I think it's just Lucas' very poor attempt at humor with Ford. Ford's never made any secret of the fact that he's not happy about the changes or the prequels. Lucas just seems like the kind of guy who's been living in his insulated Lucasworld for so long that he doesn't understand that the whole issue of castrating the character of Han Solo wasn't funny to people. In fact, it's cost him even some of his most loyal fans.

With that one change, Lucas finally went too far. However, he still doesn't realize it. Instead of admitting his mistake, he chose instead to lie about it (saying it was his original idea in 1977) and then went so far as to make up cartoon t-shirts about it. Then he somehow thinks it would actually be funny to wear one around the actor whose character he ruined. He's that out of touch.
