Would anyone want a Dune remake?

Would anyone be interested in a competant director trying to adapt this book again? Maybe someone like Peter Jackson who would stay as faithful to the source material as possible. I think Dune is an interesting story its current film adaption is just flawed, and deserves a retry.

Now that we live in a time when studios have a goal to turn everything into a trilogy or franchise, Dune could definitely get the budget/cast/director/treatment it deserves.

I say give it to Joss Whedon. Despite Serenity's commercial failure, it was a damn good science fiction movie, and I think Whedon has a grasp on the weirdness required to make Dune both faithful to the novel and a nice homage to Lynch's version.

Either him or Stephen Soderbergh. I thought he did a great job with Solaris.

I thought the SCI-FI channel's TV miniseries of DUNE was more or less the remake.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

Yea, but The Four Feathers has so far had five big screen adaptations and one for the small screen. Anything is possible.

I had not even thought of Joss Whedon, but I agree. My interest of Dune stemed from my interest in Firefly. I do not know why, but there is something about Dune that I like, and when I watch Firefly I think of how good Dune could have been if it was done like Firefly. Whedon did not rush character development so he could have more action he let the story develope naturally, and Dune is a story that can not be rushed in its presentation. I wonder if Whedon is a fan of Dune?

It's funny to read that, Marvolo, because for me it was vice versa. Part of the reason I liked firefly is how much it reminded me of Dune. The combining of languages (Chinese and English in Firefly, Russian and English in Dune) is probably the biggest example.

A new adaptation of the novel would not be a remake anymore than adapting any other existing book.

While Herbert's screenplay wasn't used, he actually had quite a bit of involvement in the movie and actually did rewrites with David Lynch on the script. One such rewrite shortened the script by 15 pages and saved the budget 15 million dollars (you do the math). He could've gotten a screenplay credit but declined out of respect for Lynch.

Herbert's level of involvement kind of helps to ignore things like the weirding modules, but as a friend of a friend of mine replied, "Frank Herbert was also drugged out of his mind in the last years of his life. What's your point?"

THEY EVEN DID CHILDREN OF DUNE. THEY WERE BOTH DONE AS A MINISERIES. THEY STAYED FAITHFUL TO THE BOOKS. WHY REMAKE THEM AGAIN ???

Dune needs an update. Its visual effects are very dated, and it could be adapted better.

I had sparkling water coming out of my nose when I read this. Painful. Anyone who thinks PJ was faithful to LOTR needs to read the books again. I also worry that PJ would take his director's cut hubris to the hilt with something like this and produce a film even more bloated and overlong than King Kong was.

I like the idea of getting Joss Whedon invloved, and I also liked the miniseries approach. I'd like to see an adaptation of Dune financed by HBO, Showtime of Cinemax with a similar approach to that taken by Rome.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Peter Jackson deviated alot from the novel yes, but you try adapting a 1,000 page novel. Some things that work on paper do not work on film.

I am not arguing that the Lord of the Rings was perfect. The Two Towers is a horribly paced film, changing Frodo's age was pointless, making Merry and Pippin comic relief was pointless, Denethor should have seemed troubled instead of psychotic, Borimir was over the top, Aragon should not have acted like he did not want to be king in the films, Faramir's character should have been left the way he was in the book, Shelob should have been in The Two Towers (I know why they changed it, but it ROTK had to much stuff going on already without Shelob. It took away from the Siege of Gondor). There are lots of things I dislike about the films, but for a film that was said to be unfilmable Peter Jackson did a good job.

Only if it was directed by Lynch and even more insane then the first film.

It would also have to have another epic rock score or I am not interested.

This implies Lynch isn't/wasn't a competent director who had complete control over how his adaptation was made. The problem with this, however, is

A. Lynch isn't incompetent, just unconventional (Well, Inland Empire was a piece of ugly shit, but I'm remaining hopeful that that was just an unlucky fluke and he'll do a better job on his next big project.).

B. He didn't have full creative control over the movie he made. The movie that was released was far shorter than he wanted it to be, resulting in lots of unwelcome and unnecessary truncation.

True. But I wish Lynch would settle down and release his own Director's Cut one of these days. Before the audio in all the missing footage rots away!

Yeah that would be nice but given how badly things went for him on that film i get the impression he would just like to pretend that it never happened.
