Sweet, couches in the theater! This might be worth checking out. I think this is a good sign for the future of theaters - at least it's not stadium seating. THoughts?

Looks good. They need to get a handle on the noise and such as well, though. I refuse to go to the theater at the mall near me because the locals bring their babies in, talk on cell phones, and are generally rude. If they did that I'd feel good about going again.

Babies in the theatre? Talking on cell phones? WTF!?! If someone is talking on a cell phone in theatre and he's within range I would punch him.

Do you not live in the US?

Honestly, every time I go to the theater some people have ringing cellphones, another group of jackasses keeps talking throughout the movie, etc. Fucking obnoxious. I only go to the theater these days when it's a movie I really "need" to see on the big screen, otherwise I wait for the DVD and enjoy it in my home theater.

Lots of the time shutting them up really isn't an option. I'd like to see you shush, let alone punch in the face, a 6'4" 250 pound black dude sitting with about 10 of his buddies. Good luck with that.

And those couches aren't a good idea either.... they'd get covered in sticky shit, bubble gum, old greasy popcorn, and spilled soda in about 4 hours. It would be like sitting on an old, rancid concession stand sponge

The seating isn't the problem, the people are.

I dunno, maybe it's jsut where I live, but people talking through the film and talking cell phones aren't really a problem around here.

The worst we get at a typical movie is a bunch of girls gasping and giggling when Johnny Depp comes on screen topless.

Johnny Depp has tits?

Consider yourself lucky though, seriously. You have to be in the minority here not bothered by assholes in the theater. Seriously, I go any of the 6 or 7 theaters around me and it's every fucking one man. Fucking honestly man, it bothers me.

If more theaters were like the ArcLight (in Hollywood), I'd go more often. No cell phones allowed (not sure how they enforce it, but I've heard they don't allow them in, period), no children allowed, doors close at showtime and you're not allowed in after that, assigned seating, and you can order food right from your seat (good food like lasagna or spaghetti and beer or wine). It costs a bit more ($15/ticket I think), but it'd totally be worth it. It's to far to drive for me, but if there was a theater in the area that was like that, I'd go there all the time.

No, I'm not from the US. And I've never had problems with cellphones in the theatre, let alone babies. I still don't understand the theatre allows babies.
Well, I'm not 250 pound, but I am 6.5'.
When the theatre is not very crowded you can sit where you want so there's plenty of room and you won't have trouble with your neighbours anyway. When it is crowded you sit by number and there's personel of the theatre to make sure everything goes smooth. If you can't shut up you'll get a flashlight in your face. But it really is hardly ever necessary.

I'm with Dinkins (Stinky?). The only movies I've seen in the theater since TPM were ROTS, Finding Nemo, Charlette's Web and Night in the Museum - all of which were mainly to take my children. I always, always, ALWAYS get the dude talking or the kid kicking my seat right behind me (this even at a recent baseball game. They were also blowing whistles for every fucking play.). One time I had kids throwing skittles from the back of the crowded theater.

It's just not fucking worth it. All that money and time wasted on gas, tickets and food? Not for me. Netflix has made my life so much easier.

Amen. This is why I want to invest in a decent home theater system. NetFlix and iTunes are God-sends IMO. The only movies I've seen in theaters this year are Spidey 3 (BLEH) and Grindhouse (RULED).

I too feel Stinky's pain. My local theater (and the ones in surrounding vacinities) are so infested with your garden variety degenerate that it's just not worth going. If it's something I need to see, which is every few months, I go during the afternoon on opening day, because you know you'll be there with the more diehard movie freaks. Friday or saturday night? Forget it. It's all just people yelling at the screen, talking on cell phones, babies crying, people walking in 5 minutes after the damn movie has started expecting a seat right in the middle, fatty boombas getting up for their third, fourth, and fifth buckets of popcorn, ect.

Wow. I feel really lucky now. In my town, people are so polite at the theatre. People show up in advance, get all of their food before the film starts, and then they are basically quiet (although they did cheer when the Star Wars theme came on in ROTS). No cell phones, no crying babies. I didn't realize it was any different elsewhere.

Somebody sat a two-year-old next to me to see fucking JACKIE BROWN!!! I had half a mind to call social services on their ass right then and there. If you can't get a sitter, DON'T GO TO THE DAMN THEATRE! I used to see 1-2 movies a week at the theatre before kids. Now I'm lucky to see four a year, but that's life as a parent.

Somebody brought a child of the same age to The Da Vinci Code last year. Kid freaked the fuck out when Silas started whipping himself. I talked to the manager and asked him why the hell they didn't have a rule prohibiting kids under a certain age from seeing PG-13 and R movies. His answer: The theater chain got sued (by some fucktard in California of course) when they did just that. So every decent moviegoer now gets screwed because some dipshit wanted to take his underaged kid to see some R-rated gore-or-curse-or-fuckfest and sued for the "right."

What's the fucking point of MPAA ratings if the theatres cannot enforce them? Moreover, what are we coming to when a business cannot reserve the right to refuse service to people who will disrupt the business?

Think this sucks? Write the MPAA and NATO, plus your representatives in your state legislature. It wouldn't hurt to write the theatre chain as well, just so they know where you stand.

Is that the one that has dinner tables in the theater? I've been wanting to try that. Sure, it's expensive, but that alone would hopefully keep the "I'm bored so let's go see a movie" riff-raff out.

Technically, R doesn't mean under 17 not allowed. It means under 17 not allowed without parent or guardian. So the guy was fully within his rights to demand they allow him to bring a child into an R rated movie. NC-17 (equivalent to X) means no one under 17 allowed, period.

If they wanted to stop people from bringing their kids to R rated movies, they'd have to make it a law and make it a fine. Then the theater chains would actually have to higher people to card everyone as they enter the auditorium. Theater attendance is at an all time low (seems to get lower every year), so the cinemas would fight this tooth and nail. Fortunately, it's easy enough for the rest of us to just continue supporting the theaters that enforce the ratings and not go to the ones that don't.

I personally think there should be a law and that the theaters should be fined if someone underage gets in. The theater chains should also step up to the plate and kick people out that talk loud, use their cell phones during the movie, and otherwise ruin the experience for everyone. If they want attendance to increase, they'll do these things. As it is, attendance will continue to go down as people just wait for the DVD release and watch it in the comfort of their own home.

You're assuming going to a movie is a "right" in the first place. It isn't. It is a privilege. A theatre, on the other hand, has an obligation to provide the best level of service to its patrons. If that means refusing service to a group of patrons because of legitimate concerns that they will become disruptive, then the theatre is well within its rights to do so. While a theatre cannot use this argument to discriminate on the basis of race, sex, or ethnicity, there is no statute that prevents the exclusion of minors. The whole purpose of the ratings system is so that the industry can police itself without the need for government interference. If the government is getting in the way of that, as was the case by the judge even allowing this to come to trial, the legislators need to know.

The rudeness of theater patrons really depends on where you live, what specific theater you go to, what movie you see and also what time. If you live in the suburbs and hit the multiplex at 9 PM to see the latest summer blockbuster of course it will be overrun with rude, blabbering, cell-phone using, obnoxious teens. More mainstream films in more mainstream theater locations during peak hours (ie 7-10 PM on weekends) produce the biggest percentage of obnoxious patrons because during this time a lot of people there aren't there just to see the movie but to be part of a social engagement, so you often have larger groups of people that are at the theater after dinner but before they hit the club or whatever so their attention is more on the social aspect of being there rather than actually enjoying the film, hence you get stuff like cellphone ringing, saying stuff at the screen, and group chatter when more than four minutes goes by without an explosion or car chase.

I personally don't see a lot of the blockbuster type films anymore so I don't really have to deal with this stuff. I've found that most audiences even in such a hugely populated area such as downtown Toronto are pretty decent even at the city's biggest theaters; its more about the type of film itself--I'm sure the experience of watching Fast and Furious 3 in a theater would be more painful than the actual film because it attracts a lot of people more prone to be jackasses. There's also the fact that rudeness varies on a regional basis--usually in areas less metropolitan in my experience, but again, my theory is that its entirely dependent on the type of film myself; if you were to see a foreign film in a Florida suburb (just hypothetically) chances are that the one or two people in the theater would be there to enjoy the film and would be respectful of the enjoyment of anyone else in the theater, whereas if you were to see Spiderman 3 in the same theater chances are it would be packed with a lot of people that would make for an irritating viewing experience.
I'm not sure why, but just based on reports and observation, this whole thing as a significant problem seems to be more prevalent around the southern US states; movies have always had annoying patrons, and certainly it seems to have sharply increased since the late 90's, but I always hear of the worst problems from the south US for some reason; maybe films just aren't treated as seriously there? I've noticed that rude patronage sometimes corresponds to a lack of respect for whats onscreen.

I agree that it seems to vary from region to region. I live in the North East U.S. and it's quite an epidemic here, unfortunately. One thing I believe is key is that if there's something around that the teens and riff-raff will be attracted to then you're more likely to have a problem. For example, the theater at the mall near here is the big problem one. If I drive 15 minutes up the interstate to a theater that's JUST a theater with no malls around the problem won't be as bad. However, I still try to go during the week to an earlier show. That's sad. If it comes to that to enjoy a movie then we may as well just build the home theaters and write off movie houses now. The only hope are the more upscale, expensive theaters. There's one in a major city near me that shows mostly art-house stuff, but also classics on Sundays. They serve alcohol so it's 21 and over only. Not enough of those places around. The other folks are right though, the theaters need to grow a pair and start tossing these a##holes.

On the subject of bringing kids into rated R films. I think it's pretty short-sighted just to dissallow kids in it with a parent just becuase, they might be a potential annoyance. It's one thing kicking them out when they do become an annoyance. It's another just not allowing them to go. Simply becuase, the majority of times I've had annoyances in the theater it was by some peoples well over 18. Hell, when I saw Hannibal I was under 18 and, I was annoyed by the nervous laughter of the audience. The rest of whom were adults(yes I was the only kid). I was the only one staying quiet in that theater.

Hok, went today; very loud projector. The seats are really nice, but stay away from the couch in front. A very small screen which the projector was incorrectly alligned to (lots of black on top area). A nice idea in theory, but I would've rather they keep the outside area - I'm gonna miss that Tony Roma's restaurant...
