There are two shots of the Jedi and Palpatine discussing Dooku. Go directly from: "This time we take him together. I was about to say that." to "He's a Sith Lord. Sith Lords are our speciality " (not the exact dialog). Just lay in some footsteps behind their dialog (to imply Dooku has walked down the stairs). When we next see Dooku ("your swords please"), it actually looks like he is walking away from the stairs, not the spot he jumped to.

It's my personal theory that Christopher Lee actually did walk down the stairs, and this was shot. However, Lucas didn't like something about it (maybe there was Dooku dialog he didn't like). So instead of reshooting the scene, he just had ILM use the gaudy CGI jump.

here's the Dooku Vs Jedis fight clip, dooku still doing his salto, (erikstormtrooper, i think that's a way to do it, i'm trying to keep his entrance and lightning on the saber)

just to show you, the result as it is now, a lot of "reedition" shots, cuts, trimming dialogue, sound effects..etc..to make this faster...when you do a work like that, you find things that we missed, ther's a lot of mistakes, redendency(!!), goofs etc...so my edit is not to change any plot of the story, but i'm trying to enhance some shots to serve the story..
let me know what you thinkin of.

Hey Hal,
I have your first edit of Sith, what other changes did you make for your second version?

In my edit, I just cut out the salto, showing Dooku falling and landing but not the actual jump. I think that works pretty well, but obviously, if you have the skills to fix it in Photoshop without making it look ridiculous (*cough* Hayden's head on Shaw's body *cough*), that's even better.
I like Erikstormtrooper's idea of laying in footstep sounds for Dooku. I may need to do that later, but I am excited to show you guys the rough cut I will have done of the scene (well, the first part anyway) this weekend.
darkhelmet, I finally got to watch the rest of your clips, and I really like what I'm seeing. I especially like how Anakin interrupts Palpatine in the "Chancellor as Sith" scene, and how Padme says nothing when Obi tells her of Anakin's dark deeds. Good job!

Cool! Thanks! I'm glad to hear the positive feedback on Anakin interrupting Palpatine. When I first did that edit, I wasn't sure it worked, but I think it does now.

Awesome! On both counts.

My video card is... not working. So I can't upload a clip.

I made a cut after the Anakin's line "I was about to say that". JUST as Obi-Wan looks back at Palpatine (it's subtle).
CUT to the shot where Obi-Wan turns around and we hear Dooku say "your swords please...".

If you look at the DVD you can probably visualize it.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Sorry to hear that, Hal. I hope you can get the thing back up soon (and at minimal cost).

Man! I think we might have made the same cut! I managed to get the scene cut earlier than I had posted. Here's my clip of the Obi-wan/Anakin/Dooku duel. Is it the same as yours?

Ooo! A shiny DVD! Can't wait. Thanks, Hal!

BTW, what file-sharing services does everybody find best for sharing this kind of stuff? I've used YouSendIt.com, Rapidshare, and, now, MegaUpload. Is any one better than the others?

Hey guys, been watching this thread closely, good to see all the progress. I want to throw out a thought. Everytime, Anakin does something wrong, he questions it verbally. "I Shouldn't have done that... it's not the Jedi Way" Well then, don't do it in the first place if you know it was wrong. Not only is it annoying, I think it diminishes his character. Anakin is Headstrong, and that is what takes him down the road to the Dark Side, that's just a part of his Character.

Sideous tells him to finish Dooku, Anakin does, and that's that. He doesn't think it was wrong. He only realizes he's started down the dark path after he takes off Mace's Arm, after it's too late.

An example of this, someone tells a lie, the first time, you feel bad, after a while you lie without even knowing it, the lies are now a part of your character, they get bigger and bigger, and then finally, you tell one big whopper of a lie, and it gets you into trouble. (cutting off Maces Arm resulting in his death).

So all of that to say, in the beginning it makes sense for him to feel guilty like after killing the Tusken Raiders in AOTC, he's young and impulsive, but if the dark side has begun to consume him, as it has, he shouldn't question it anymore, especially after going through all the killing in the clone wars. He should think nothing of it until that big whopper. He kills Dooku like Sidious told him too, thinks nothing of it, and goes over to help Obi-wan. In his mind, both are the right things to do. Kind of Twisted thinking. "He's more machine now, than man, Twisted and Evil" Thoughts?

i think that he should execute dooku without Palpatine asking, and he realise that he has doin something wrong that's a direct connection for what he has done with the tusken in AOTC, he accomplish REVENGE after anger !!! he is fallen to the dark side.

Here's the clip : Anakin path to the dark side

Yes, YouSendIt has given downloaders trouble, but everything of mine since "seeds of rebellion" has been posted to RapidShare or MegaUpload. Going forward, I'll just upload to either of those since they don't seem to be as troublesome to use.

And, Master Qui-Gon, maybe next time you could ask for someone to try to resolve an issue instead of just jumping into the thread with an ungracious complaint.

I totally agree with you. In a perfect world my rough edit of the Dooku scene would go EXACTLY like you have described (well, almost exactly; I can't stand the fact that the Chancellor is so transparently a bad influence on Anakin while Anakin seems completely oblivious ).

The trick is pulling the scene off cinematically, matching shot cuts to make the whole thing flow without seeing Anakin's mouth move with nothing coming out of it. Ideally, I'd like the editing to be seemless like the Phantom mostly does in ATTACK OF THE PHANTOM. Any suggestions?

DarkHelmet,

First off, I really like the way you cut this scene. To get rid of the "I shouldn't have done that" line and palpatine statements, while still allowing it to flow, possibly cut it like this:

Leave it as is (in your cut) -
- Anakin walks over to release Palpatine from the chair, we see the arm braces disengage -
- [cut anakin saying "I Shouldn't have done that it's not the jedi way"] -
- show Palpatine standing up only for as long as it takes for him to say, "Now We must leave" [this line taken from a few cuts later where they walk away, the full line was "Now We must leave before more battle droids..."] This should work as his head is down as he speaks -
- KEEP the scene with Palpatine looking at Anakin where there is currently no dialogue in your cut. Add the quote "You did well Anakin" [this is just after Anakin cuts off Dooku's head, you had cut this scene] This would result in the stare from Anakin, as he is questioning what he has done internally.

Let me know if you think this is do-able. The only thing that may not work is the "Now We must leave" but it should sync with "it is only natural" since his head is down for most of the line.

MQ: Cool. cbaka re-uploaded "Anakin path to the dark side", this time to RapidShare, so you should be able to get that one, too. I'd be glad to get your feedback on any of my stuff. I'm sure the same goes with the other fan editors in the thread here.

jedi_jra: I'm going to try exactly what you have suggested. That was awesome! Thanks. I really like your resequencing of Palpatine's lines. It seems like it could really punch up the drama and make the Chancellor a little less of a simplistic, one-dimensional bad guy by keeping the reason for his praise unsaid. Exciting. There may be hope yet!

cbaka: I just watched "Anakin path to the dark side", and holy crap! I love the way your execution of Dooku plays with no dialogue! I'm going to see if I can incorporate this and jedi_jra's suggestions into my next cut of the scene. If that all works together, then I think I might be able to move on to figuring out the entire opening to the movie, which has been really troubling for me for a while now!

I did an edit of the the Death of Dooku and it happens really fast now. Dooku doesn't even have a chance to realize what is about to happen.
I also cut out Anikan's line "I shouln't have done that. It is not the Jedi way." Watch it please, and tell me what you guys think: Anikan's Dark Side

P.S. The Dark Side music is similar to the music used during Anikan's Confession scene from AOTC, but is closer to the OT Darth Vader theme and is louder signifying that Anikan is slipping closer to the Dark Side. Also, since the Tusken Slaughter is mentioned it is apropriate to use this music because it was attatched to the confession scene in AOTC.

I love all the edits for EP III being worked on, this is great!

Marvolo,

I really like the transitioning from the arm restraints, to Palpatine Standing. It was seemless and eliminated one of my least favorite lines in the whole movie. Thank you for that! The one thing that I did miss was the look of terror on Dooku's face when Anakin has him on his knees, head between the blades. This is where he realizes, he's met his match, and this wasn't the same boy who he had beat in AOTC. Oh yeah, that and the fact that his life was over.

Only other question, I know many people are attempting to keep the vader thing a secret, do you plan on doing this as well? Vader's music may be a bit too revealing if you are trying to keep it a secret. Also it may be a bit too early in the movie for this, as he has not yet turned to the dark side. Might be more appropriate after he chops off Mace's arm (if it's not already there, I can't remember).

Keep the clips coming! I love all the different "Point of Views".

I hadn't really planned to do a whole edit. I just like to do bits and pieces of the movies to help people get ideas to use in their own edits. I may stick all these little edits together and make a full edit of ROTS, but right now I am mostly taking it slow and doing what you might call pre-production work.

About the Vader theme music, I had planned to not use it, but in The Story of Star Wars PDF book released by a member of this forum it has some quotes from George Lucas about ROTS. George states that at one point when he was planning Anikan's fall to the Dark Side he wanted the Anikan/Dooku duel to mirror the ROTJ Vader/Luke/Emperor duel in that Luke chooses the Light Side and the story ends, but in ROTS Anikan chooses to give in to his hatred and kills Dooku and by doing so rather than the film ending the film continues to chart Anikan's decent to the Dark Side.

This made me want to try to make Anikan's fall more like George's original idea by having the killing of Dooku be what starts his spiral towards the Dark Side rather than his dreams of Padme and his attempts to save her. Plus, I think something like Vader's theme should have been used to chart Anikan's decent to the Dark Side musically in the Prequels. In each film Anikan's theme would slowly get darker and closer to the militaristic Vader theme in ESB. It could have been a hopeful theme at first, but after his slaughter of the Tuskens you would start to hear confusing and unbalanced chaotic and harsh notes symbolizing Anikan's own confusion. But since no music was written like this for the prequels I used what I had.

I'm sorry but I didn't like eaither of the count dooku edits.

For one, I believe that showing anakin killing him so willingly... but then try to argue that he shouldn't have done that is... strange... the lack of emotion in him as he argues it is also very obvious...

It's like "why are you even bothering to say it..."

I personalyl prefer him being told to...

Also, for some reason, the 2nd one is sped up (the longer version). It... the music is distractingly out of tune... did you speed up the video?

the last one is good but has the same removing of the argument... it has more which is good but there is no hesitation...

I never realized how much time is wasted and dead air there is as they walk to the chancellor... wow... lol you should try adding the last held note of the music from "The Elevator Scene" to it since thats where it was intended to go... it would help shorten that silence. heh

Is it not sad that in this time, we are more surprised by acts of love than acts of hate?

Marvolo, can you repost your Dooku duel? I'd love to check it out. MegaUpload says the file's "temporarily unavailable."
