i just recently won auction from ebay for original trilogy widescreen on VHS (1995) release, i’ve been told its a rare item? and GL wont re-release again, so it’d be wise not to sell it again? i also do have special edition on widescreen '97 release. pls advice me the market price or collectibility of each versions pls? should i keep both or resell them?

Ah, a very nice set indeed. And, no, it will not be rereleased. I'm assuming this is in that wide, flat, black box where the tapes lay side by side? I've got the same set. It won't be rereleased because this is the pre-Special Edition version of the films that George Lucas likes to say "do not exist anymore". That is the whole reason for this site, to convince him to release those versions of the films on DVD. We firmly believe that those versions do exist and that GL is just being stubborn.

Fight the good fight. And enjoy those tapes. Make duplicates if you can just in case.

I'll see what I can do for you. It's a US (NTSC) VHS widescreen set for the Faces edition. The fullscreen cases came in a stacked box the way the SEs did (tapes stacked face to face). In this set, the tapes lay side by side.

Here's one pic (flash glare is bad, though) of the outer box...

Here's a better one...

well..mine one has got full shot of obi wan, luke and darth on each covers and at the bottom part has got a widescreen picture shot. so GL claims this original WS do not exist anymore? how could that be? i saw in the interview in SEs, he said the old film stocks are ruined or something? i guess mine's not a boxed set tho. its coming in 3 separate factory sealed covers. is it still worth to keep? so the new DVD releases in 2005 or late this year will be only the SEs?

I'm sure the ISD set is better. More info packed within. But I'll take my set and be quite happy with it.

NRG, I'm not sure what set you have. Can you take some digital shots or find the shots on eBay and post them? If it's a set you like, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't keep it. Value is a very subjective term.

mine would be australian version. i'd like to attach the pics but i need to host somewhere if u could tell me where can i host pics for free i'd attach them in the future. the covers looks something like half shots of luke, obi wan and darth with their lightsabers and just below them has got widescreen picture frames. so i guess u all said its worth to keep it? i was quite regret in the beginning just after i won the auction, i was actually thinking i was bidding for SE Widescreens.

I have never seen that set before but it looks pretty bad ass. I'd keep a hold of it, if I were you.

I have that set but without the pics on the front cover. It came in a 3 sided cardboard box with Vader on the side, and shiny red writing.
That version of the Trilogy is the same as the IDS boxset.
I think it was the last version released before the SE!

That is a sharp looking set. I'd definitely hang onto it.

thanks for your kind suggestions, i guess i'll keep it, it's still in factory sealed.. should i open and watch it at least? would we get really good price on them one day as vintage or something? because for now after years later it's been released i got this set for dirt cheap price at Australian 30 odd bucks. if i keep longer in plastic would i be selling it in future for 10 bucks or 100 bucks?

If you've already got a copy of the OT (pre SE) on VHS or whatnot, watch those and keep these sealed. However, if this was my only copy of the OT, I don't know if I would be able to stop myself from tearing in and watching them.

These are almost identical to the set released in the UK. The text and certification at the bottom of the cases were not present. The THX certification text at the top of the pic where at the bottom on the UK versions. Nice set though NRG_2000. My advice would be to keep them shrink wrapped. If you think about it, this set is now 9 years old, nothing to be sniffed at. I'm guessing very few people have kept them in this condition. If you are intent on watching the 'Original (and best) Versions' I would suggest getting a cheap used edition on Ebay that you can watch over and over again to your hearts content.

So haow much do you think the OT rentals are noe going for??

I bought all 3 films from our local Video store when they fist got released. This was way before "sell thru" was available.
TESB alone cost £56.00 at the time......This was in 1984
Jedi cost about £60 in 86.
Can'y actually rember getting Star Wars. But I know it's an original rental release.

Then I bought every release of the OT there after!!

I suppose like anything else its dependant on condition. According to Steve Sansweet “Video collecting is not at the top of ‘Collecting’ at the moment, but give it time”. There is definitely more interest in them at the moment, as its still the only way of watching the ‘Original Theatrical Versions”. EBay prices seem to fluctuate drastically with some sellers pricing at £50-£80, while others price at £9.99. I’ve picked up some ‘Original Rental’ copies for less then a tenner. They will become more collectible when DVD finally sees off VHS, and the format itself will become a retro part of the past.

I have just bought the following set from ebay (Uk editions):

What i really want to get hold of is the OT widescreen editions. I'm sure the editions I've just bought arn't what i'm looking for but they were cheap and I wanted at least one version of the trilogy. Does anyone have an image of the UK OT widescreen releases so i know what I'm looking for?

Thanks.

It is cool, but it doesn't seem to fit in a set with the other two. Maybe it's just me.
