Most of the time you can't record from a turntable directly onto the PC, because the output needs to be amplified/equalised from "phono" to the "line-level" input to your sound card. Older hi-fi amps, and DJ mixers, will have a phono input and can output a linear signal.

And I believe newer turntables include built-in amplifiers to produce line-level outputs.
