Any petition now would be smaller than the original outcry for the originals, which would look real bad. An increasingly big chunk of fans actively DON'T want or care about anything but the current versions and the "complete saga", which they'll get forever anyway. Which means the same 6 movies as shown on HBO all the time, but with a few new changes every 4 years for the rest of time. And if you're REAL good, some deleted scenes you can see for free already on youtube, and a new documentary on the genius of it all. All coming in 2009!

I think it's more that an increasing number of fans don't care to collect yet another copy of Star Wars on DVD. As far as they're concerned, they have the movies. They've got the SEs and may have gotten a fan preservation from someone here. They see no need to buy another copy from LFL.
The only thing that could make fans want to buy it again would be to put out an HD boxed set with all the deleted scenes from all the movies. Since that isn't likely to happen before the next format war, nobody cares.
