Advice for someone getting into Star Wars games?

I’ve got a few weeks of dead time coming up (vacation!), and I was thinking about getting into some of the more recent SW video games. I’ve studiously avoided purchasing or playing them, knowing that if I did so, my schoolwork would suffer immensely, if not cease entirely.

Back in the day, I played quite a bit of Rebel Assault, TIE Fighter (to a lesser extent, X-Wing), and Dark Forces. I played all the arcade games and the NES/SNES series. (Oh yes: Star Wars Chess. Love it. Still have it.) I did try Battlegrounds; I don’t think I’m so good at that kind of game.

I’ve read that KotOR is the best, but I’m more of an OT purist, so I’m not sure that I’d be as interested in something set outside the trilogy. But I’d be willing to take a shot with it if people think it’s worth the time.

Any feedback would be helpful and welcome–PMs are on, by the way.

The best SW game I've ever played is far and away Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. It has a really potent OT vibe going on in it, and lot of imaginitive levels.

TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance and Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight are all excellent games, I definately recommend those. I myself don't like very much Jedi Outcast, but it isn't bad. From the newer games KotOR is the best one, and it competes with the older ones. I don't like the PT much either, but this game just kicks butt. Its sequel on the other hand... nah. But it also is worth trying, it just isn't near to the first one.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

TIE fighter and X-wing are great Star Wars games. If you like RPGs, KOTOR is a great game as well. It isn't really PT era, but way before the PT era. For cute silliness, Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars II are also good games.

Yup, JK2 is great; check out JK3 as well. The plot sucks, but its online mode is GREAT when you ad JA+ (find it at jk2files.com). What makes those two games so great is the active modding community; so you could play as, say Link from LoZ in SP instead of Jaden.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I should add that I did play Lego SW with my 8-year-old cousin once--it was a lot of fun.

EDIT: I installed Empire at War because a friend happened to have it. Now, no one has recommended this game as particularly great, and yet I somehow spent 90 minutes playing it with no sense of time flying by. This is the danger with these games . . .

I loved the first Rogue Squadron on Nintendo64. I spent hours upon goddamn hours trying to get golds in every level and for the most part it never got old. This was of course in 1998 when I was 11 and still a pure SW fan...before the dark times...and before PS2.

Yeah, I love KOTOR I, Jedi Outcast was pretty damn good too. Both Battlefronts are enjoyable. Empire At War is very good if you love strategy games and you have a stellar gaming rig to get it's full potential.

You could also try Battle of Yavin, a short free game reproducing the assault on the Death Star. It has the original score playing opportunely through the stages and the coolest adaptation of the trench run to date.

Definitely KOTOR! Cool characters, plot twists, good action, and you can be light or dark side depending on your character's choices.

don't touch "starfighter" on the ps2 with a barge pole!
