STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION — Page 53

Adywan, about the detail lost in the sandcrawler scenes on the 2004 dvds, couldn't you replace the 2004 shots with footage from that 1997 special edition HD transfer I'm always hearing about. Or would that not work for one reason or another.

AvatarX: that mesh looks really nice. Obviously could do with some grubbying up and so on, but it'd be wicked ace to have some all-new FX shots for ANH.

Incidentally, adywan, here's a thought that you've probably already thought: will we be able to see Yavin in the background during the Death Star battle, and not just on the approach? That'd be neat, even if it's just in one appropriate shot.

Could you possibly lift Jar Jar out of TPM and put him in one shot in ANH? Maybe somewhere in Mos Eisley? Like Where's Waldo? -- Where's Jar Jar?

Blaspheme!!!!

Dear god no! Please do not contaminate the original trilogy with Jar Jar....

I think the better question would be, "Adywan, could you please take Jar-Jar OUT of the prequels?"

Adywan,

Longtime member, infrequent poster, and a "vintage era" Star Wars fan, but I have to comment on this. I have read all 60+ pages of this thread with rapt fascination. For the last 10 years, until seeing this thread, I used to be a Special Edition hater - a HATER. I grew up in the early 1980s and can't shake the dislike for Lucas' revised vision, but I realized after watching your trailer - your freaking AMAZING trailer - I realized like a lightning bolt hitting my brain WHY I hated Lucas' Special Editions. Lucas DIDN'T COMMIT to the facelift. What I realize I loathe about the Special Editions are their patchwork feel and misplaced excesses and restraints. Where Lucas should have used moderation, he goes too far and changes story. Where he holds back he should have pushed the technology and polished the rough aesthetic edges. It is clear to me now that for him the Special Edition was about being a test bed for the Prequels, not a committed effort to facelift the original films.

I absolutely LOVE the work you are doing on this, and I am a tough critic. I don't watch the prequels and could not stomach the special editions, but I am genuinely excited by what you are producing here and I hope those at Lucasfilm feel shame at what they could have accomplished that you beat them to the punch with. While I still hope and pray the original unaltered trilogy makes its way to an anamorphic hi-def format sometime in the future, I would like to say to you with all conviction that THIS WAS THE SPECIAL EDITION I WAS HOPING FOR IN 1997 - A complete cleanup and polish job from scene-to-scene creating aesthetic uniformity and not a "fix this, leave that broken, but fix this" kind of game. I hope I have the honour and privilege of one day playing this version of Star Wars in my home theatre.

Thank you, Adywan. Your work has forced a pleasant and mind-settling epiphany upon me and I am forever grateful. Although I zealously see the original ESB as a perfect film and its existing SE as a travesty, I hope you will visit ESB with one of your ideas of a special edition because now I am truly excited to see Star Wars Special Editions.

Highest regards,
nohandluke

I know the expected release date has past so there's no point in rushing anything. But can you give us an updated ETA?
I'm hoping to have this out by the 30th anniversary of the UK release, November, at the latest.

Jar Jar definitely will not be in the OT. He features in one of the special features deleted scenes (the cut extended death of Alderaan scene), but not in the main movies.
Adywan, have you considered the mesh idea from Tellan?
Yes, i have. I will be contacting jedilaw for permission to use his meshes and then hopefully find someone who would be willing to help me out with a couple of shots (nudge nudge, wink wink tellan. lol )
Yes, the jump cut from matt painting to model when we race into the trench in POV needs to be fixed.

I'm working on that at the moment using the model shot to create the matte. Should flow together more smoothly.

Is there a HD transfer of the 1997 SE? I thought that there was only a 2004 version transfer ever aired. If there was a 1997 HD version then i would have been using that from the start. Would have saved me a lot of colour correction.
Incidentally, adywan, here's a thought that you've probably already thought: will we be able to see Yavin in the background during the Death Star battle, and not just on the approach? That'd be neat, even if it's just in one appropriate shot.

Yes, Yavin will be present in some shots.

nohandluke. thanks for your great comments. I hope this edit won't put you off the SE's again.

Ok, heres something from the scene i have just finished. For all you guys that have waited 30 years for this:

Adywan, The transfer I was reffering to was from the
HDTV 1080p versions released on Usenet awhile back(German & English versions)

That quote is from another thread on this forum titled "1997 SE TB Digital Broadcasts". I have not read all the way through the thread, but you might want to look into it if you think it could help you with bits of detail that were lost on the 2004 transfers, like the sandcrawler shots.

Also, that shot of Chewbacca with a medal is very cool

...and of course, Chewbacca's medal was "presented at an earlier ceremony held at the Grand Ballroom of the Ramada Inn."

I attempted to remove shadows a while ago but i gave up because this was so difficult to do. shadows cast on walls were easy to remove but when they are cast on clothing and moving objects it is a lot more difficult to do so i dropped doing it. I will leave this for someone else to fix in their edit.

Oh you now this will just eat at you until you decide to just fix it yourself. But seriously, no biggie on this one, though it does look very nice with the shadow painted out.

Shadows not withstanding, are you adding in the ambient glow from the sabers onto the people/immediate vicinity of the blades?

There are standard resolution broadcasts of the 97 SE (from that time period up til before the DVD releases) that have been recorded, but the HD releases are the 2004 versions of the films.

Ady, the SE's also had the colors altered to up the contrast and brightness.

Thanks for clearing that up. The thread was very misleading in this matter. I just read it, and no one ever said whether or not the "HDTV 1080p versions released on Usenet awhile back" were the 1997 versions. It really is too bad that no version exists in high enough resolution to restore the detail lost on the 2004 dvd.

Adywan,

I have a technical question. Being a film professional and home video guy myself, I know this is not the result of your efforts but likely the playback of footage in the UK here on US programs or something, but the dialogue is SLIGHTLY higher pitched and seems slightly sped up Is this a PAL thing? - Is there an adjustment I need to make on my viewing software, and if so what is it, or will there at some point be an NTSC version of this to view? I hope so, because I have a feeling after this is finished, it's the only version of Star Wars I'm going to want to watch.

It's not the way I remember it, but it sure as hell is the way I WANT to remember it from now on!

It's a pal thing - it threw me off at first too. For some reason everyone in Europe likes their movies fast. XD

It's not because we like movies faster, it's because our "normal" TVs work at 50Hz, so the process of speeding up the 24fps video to 25fps and interlacing it to 50i was the most easy and the fastest soulution when the PAL format was invented

I'm willing to give this a shot. I just need to figure out how to edit the footage from the HD 2004 version. I have no idea how to crop the segment from a ts file, you know? I want to export it to tga or png files so I can edit them in photoshop. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?

Ha ha ha. It could always have happened while the camera is looking at R2 wiggling.

That medal looks great. Thanks for doing that, Ady.

this shit just keeps gettin' better

just watched the ben's death/faclon vs ties sequence
new exterior shots and upgrades to targeting are awesome

one change that would perfect this shot for me is correcting the following
1:30:48 as han takes out the final tie it's flying right at him from what seems like a long distance
his shots are only just missing - he swings his gun from one extreme to the other (which looks really cool) just to make a slight adjustment to the target
it would be great if the tie rolled toward the left of the screen before han's swing and exploded at an angle that made more sense

picky i know but what the hell - you've corrected stuff for a lot less (no bad thing mind)

there's also a similar shot with luke at 1:30:40 but this is far less anoying as the battle is more confusing at that point
figrin d'an and the modal nodes - best band name ever!

Gosh, I hope there is an eventual NTSC version of this. I watched the Tie Attack clip and honestly found myself getting excited in a way that hasn't happened since I saw Return of the Jedi in the theater in 1983. Unlike sitting in the theater for the 1997 SEs, adywan, your work has captured my imagination. I'm getting excited about Star Wars again, something I didn't think would happen. I'm having a hard time explaining it to my friends and family, who know that I walked away from everything but the OUT in 2002 after AOTC was such a disappointment for me.

Not only is this a super polish, but you've also apparently given us the benefit of seeing Jar-Jar die like he deserves with each viewing. I only wish I could have seen those other initial clips, the Alderaan sequence, the original trailer, the effects montage, etc., all of which have expired on rapidshare... Oh well, maybe they'll be posted again by someone who has saved them.

Thanks again Adywan, I'm waiting for November. Incidentally, if there is anything I can do to help, anything at all, PM me.

adywan, is there any chance you could send me the clip of Obi-Wan in the cantina, so I could give it a shot and try to manually remove the shadows?
