for the loyalty of Luke, who represents the young generation. There are two geezer factions: the Dark and the Light. The Dark Side represents the real-world establishment: they control the government and the military, and they have all the real-world power in the universe. The Light Side is sort of an idealistic paleoconservative group: they represent the "good old days" of the Republic, elegance, knighthood, and a desire to destroy evil. Each side attempts to indoctrinate Luke into their way of thinking. As the protege of the last Jedi, the son of Darth Vader, and a military hero, he is perfectly positioned to legitimate either point of view.

Luke creatively chooses a third way. He adopts much of the discipline and techniques of the Light Side, but not its harshness. He is not so much interested in destroying evil, which he probably views as hypocritical in light of the Light Side's peaceful philosophy, as he is in reaching out to the lost. Against the ardent advice of his two Jedi tutors, he obeys the love and hope in his heart, and is ultimately rewarded when that love is reflected from his father's heart.

Love, hope, these are the keys that both camps in the geezer faction lacked. They Dark Side sought control through fear and mass violence. The Light Side, from what little we know of it, sought control through direct if somewhat judicious violence. Luke, given the power of life or death, declined to exercise it and merely sought rapprochement with his enemy. The Republic fell, the Empire fell, but a young idealistic man lived to enjoy the company of his friends surrounded by tall trees and the smoky songs of their celebration.

Exactly! Unfortunately Anchorhead, I am afraid that there are a bunch of spin offs and prequels and sequels based off that great film known as Star Wars and it has muddled this whole thing quite a bit. But all it takes is going back to the original to see how simplistic the story is, boy rescues girl, saves the galaxy, and everyone has a good time enjoying a great story.

So true C3PX.

When the weather is just right, and I have the day to myself with no interruptions - I pour myself a drink, get a snack, settle in on the couch and I do just what you mention - have a good time enjoying a great story.
