I just remembered one tiny thing I was disappointed about, the sound of the A-10 gattling gun.
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

Hm. I wasn't a huge fan of G1 Transformers. I grew up mostly on Beast Wars (which is a good show in many ways despite the horrible CGI, and is a part of the G1 continuity)...

That said, I knew the basic plot going in and was expecting a fairly mediocre movie. However, I really found myself enjoying it quite a lot. The humor was just right, the action was spectacular, and it managed to make the idea of Transformers believable in a real-worldish setting. Optimus Prime is so hardcore.

A few criticisms, with SPOILERS:

-Why on Earth did they make the evacuation point of the All Spark a CITY full of, you know, PEOPLE. It felt like Bay just threw out logic and reason so he'd have a city for a set piece of the battle and bystanders to put in danger.

-Morse Code. Why does every movie use this cliche when communications are down? What are the odds that the people on the recieving end actually KNOW morse code? It would be clunky and inconvenient and you'd have to repeat the whole dot-and-dash sequence over and over again for them to get the whole thing.

I just wish they weren't so manga-looking. And I'm not anti-manga by any means. Also, why is it they tried so hard to secure Peter Cullen (original voice of Optimus Prime) but rejected Frank Welker (original voice of Megatron) in favor of Hugo Weaving? Weaving is cool but c'mon, Welker's the one and only Megatron!

I read somewhere that they really wanted to use Welker, but his voice had aged and was no longer suitable for the voice acting in the movie where people would hear it under the crystal clear systems they now have in modern theaters. He does, however, voice Megatron in the video game version of Transformers which accompanies this movie.

And they weren't afraid that Cullen's voice had "aged" and was "no longer suitable" for voicing the character?

Well, they auditioned both just to make sure. Apparently, Michael Bay was extremely surprised that Cullen's voice hadn't aged at all.

Went and watched it again yesterday. And I have to admit that this time around it was EVEN BETTER!! This movie just plain rocks. It was better in the regards that it was easier to follow the battle sequences at the end. I will certainly buy this movie when it comes out, I may even make it my first next gen media purchase (i.e. blu-ray or HD-DVD).

Eh, I thought Weaving did a pretty good job.

I saw it today. Better than I thought, but too many humans and not enough of the Transformers themselves, and the only human worth paying attention to was -

Nuff said.

Seriously though, Megatron needed more screen time, just like the other Decepticons and Autobots. The CGI was top notch and the action set pieces were great, if a little too Matrix like for my tastes and the robot designs too manga-ish for my tastes.

What kills me though is that this film was budgeted at $150 million, unlike last year's July release Superman Returns with its plus $200 million budget, and Transformers has already made back more domestically in like two-three weeks than SR did in its entire domestic run.

Here's hoping that when they try yet another He-Man or do GI Joe, they'll do 'em right.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Wait. So you want to blame the latest CGI fest on George Lucas because the FX company he created worked on the movie? Even though Lucas had nothing to do with it outside of creating that company 30+ years ago? There are plenty of reasons not to like Transformers. I think you've picked the lamest one ever though.

I read the reviews and went and saw it anyway. It was a lot of fun. I'm glad I didn't listen (too much) to the critics.
