So, um... no new DVD's announced this year? — Page 4

It is truly a bizaare policy to say "we will always makes sure that Star Wars is NOT available in the best quality until long after everyone else". How is that even a good business decision? (I believe The Matrix dvd did just fine vs. the Phantom Menace dvd 2 frickin years later)

I'm old enough to remember when RCA gave you Star Wars for free for buying a CED Videodisc player and Projecton tv combo. Someone at Lucasfilm has forgotten how the OT made a lot of people run out and buy a VCR or Laserdisc player just to watch them at home. Someone was certainly off their rocker when Phantom Menace was released on Laserdisc only in Japan, and the fan club was forced to withdraw their offer to sell them directly to fans.

most fans sit in the middle when it comes to the PT, they kinda like them,

No way. The first two are really bad films and the third one i mediocre. I don't like any of them.
Darth Lucas: I am altering the trilogy. Pray I don't alter it further.

Its actually more like TPM starts bad and then spirals downward through AOTC and becomes worse than "Manos:the Hands of Fate" with ROTS.

"When the OOT was released last year, it was probably the only non-anamorphic DVD release of the 21st century."

ROTFL...and will likely continue to hold that title.

" I was at SW's official site and they had a video advertisement for LG's new player that can play both formats. Yes, LFL will probably allow pretty much anyone to advertise there for the right amount of $. But I still can't shake the feeling that something is up their sleeves..."

Seriously, I would read absolutely nothing into that. Universal players are the only way to go, although Lucas could put a serious dent into either format by choosing one over the other (and yet could make double the profit releasing to both.)

With what exactly? The 'OOT' definitely wont see the light of day in HD quality.

They screwed the pooch.

It's as simple as that. Lucasfilm fucked up by not releasing anything for the 30th Anniversary. They screwed up. That's all there is to it.

That's It guys. We must ban together, and show this monsterous tirrany called Lucasfilm LTD who's boss.
Someone should start a petition, gather as many signitures as we can and give It to Lucas. They'll come around. I'm sure of it. So... Who's with me?

We can win

Would someone please tell me why people just shy away whenever the issue of another petition is brought up?

I'd sign one, but I really don't think it matters much. The original OT petition didn't impact George very much--it was much more succesful, I think, in bringing together fans--and it's become increasingly clear since then that Lucas doesn't really care what the long-time fans think or want. A petition only works if someone is interested in what the petitioners have to say. In this case, there's no chance we could get enough people to sign a petition that there's an economic argument to be made for taking the petition seriously. And I hate to say it, but I think that's the only way a fan petition will get in the door.

To paraphrase the Borg: "Petitions are futile."

Any petition now would be smaller than the original outcry for the originals, which would look real bad. An increasingly big chunk of fans actively DON'T want or care about anything but the current versions and the "complete saga", which they'll get forever anyway. Which means the same 6 movies as shown on HBO all the time, but with a few new changes every 4 years for the rest of time. And if you're REAL good, some deleted scenes you can see for free already on youtube, and a new documentary on the genius of it all. All coming in 2009!

I just want everyone to know that I sent well written letter to LF, complete with my email and everything, spilling my guts out for the DVD box set bout a week ago. And yet still no response. They were my heroes and they just stepped on me like a bug. My dreams have been shattered.

So I came up with a plan.

-first, someone has to pretend they're diing
-next contact the "Make A Wish Foundation" or something and ask for the newly enhance Saga Box Set.

It's a foolproof plan.

At this point I can't really blame you for feeling that way, DGC. When LFL pretty blatantly states that they're not going to even remaster the originals because they're in bad condition even though they did restore the negatives for the SE, how do you not take that as one huge fuck you? The Star Wars fan I am now wonders why the Star Wars fan I used to be didn't boycott everything from Lucas in the past 10 years. If I'd known what was coming, I probably would have.

Why are you getting upset because you didn't get something you were never promised? - Idle gossip from people like Rick McCallum doesn't count. And your idea to exploit foundations like 'make a wish' is horrible. [even if you're joking]

Hey, if I had a terminal illness I think seeing the O-OT in HD would be pretty high on my list of things to do before I die.

Thank you Fang. I was only joking. I just watched the Family Guy episode, and just thought I'd put that idea in their. Didn't mean to offend.

I think it's more that an increasing number of fans don't care to collect yet another copy of Star Wars on DVD. As far as they're concerned, they have the movies. They've got the SEs and may have gotten a fan preservation from someone here. They see no need to buy another copy from LFL.

The only thing that could make fans want to buy it again would be to put out an HD boxed set with all the deleted scenes from all the movies. Since that isn't likely to happen before the next format war, nobody cares.

Yes, but even with a release of the SEs he could pretty much end the format war.

The format war has been effectively ended for a while now. But I don't think the SE, or anything Star Wars, would end it in and of itself, though it would definitly give the format a huge slant. In that case it would have been Blu-Ray, which has won the war anyway. The reason I say that it wouldn't really be as effective as, for example, on DVD, is because not a lot of people are even considering upgrading, let alone deciding which format to go with--most people are incapable of upgrading because the vast, vast, vast majority of people don't have HD displays yet (as opposed to DVD, where all you had to do in the 1990's was buy a player and you were set).

When I step back and look at it all, I guess it's not that big of a deal once you just remember that the OOT is well preserved on film in various places even if it's not mastered in HD for our viewing in anamorphic dvd or high def blu-ray. There are already some blu-ray and hd-dvd releases of movies such as Chronicles of Riddick and Superman: The Movie that are not their original versions, even though both were released on dvd in their original versions. I wonder if the upcoming Blade Runner dvd will do something like that, include all the versions on the dvd but only include the latest version on the BD and HDDVD. Let's not forget THX-1138. Where's the petition for that OV? Also, Indiana Jones apparently isn't in its original form on dvd either, though not being an Indy historian I couldn't spot a single change if I tried. That's the problem with Star Wars, it's impossible not to notice the changes.

More to the point, technically none of the star wars films are on dvd in their original forms. I kinda like to look at the dvds as the '97-'05 version of the saga. The GOUT is a totally different matter, and I still wish GL hadn't bothered if he was just going to fuck over the fans like that. The sting goes away when you remember that it was also the first individual releases of the OT movies, and maybe it's just a first step on a very long road and not the first and last step on that road. GL won't ignore us as fans if we yell loud enough.

February of '09 is the official switchover date to digital television in the United States. In order to watch tv in the U.S. after that point people will need a box to convert the digital signal into analog (I would assume if they already have cable this would be done for them) or they'll have to get a digital tv set. Either way, analog tv broadcasts will be a thing of the past.

here's my source on that in case you're having trouble believing me.

Doesn't get more official than that.

The GOUT won't be any more obsolete than it already is, which is very, very obsolete.

Your funny, but I wasn't serious about that. I just want to start a petition to see how many people care, and then I'll send it to LucasFilm. I know it may not work, but you'll never know until someone tries.
