Pokemon: making the dub more like the original (Released)

 (Edited)

I just realized that in a sense, even though none of my work on this was video-related, my current first/second-season dual audio experiments on Pokemon were in a way fan edits.

My connection’s clogged a bit now so this’ll be slow.

Fanedit sample clip from Pokemon ep.78

Along with the project of subbing the series, I’ve been working on making dual audio possible. I’ve also started tweaking the series audio … putting the original songs into the dub where they go, restoring slaps, etc.

This clip is from episode 78 (“Fire and Ice”), and features:

1. Added footage (Ash and Pikachu walking through the festival, Pikachu plays with a toy Cubone)
2. Changed song (from Viridian City to Type:Wild - someone said he heard the Japanese version playing during the deleted scene, after that scene, I cut over to the English version of the song)
3. Different signs (4KIDS crudely cgpainted over a sign that read “POKEMON THE MOVIE” to read “POKEMON IN LOVE”; the original sign appears in the re-edited clip)

This is probably a good example of what I’m trying to do. It’s a before-and-after clip. 12 MB, XviD.

This is something I have always wanted. Dual audio episodes on the Pokemon Episodes!

Actually, I have 1-12 of the current season (Diamond & Pearl) on my tracker (usotsuki.info:6969) now. Dual audio.

I'm debating whether to also put up the "Mezase Pokemon Master" clip from episode 92 ("Stage Fight") that I did originally.

i would say it's worth a try. the show dual audio to insert into the released sets i have would make a nice bonus.

The problem is that the released sets aren't exactly uncut. :/

Originally, I managed to plug holes in one episode (#27 "Hypno's Naptime"), while holes in 9 ("The School of Hard Knocks"), 18 ("Beauty and the Beach", which was very heavily edited), 66 ("Snow Way Out!", which had some cuts due to Meowth lighting a lot of matches) and 78 ("Fire and Ice", which had a small timecut) couldn't be restored. By replacing the song in episode 78, I was able to add the original uncut scene (which had no dialogue) to the episode. The other episodes are fillers, though I'd like to eventually add them.

Actually, I'm close to having a usable ep.9 - it just needs a single line of dialogue added.

In the 4KIDS dub, the opening scene ends with Brock saying "Maybe if you spent less time arguing and paid more attention to where we're going, we'd already be in Vermillion City by now. Come on, we're already late. We've got to start the show!" (an uncharacteristic fourth-wall breach by Brock), and Pikachu waves. Circle out. Title card.

Now originally, instead of Brock saying "Come on, we're already late", etc. - Pikachu's trying to get everyone's attention in the line before, and at this point there's the circle out. Then Misty grabs a hammer and whacks Brock with it, saying something at him between her teeth. (I still have to find dialogue to put here.) Episode resumes as usual.

In the current test dub, the line goes "Maybe if you spent less time arguing and paid more attention to where we're going, we'd already be in Vermillion City by now. Come on!" and Misty whacks him.

Success

This clip is from episode 9 and compares the original dub with my edit. Misty's new line "Will you shut your mouth?!" is modified from a line in "The Totodile Duel". Pikachu goes "chu" earlier, the circle-out happens earlier. Brock gets it in the head but good. Owch.

I have made one other modification to this episode, in one place, and might do it elsewhere as well. Some of Pikachu's lines, originally recorded by Ikue Otani, were tracked by Rachael Lillis (the voice of Misty, Jessie and Jigglypuff). Her Pikachu sounds like it's on helium; the voice is more suitable for a Jigglypuff than a Pikachu. Go figure.

This reduces the number of S1 episodes with dubs in need of footage insertion to 2 (18 and 66). 18's just about hopeless because of how much was edited. 66... I don't think it's likely.

I know it's a bit early in the game to be making requests, but have you considered fandubbing the "Lost Episodes?" Another fandubbing group has done a rather impressive dub of the "Legend of Dratini" called "Safari, So Good!" It is available for download on a site that shall not be mentioned here (Google is your friend). A member of the Psypokes board claims to have done a dub of the infamous "Electric Soldier Porygon" episode entitled "It Went Data Way!" (I love that title), but it is not available for download and he does not respond to my PMs. As far as I can tell, no one has attempted a dub of the "Ice Cave!" or "Ash and May: Heated Battles in Hoenn!" episodes. Think you can fill in the three remaining holes?

Of course, that still leaves "Shaking Island Battle: Barboach vs. Whiscash!", but since that episode never aired and no bootleg copies are to be found, there's little anyone can do that doesn't involve a highly orchestrated break-in to get the negatives.

Again, just a thought I had!

Casting is the trick. I would like to fill in those gaps, though. (As well as one shot in episode 101 which was cut, and several cut shots in episode 18.) Neither of these clips used new voice work. The additional line in episode 9, "Will you shut your mouth?", is actually taken from episode 153, with heavy modification. Finding someone to sound like Rodger Parsons is the hardest part!

BTW - subtitle of episode 3 coming in a few days if all goes well.

Like to add that rumors abound about ep.35 airing on some small UPN stations back in '98 and 252 on some UK station. I have no evidence, so take them with plenty of salt.

I was wondering - do you know where I could get copies of some of the banned/unreleased episodes with English subs? Namely:
Slowking's Day
The Legend of Dratini
Electric Soldier Porygon
The Ice Cave!
Shaking Island Battle! Dojoach VS Namazun!!
Ash and May! Heated Battles in Hoenn!!

Did anything ever come of the Japanese version of the first movie being preserved?

Thanks!

Oh sure, I've got an avi stashed. That's no big deal. (Keep losing the working script though. I might get Mendinso or someone else onto it.)

Ep.18 (Aopulco Vacation- there's a script somewhere, an old sub, otherwise, I haven't seen anything.
Ep.35 (Legend of Miniryu) - there's subs floating around, I don't know who by.
Ep.38 (Computer Warrior Porygon) - Excal subbed it, if you can find it.

The other eps that weren't dubbed (252 - The Icy Cave and AG120 - Satoshi and Haruka! Heated Battles in Hoenn) aren't subbed either.

The Whiscash episode that would have been AG101 was never aired, not even in Japan. We're lucky the preview aired by accident somewhere (TV Osaka?) and was capped. :/

Yadoking's Day... #PocketMonsters subbed that. (I'd like to do my own sub of it eventually.)

I have all of these that can be had, but none of them are subtitled.

Hi Molly, thanks for getting back! Is there anyway I could get copies of the ones that have been subbed? Are there any plans to sub these rare episodes that haven't been done, or to do them again even better?
Author
Time
Yep.

Easiest way's IRC. My subbing group has a fast bot with the 2 eps we've done (and will have a third sometime this week). But I can also find some other way if need be.

For those waiting on the subs, episode 3 is in final quality check. Expect torrent by tomorrow morning in the usual places.

Hi Molly!
Sadly right now my only internt connection is at work and when I go and visit my parents a couple of evenings a week - so don't have IRC access. Is there another way I could get these from you? Might be a pretty cool torrent - all the rare and banned episodes that never aired in English, with the subtitles.

XD

I'll see what I can do about subbing those eps, though I'm trying to work in order. (The first such episode, "Aopulco Vacation", is still 15 eps away.)

Episode 2 is still seeded (tracker at po.zdebel.com reports 2 seeds, 0 peers), episode 1 torrent wasn't reloaded and was long dead anyway. I can see how to get you the file(s) - IM, temporary ddl, dunno.

Amazing. A thread about fanediting the dub to be more like the raw's wound up turning into a thread on my group's fansub... rofl

Well, subbed ep.3's up on po.zdebel.com if you want it...

Some irony for you.

The video track of the US and Netherlands releases of Destiny Deoxys is said to better reflect the original version than the Japanese DVD.

I'm planning to conflate the Netherlands release with the Japan one.

Those clips are great! I had planned similar projects for Pokemon.

I did the same thing to Snow Way Out! I just made up some lines for what I thought they might say in the English version during the match scene in the igloo. I played as James and my sister played as Jessie and I re-arranged Meowth's lines. I have it recorded on VHS somewhere. I also want to dub all of the skipped episodes into English.

Also, I have the Japanese R2 DVDs of the first 3 movies which have selectable English or Japanese dubs. Those are pretty cool not only because of the audio, but also the fact that they are widescreen, unlike the US releases. The First Movie also has the complete Mewtwo's Origin that plays before the movie, and no glitch that has Bulbasaur? appear twice during the opening credits. Movie 2000 has an extra scene with Tracey describing why the explosion is about to happen. When viewed with English audio, this scene has no audio and a subtitle "NO SOUND IN ENGLISH VERSION". I'd like to re-dub that scene as well.

I don't think the rest of the movies have dual audio releases. I'm trying to find a widescreen copy of the English version of movie 4, since I hear there were additional scenes animated for the English release that are not on the Japanese DVD.

The only official English release that I know of contains English and Japanese audio is the GameCube game Pokemon Channel.

Doesn't everyone...

I have them too, and the music may be extractable from the Japanese 5.1 stream.

Except for the first movie, all PAL releases of the movies are widescreen. (But not necessarily the shorts; German mov.6 DVD has the short in fullscreen and the feature in widescreen, for example.)

Get the PAL version (see above). I'll probably have an AVI of it soon.

Movies 6-9, while not dual audio, are pretty much uncut, and I have resynched the English audio to the Japanese versions. Movie 9 even got widescreen here in the US, complete with the Toho bumper.

I think I've heard of that.

That's pretty cool. I haven't seen the later episodes and movies but plan to catch up on them later. Do you plan on making DVD versions of the movies with dual audio?

I think I've heard of that (Pokemon Channel for GameCube).

I forgot something about Pokemon Channel. I meant that the Pokemon short included in it, Pichu Bros., you can unlock the Japanese audio to that short in the American GC game.

Given DVDISOs of both versions I may make DVDISOs with dual audio. But no subs, unless someone can provide me with them (and my software doesn't break like it did on Ubuntu!)

Yes, I've heard of the thing with the Pichu Bros. short. I have one Pichu Bros. short in both English and Japanese but I don't think it's the same one. ("Fuusen soudou", or "Balloon Mayhem"; aka Chron 20 "Trouble in Big Town")

One minute clip from Destiny Deoxys English/Japanese comparison (6.4 MB)

Assuming the English version was based on the original masters. we have these 4 changes in the Japan DVD release *in this one minute alone* (which is why I picked this particular clip):

1. Handwritten sign (misspelled "for LaLuze" visible) in the original version was replaced with a computer-drawn sign reading "PARK[...]" and "B-T GARDEN"

2. Handwritten sign (Shopping Pl[az]a) replaced by a 3D computer-drawn sign (in 2 shots)

3. Haruka (May)'s eyes are blue in the original version; the Japanese DVD release shows them as black

4. "STATION" sign redrawn in CG

I wonder if, like Sailor Moon R (a particularly infamous example), the first printings were of a botched or incomplete master, which was then recalled and replaced with the superior version that later appeared on Japanese DVD, while the English-language licensee was given the inferior version.
