2007 Star Wars DVD Collection Release

Hey.

There is a 16-disc set in the works for September, guys. This is just what I heard from my boss who attended a DVD conference recently. There's also going to be 'transforming case' packaging for a collector's edition of "Transformers" and of course 3 different editions of Blade Runner. Blade Runner being: 2-disc set, 5-disc set and 5-disc set with collectible packaging.

So, this in Australia, but the word about the Star Wars mega-set was for a US release. I imagine that if it does end up being the 16-disc set that it'll make its way here shortly afterward.

Wonder if anybody else in the industry can confirm this?

I'm sorry I don't know much about your sock.....what line of work are you in and what's so special about your boss?

Why would he be privy to this info? What's so special about September? Rumors suck.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Well, I work at a store that sells DVDs and my boss, the DVD manager, attended a DVD managers conference for all DVD managers Australia-wide (just for our chain of stores I believe). The studios presented their upcoming titles as well as informing about future (christmas) sales promotions.

A handful of promotional things went on:
* Wilfred was walking around and took the stage at one point
* There was a video message from the cast of Knocked Up promoting their upcoming DVD
* Another video message from Kenny

The main thing however, was the presentations (think powerpoint here) of new titles. A lot of the cover art was not yet allowed to be public and hence they do it this way to stop people from taking photos and stuff. There was a number of titles of interest for the coming months, though many that I can remember are 'complete collections' for TV shows:
* Blade Runner: Final Cut (2-Disc, 5-Disc, 5-Disc in Deckard briefcase - see below)
* Transformers (2-Disc, 2-Disc with tin, 2-Disc with transforming case)
* Complete Family Guy Box (Seasons 1-6, Uncovered, Freaking Sweet Collection, Happy Freaking Christmas)
* Complete M*A*S*H Collection (same as the stateside one, different packaging I believe? Glad we're gonna get it)
* Complete Six Feet Under Collection (may've had special packagaing, need to check)
* Repackaged James Bond Ultimate Collection (now includes Casino Royale, probably current release with revised cover art, and Casino Royale branded poker set)
* Die Hard Box Set (Special Editions of all 4 films, to replace the current money-making 3-film, single-disc each set)
* Rocky Complete Collection (replaces the current box set by including Rocky Balboa and better packaging. Also comes with Rocky "Italian Stallion" gown)

Remember, this is here in Australia. I will talk to him again tomorrow and see if he remembers any of the cool stuff and post again. I know he mentioned the "Cloverfield" trailer being shown. He may have also seen other footage from the film, will double-check.

Anyway, this isn't to stir people up. I just thought you guys should know that there are plans and things happening for a Star Wars megaset, which contradicts the official word we've heard all year. The word from Fox was that because its still at that uncertain stage that it could end up being a smaller set or that it might be delayed. However, they were mentioning it to say that it was probable an Australian release would follow. He did say that they made a point of the set being "every version / every format" or something to that effect - basically, the original and SE versions of the film (plus a ton of extras).

Here are the two pics of the Blade Runner collection that were mistakenly put up early on EzyDVD several months back. The press release for the US R1 versions have been made available at DVD Active now, but EzyDVD's page listing caused a stir back when there was no concrete info. You can see the pics and that original preliminary info, still here.

I do remember always hearing that any DVD set, has to be announced roughly 3 months before the release date, to give stores time to promote, advertise, and make space on their shelves. If you said it was a November release, then it could still happen, but it is almost August, and still nothing about any DVD set. I remember the '04 boxset was announced in February, and the '06 boxset was announced in May.

Anyway, I hope you are right, cause if this rumor is true, I think we can finally enjoy the movies again.

Over on the front of The Digital Bits's front page at the moment there is mention of a rumor that at ComiCon this set will be announced. Hrm. I do agree its a bit late for it to come out in September. Let's hope that it is coming out though and that it will be before xmas this year.

If it doesn't include the OOT, what the hell difference would it make?

I'm sorry if I came off as pissed or something but it just didn't make sense to me.

Why would Lucas miss the biggest marketing opportunity for Star Wars this decade by not releasing the mega set on the anniversary date? Why wait 4 months and then release the DVDs.....you don't need a degree in sales and marketing to know that was a major boo-boo....And if this set is released in the USA first as you claim then why isn't there anybody from the states saying the same thing? Surely there would be someone here who has a buddy or a friend of a friend that would be privy to the same foreknowledge as your boss but even sooner.....

I hope its true but the problem is we have seen people post these rumors here before, and time and time again they turn out to be worthless.....

Now if you came on here and said that you saw the promotional materials in the back of the store and had a date when your store was to expect its first shipment...that would be different.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

The Digital Bits also had this in their update yesterday:

"While we're talking Fox, you may recall how we mentioned a few days ago that Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum told audiences at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Europe recently that the Star Wars films wouldn't be released in high-definition until one format emerged a winner. Industry sources have informed us that McCallum also added that if the high-def format war isn't resolved soon, the company might skip high-def disc altogether and release the films in HD via download only. Yikes!"

I wonder if they're seriously contemplating an HD via download only possibility. I can see them doing it, but it would probably only be available via iTunes. If they did it, it would definitely be revolutionary (who else is doing that right now?) and it could be seen as a way to push the industry forward into that arena.

I assume that the comic-con thing is the massive Young Indy DVD set due this christmas. They announced it last month but haven't really promoted it yet, so this would seem to be the big "Lucasfilm DVD presentation" at comic-con. I would like to believe that its Star Wars but it just seems really unlikely at this point, unless its just a literal collection of all the pre-existing releases into a new box. I know LFL got flack for not releasing the "saga" thing but if they had really done something special the way the Blade Runner release is then they would not have cancelled such a large undertaking, and if its a spontaneous response to all the "wheres the boxset" flack it is likely on another repackage (which is exactly what we dont want). I guess we'll see but all Digitalbits said is that its a Lucasfilm DVD conference, which as i said is almost assuredly the big Young Indy multi-volume release this year.

A 16-disc set doesn't make much sense. 2-discs per movie times 6 movies = 12 discs. OOT + SE + PT + bonus disc for each = 18 discs. OOT + SE + PT + PTSE = 12 ...and so on... It doesn't add up. I will have to agree with Zombie on this one.

Somehow I don't think LFL would count the DVD releases of the PT as PTSE. So it'd more likely be 2-discs per movie for the OT (OOT + SE)=6 discs + 1 disc each for the PT = 9 discs + 1 bonus disc for each movie (6 discs total)=15 discs. And even if they wanted to include theatrical and "special" versions of the PT, they could do that on a single disc using seamless branching. There just aren't enough changes between the theatrical release of the PT and the DVD release, imo, to warrant a completely separate disc. I'm sure there's enough material for 1 more disc as well.

I don't believe this is going to be a Star Wars box set either, but it could be done with that number of discs.

Well, its worth noting that this is Australia too--because earlier this year there was a 12-disk boxset of Star Wars available to order for R4/australia (IIRC--I also believe it was legit and not a bootleg). It was all six films in two disk editions (special features disk for PT, GOUT disk for the OT), without the 2004 OT bonus disk. So maybe this australian DVD conference is just in reference to this thing.

Now Ridley Scott is a man who knows how to keep the fans happy. Imagine Lucas giving us a five disc boxed set of Star Wars.

I see what you are saying, but retail always fairs better when it goes after the Christmas season/shoppers. If SW was released on its Anniv. date, you are really only catering to the fans. But if you release it to the Christmas shoppers, you have a great opportunity not only for the fans but for the somebody's to pick it up who normally wouldn't because they are buying it for somebody else.

And yes, I fee that SW is totally saturated at this point but that is a whole other issue LOL

I still think that this will be a typical Lucas fast one where they say they won't but still do, and we WILL see the OOT again sometime very soon.

"Okay... we've checked with 20th Century Fox on that EzyDVD Star Wars: The Ultimate Collection we mentioned yesterday. Turns out it's exactly what we thought it was. This is NOT the super-ultimate box set we've all been hoping for, just a retailer assembled bundle of all of the previously released DVDs sets. The retailer's page has since been updated with pictures of the discs to clarify this. So that settles that."

the bits on young indy

"Finally today, there's interesting Indy and Star Wars news: At the Star Wars Celebration event in Europe this past weekend, George Lucas' longtime producer, Rick McCallum, spilled the beans on some interesting release plans at Lucasfilm. It seems that the first of several volumes of Young Indiana Jones episodes will finally be released on DVD on 10/13. According to this link at the official Star Wars blog, the first batch of discs will street in October, followed by another in January and one more right after the theatrical release of Indy IV."

I hope to god that you're right, but I've long since learned not to trust to hope, for it is forsaken in these lands.. As I say, even assuming that there WILL be a DVD set, if there's no restored OOT, then, pardon my language, but I really don't give a fuck.

16 discs? That makes no sense. Let's pretend for a moment that hell has frozen over and the OOT is in the set. The PT+the SEs=6+the special feature discs for the PT that already came out=9. Even if there is a god and the OOT was included too, that's still only equal 12. If I were dreaming, I would say that there were extras for each movie (PT and SE) then that would=12 discs, plus the OOT=15+random disc of other extras=16. But really, I've long since given up even dreaming about something like that happening. Again, as I say, Lucas knows that there's a dedicated group of fans who want a restored OOT, and it would be ideal to release it in a massive boxed set because he would know that people like me would pay pretty much anything for them, but I doubt that they'd do that. It makes too much sense.

But this really proves nothing, and all this says is that this is going to be the product for this specific retailer...something from LFL is still possible.

That was a while ago, and it was just a repakaging of the DVDs. LFL are rumored to have a big announcement at Comic-Con, which this could dovetail with, but I imagine it's just the TV series.

The was a rumor just a few weeks ago about a Star Wars box which turned out to be the repakaging. Now there's a NEW rumor about an LFL announcement.
