Ripping DVDs on a Mac

Author
Time
I just recently got a MacBook Pro with money I received for graduation. The main reason I bought it was for video editing (which is what I'm going to college for). Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a decent way to rip a DVD on a Mac. What I'd like is a DVD-Shrink-like program to rip the VIDEO_TS folder onto the hard drive, and then something to convert the VIDEO_TS files to HuffYUV AVI files for editing in Final Cut. I don't yet have Final Cut Studio 2, which I'll be getting shortly, so if that has something of the sort with it, I'll just wait for that.

I'd also like to find a Nero-equivalent for burning .FLAC audio files and VIDEO_TS folders to DVDs, if anyone knows of anything. I figured it'd be faster and I'd get more reliable suggestions here than if I tried to search Google for hours and hours, weeding through a bunch of shit that doesn't work or works poorly.

Thanks.

MacTheRipper. Version 3.0 is in beta if you can find a copy in the wild.

HuffYUV is not Mac compatible. The best lossless video codec for Mac is SheerVideo. It's not free, but if you're able to pony up cash for Final Cut Studio, it's not that much.

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert VOB or any MPEG2 file to your codec of choice for editing in FCP.

Toast Titanium 8 is THE burning app on the Mac. It handles flac's perfectly and is what I use to burn all my discs. Version 8 is what you want.

Fantastic - thanks for the information!

A few other things, though:

What's new in MacTheRipper 3 that's not in 2.66 that would merit me looking for it instead of just getting 2.66?

Also, is there a BitLord-esque BitTorrent app for Mac? I've tried several that haven't worked, such as Azureus - it won't work due to ports being closed or something, an issue I had on Windows as well, and I still can't figure out how to fix it, but BitLord always worked fine without me having to fiddle with any such thing. My only other request for a torrent client is the ability to selectively download, but I can live without that if I find a client that just works.

Thanks again, and I'll look further myself.

I use Transmission for torrents. Lean and mean. Works great! I used to use Azureus, but it's bloated beyond reason now.

Just do a search for "torrent" on versiontracker and browse through the bit-torrent clients for OS X. There are more than a few from which to choose. Transmission seems to be the favorite at this point.

I believe that the MTR v3 beta is Intel native. Version 2.66 should still work just fine for you on your MBP, though.

EDIT: You'll probably need to configure OS X's built-in firewall to allow which ever port(s) your particular torrent client uses. I had to open up port 9090 for Transmission...

I just tried out Bits On Wheels and it works fine for me.

The only problem is I got quite spoiled on Windows and was used to being able to select the files I wanted to download, which would make getting the mono Rubber Soul a lot easier as the only place I can find it right now is buried in a huge torrent of all Dr. Ebbetts' Beatles releases (at least it claims to be such - it really isn't). I'd rather not download 8 gb of crap for the 300-500 mb I'll need.

I now have Toast 8.0.1, MacTheRipper 2.66, and MPEG Streamclip now as well. Thanks for your suggestions - it all works great. I'll have to get SheerVideo later at some point (at least the Intel version is cheaper than the UB version) - I'm getting FCS some time this week, much much cheaper than retail at my college's Apple store ($395 I believe).

Okay - I tried to rip Episode III to edit it, and my MacBook Pro didn't even recognize the disc as being there. That's the first thing I've tried to rip, and I haven't tried to rip anything else. Suggestions?

Got it to work - it was something quite stupid, but it's working fine now.

Any suggestions on setting up MPEG StreamClip with a m2v file as input and a DV-AVI as output? I tried and it didn't seem to work (said the AVI was corrupt or something like that).

Don't choose AVI. If you're wanting to use the DV codec, choose "Export to DV". DV is horribly destructive to color/chroma. When you get SheerVideo installed, you'll "Export to Quicktime" and then choose that codec. Then, set up your FCP timeline with that codec/framerate/etc...

You're going to find that not everything in an AVI wrapper works well on the Mac. If you're editing on the Mac, it's better to stay within the Quicktime wrapper.

Thanks very much - I love Mac, but it does take some getting used to. Thanks for all the help.

It ain't from Dr.E, but I encourage you to give it a spin. I prefer it over the doc's.
Search for "The Beatles in MONO"

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Demonoid?

--edit--

Found it - thanks much! I'll have to have a listen to REVOLVER as well - it's my favorite Beatles album, and I already have Mono Matrix 1 and Mono Matrix 2/3 from Dr. Ebbetts, so I'm curious as to the sound quality of this version. I've always been very happy with Ebbetts' releases. If only now I could find his copy of The Who's mono A QUICK ONE ...

Thank you so much! You are awesome!

I feel bad though because my internet connection or possibly my torrent client seems to be wonky all the time - I can never seed properly, if at all. I guess I can connect to people to download and I can upload to them while I'm downloading, but once I start seeding, everyone drops off. Anyone know a workaround for this with Bits On Wheels?

--edit--

It seems I'm seeding at a few kilobytes per second at the very least - I'll leave it open, and hopefully my connection will speed up and I'll get connected to more people.
