Info Wanted: Fullscreen versions of James Cameron's movies?

Hi, are there any projects preserving James Cameron’s movies in the original for in which they were planned to see ?

In the case you don’t know, James Cameron shoots all his movies in fullscreen, but crops them to widescreen for their theatrical release.

I’m currently doing a 4:3 version of the Abyss, and yes, you can finally see her breasts again (Those of you who saw the movie know what I’m talking about)
I want to ask if somebody did preserve the fullscreen versions of T1&T2 and of course Aliens. Hm, maybe even True Lies and Titanic

Thanks, that's the term I was looking for
But still the most important thing is that his 4:3 TV versions feature much more "visual information" than his theatrical & DVD releases.

I am adamant that I pick up the OAR version of a film when I buy it on DVD and this has sometimes led to me buying DVDs from overseas (to avoid an incorrect aspect ratio on the local DVD release). However, as I've said in the Harry Potter threads, I would really like to see some of the "more visual information" versions of Super35 films. James Cameron is probably the most widely known director to use Super35 and seeing any of his films like this would be cool.

OK, in a few days this site will see my first project - The Abyss. I've searched my old collection of VHS tapes and I found Titanic and Aliens so much more goodies are planed I don't have the fullscreen Terminator movies, so if somebody here HAS them ...

The only foolscreen (intentional misspelling) that I am aware of having is "Remo Williams", because I seriously doubt a film of that nature will EVER be re-released in widescreen,

I have the fullscreen movies of T1 and T2 on old tapes (and T3 on an official DVD), but they contain Dutch subtitles and I think the quality is not the best....

I got mine via Ebay.

There are 2 remarkable things about the T3 fullscreen DVD:
1) you see one of the T-X's boobies during her naked walk... hmn, perhaps the reason why I imported the DVD from the USA :-D
2) there are some errors visibile in the fullscreen cut, which were not visible during the widescreen (simply because that area is cut off by the black bars). When Kate takes John's paintball gun, she takes it twice (or something like that, I don't remember it clearly). Another thing is when the T-850 starts firing his gun at the cemetery. Because of the visible area (that was normally hidden by black bars) you see that he already starts firing quickly after this turn towards the screen. But the audio of the machine gun is not starting yet with this (newly) visible area.

That's interesting, I never even thought they release a fullscreen version on DVD Were also some other movies released officially in 4:3 on DVD, or only T3 ? (Even when it's NOT a JC movie )

I only know that T3 has been released in fullscreen DVD in the USA, and not internationally. So far I know T2 has always been released in widescreen on DVD. I'm not sure about T1 though.

Ofcourse other movies then JC's movies are released on fullscreen. It did happen with the Lord Of The Rings trilogy set and the Star Wars boxset as far I as can remember clearly. But to sticky to this James cameron topic, I'm not sure about his other movies.

I do have a DVD dedicated to him, a documentary which is also in fullscreen, but about his movies... I don't know.

For a non-Cameron example, I believe the European releases of Smokey and the Bandit are 4:3 open-matte.
I don't actually own an R2 disc, but I've seen it as DivX or XviD or one of those MPEG-4 flavours.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Just because they're shot open matte doesn't mean the matted areas are meant to be seen. The pan & scan versions are NOT just opened up. T2, for example, has extensive re-framing ranging from zooming in a lot to opening up most. Also, all effects shots (CGI or optical) are hard-matted to at least 2:1. So, you're losing picture. Original prints of Aliens were hard-matted to 1.75:1, too. James Cameron always shot the films for the theatrical aspect ratio. He would at least supervise the pan & scan versions, but it's not like your ordinary open matte.

The Harry Potter films, as well as the Lord of the Rings films were all shot in Super-35, but since they had digital intermediates, the most they can be opened up to is around 1.78:1. Same thing for The Matrix trilogy. In fact, in The Matrix, there's a ton of mistakes visible when the mattes are off. You can see greenscreen that was never filled in, for example. Of course, any special effects shot is cropped a ton on the sides. A lot of directors won't even allow pan & scan versions on DVD. Take note on how the Pirates of the Caribbean films are widescreen-only, despite being Super-35. David Fincher shoots in Super-35, but Seven, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, and Zodiac are all without pan & scan except on TV.

But if you want it just for the nudity, you might as well go all the way and support pan & scan so your TV can be filled up.


As for other mistakes caused by not correctly framing for widescreen, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure has two shots ruined. You can see road signs being pushed along a track and a chain being pulled out of a hole. The Godfather has to be zoomed in a lot since there's boom mikes in nearly every shot if you take off the mattes. The Cable Guy is Super-35, but the entire film is panned and scanned from the 2.35:1 image.

All 3 Sailor Moon movies were open-matte in the US, and some animation errors are visible for that reason.

Since we're talking about James Cameron movies. Is there someone who has the edited tv cut of The Terminator? With the alternate gunstore scene and altered lines of dialogue?

I have an AVI that I encoded of a version of Terminator 1 that aired recently on Fox 29. It's not the TV cut I remember though, the cutting away when T800 shoots the wrong Sarah Connor isn't there.

I was actually rooting for the next alternate shot (from IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088247/alternateversions):
Another alternate take that was shown in the Canadian television version was during the scene where the Terminator shoots the owner of the gun shop. In the theatrical version, you actually see the owner get blown away, but in the television version, it replaces this with a view from outside the store. You hear the shotgun blast and then you see the door of the shop swing open.


Also interesting are the alternate lines of dialogue:
When aired on TV, many alterations are made. Like when Terminator confronts the punks and orders them to turn over their clothes, Bill Paxton's response of "Fuck you, Asshole" is changed to "Eat this, scum!"; Vukovich's remark of 'Like shit, boss' is changed to 'Like you've been dead for a week'; etc. etc.


Molly, do you know if your tv cut has these changes and the alternate shot?

Shooting the store owner - One shot seen from gun vantage point, then cutaway to (Kyle?) sawing off the end of a shotgun.

Shooting the wrong Sarah - One blast seen (vs. 6 in the OTV)

How do I look - Like shit - Yo mama - Removed.

This isn't the TV cut I'm familiar with, unfortunately, which is the exact one you describe. I labelled it "New TV Cut". (it also uses a stereo mix, which the original prolly didn't.)

Too bad. I was actually hoping for the alternate scene of the gunstore killing, with the door just swinging open.

Speaking of Super 35 films, how was The Pursuit of Happyness shot? I saw it at an advance screening and I thought it looked 1.85:1 but the widescreen dvd is 2.40:1, plus the preview on the Casino Royale dvd completely fills a widescreen tv.
