Alright, I'm ready to contribute some $$ if needed Ady. What's the situation and what are people generally kicking in?

Well if you look closely, is not an extra Laser, they are just arranged differently, in EP4 there are 8 lasers forming a circle and in EP6 there are 7 lasers forming a circle plus one in the middle.

Question:

In A New Hope how does the death star travel so fast to chase the heros to Yavin without a hyperdrive, or does it have a hyperdrive?

We don't actually know how much time has passed since they escaped. It could have been weeks. They had to analyze the plans, draw up their strategy and get everything ready for the face off so its safe to say that some time passed.

The death star does have hyperdrive, it's been a while since I read it but it's in the death star technical manual that was created for the role playing game.

In fact some of the role playing star wars books contain lots more information than some of these so called star wars encyclopedias.

It's also on wookieepedia a great source of star wars info, I've copied some of the text below.

"The battlestation also included two massive sublight engines in the midsection, as well as a formidable hyperdrive system. Driven by 123 individual generators, the Class 3 hyperdrive was fast enough to allow the Death Star to travel thousands of light years from Alderaan to Yavin IV in only a few hours."

Hope this answers your question

I have to say, I liked the look of the ROTJ laser better, because of the center one. I seem to recall that before the Special Editions, the Death Star in ANH also had a center blast, and didn't have the "beady" converging lasers that I think make it look weaker. I haven't checked, though, so I could be wrong (I may just be remembering ROTJ).

Either way, though, adywan, would you mind sharing what you changed about the Death Star laser in that shot? I know you said that you repainted all the lasers in the film, so I'm assuming you touched up the shot in some way, even if you maintained the "beady" look.

Take care,

Really? I would have thought it was more like 24hrs or something. The first thing Leia says to the commander when they arrive on Yavin is that "we have no time for our sorrows commander - bla blah" which gave me the impression that the Death star was right on their ass. Also, why would Han stick around for a few weeks? Surely he'd be off before th DS arrived. And I think Leia might have changed her outfit after a few weeks, especially being in that cell, and trash compactor.
And another thing.
But really, who cares

I was just wondering because what's the point of having a central laser canon thing if they aren't going to use it. Plus they're destroying a freaking planet, the more fire power the better. Right? aw well, it's your call Ady.

It might have made more sense in ROTJ to have only some of the of the lasers fire up. It does look quite powerful [as is] but they never fired on anything as big as a planet like the first death star.

Just wanted to cast my vote on the DS1 center laser topic. I say don't add it. Do we really want the DS1 and DS2 to look the same? The center laser on DS2 DOES give the impression that it's is more powerful than DS1, even if the number of lasers is the same. The center laser makes the two different and that's what I like. Please don't add it, just my opinion.

I won't be adding the center laser on the Death Star in ANH. I agree that it does make the 2nd DS look more powerful so it will remain as it is .

The edit has almost ground to a hault . I'm very close to my target for funds for the drives so i'm just going to have continue plea my plea for donations. And many thanks to those who have donated so far.

Just as a overly technical scientific point. There was a show on Discovery about star wars (The Science of Star Wars or something) that showed how several lasers angled to meet at a central focus could never redirect together as a single laser. I know its real world science applied to a fictional movie, it doesn't bother me (its the DEATH STAR for God sakes) just thought Id point it out though.

Sounds fine to me. Are you keeping the "beady" look, might I ask?

vbangle, as you can attest, Adywan has proven his worth to the Star Wars fan community for the last year and a half. His work stands out in an amazing way. He had rekindled hope and interest in Star Wars for me after almost a decade of personal despondence. Everyone who has seen his efforts should not for a moment assume he's not the real deal. I admit, I used to see donations going around for fan edits and I never did. I wasn't skeptical of their work or honesty - I just wasn't fired up or excited. Now, I am excited.

I hope more people come forward who have enjoyed and been inspired by Adywan's work and help him complete his vision. It already is incredible, even in just the pieces we have seen. Let's help him through this rough patch and have the opportunity to see the entire project completed. I know it will blow me away. In fact, I often wonder how I'll be able to contain myself given my reaction to just a two or three minute tie fighter attack scene or snippets of new fixes. The whole thing at once might put me in a blissful coma.

As far as I'm concerned, the video clips Adywan has shared with us thus far alone are enough to warrant a donation (especially the TIE fighter attack sequence).

Oh my sweet Jesus...

I've been a lurker here for a while, and just got a look at Adywan's side -by-side comparison video of the work he's doing on this project.

Whatever it takes, sir, you MUST complete this project. The work is absolutely wonderful, and the little tweaks(Yavin added, the increased amount of fighters, the green laser cannon glow)brought a smile of glee to the face of this old 1977 Wars-dog. Just the shots of Luke's X-wing lifting off and flying towards camera, and the reverse-perspective shot of the laser turret firing at the passing X-wing fighter did something for me that Lucas and Co. have failed to do for years: it made me excited about Star Wars again.

I'll be donating whatever I can to Adywan to help with his work, in the hopes that one day all of us can share in what looks to be an incredible effort.

Bravo.
