Family Guy' meets 'Star Wars'
Toon kicking off season with approved spoof

By JOSEF ADALIAN

The Force is with "Family Guy."

Fox's animated hit will kick off its fifth season this fall with an hourlong episode that retells the "Star Wars" saga using "Family Guy" characters.

Lucasfilm has blessed the event, which will have the Griffin family acting out all the key scenes and narrative from "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," the first installment of the franchise. "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane is a major "Star Wars" fan and was personally involved in getting Lucasfilm on board, an exec from 20th Century Fox TV said.

Family patriarch Peter Griffin will play the role of Han Solo, while mom Lois will appear as Princess Leia. Evil baby Stewie will be Darth Vader, natch.

Brian the family dog will serve as Chewbacca, while son Chris is Luke. Robots R2-D2 and C-3PO will be handled by Cleveland and Quagmire, respectively, while creepy old guy Herbert plays Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Plot of the episode has the Griffin family stuck at home during a blackout. With no TV to entertain them, Peter decides to tell a story -- leading to the "Star Wars" flashback.

Planning for the seg began more than a year ago. MacFarlane wasset to show off footage from the episode at the "Star Wars" mega-convention in Los Angeles.

MacFarlane and the "Family Guy" writers have shown a strong interest in "Star Wars," serving up several mini-spoofs of the franchise in years past.

In addition to the "Star Wars" tribute, "Family Guy" will mark its 100th episode next season with a two-part special set to air in November.

This sounds totally awsome to me. I love Family Guy!

As do I. And their SW jokes have always been awesome.

I remember it being very funny, but in the later years it has become more of a political mouthpiece of Seth McFarlane (I could be wrong)

Between this and Robot Chicken, why the sudden urge to have Lucasfilm's blessing these days?

Where were you in '77?

I'm in the not funny category. I mean the show, that is. Um, not funny. They do some clever things some times, but most of it is "Hey, check out this obscure reference to this weird 80's kids TV show. No real joke, just something random."

But if it is Star Wars... we'll see, I suppose. Could be good. Maybe.

Granted Seth McFarlane is a liberal wacko and you have to have a certain sense of humor for this show including a wide knowledge of pop culture, but I still like it. Funny as hell to me!

They probably have to get it "approved" by Lucasfilm because if they're gonna use certain copyrighted music/names/items and if they bad-mouth something LFL doesn't like all they gotta do is say no.

On the otherhand...I thought spoofing something was immune from that copyright stuff.

I can see the tired-ass Family Guy formula at work:

"You think that's bad? Remember the time on the Pulp Fiction set when Samuel L. Jackson ate womp rat while John Travolta chatted up George Lucas?"

"Yo mutha[BEEP], womp rat may taste like pumpkin pie but I'd never know 'cause I'd never eat the filthy mutha[BEEP]."

"So, like, George, both our sons are named Jett. That's so weird."
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

Ha - this was great! I just finished watching it.

It was pretty nice how it heavily followed the original version of the film. Was the animation rotoscoped over the original film? Some of it was spot-on.

Also, did anyone else notice that the Millennium Falcon had a sensor dish when it was parked in Mos Eisley? Now we can add Family Guy to the folks like Adywan and Darth Editous who have corrected that.

"Great job kid - don't get penis-y!"

Never watched this show before, but that was great. "Hi I am Han Solo, and I am the only who had a career after these movies!"

Han Shot first! The deatstar didn't have a ring around it when it blew up! No Jabba!

Cheers to Star Wars 1977 Version, see George, this version still does exist when you don't have control!

I thought it was pretty good. It would have been great to see it with a bunch of Star Wars geeks like the preview at CIV. It would have been a lot more funny that way I think, sorta like stand up comedy. But it still had it's moments and I thought the robot chicken debate was great at the end.

Agree generalfrevious, I thought Family Guy used to be pretty damn funny back before it was canceled. They'd have some pretty funny moments throughout each ep, then would have a killer line or 2 that made the ep pretty damn good. With the exception of tonights ep, since it's return it seems like they try to have the killer line every other joke which they don't pull off. They try too hard and should go back to their old formula which made it a pretty damn good show to watch. Not the mediocre show it is now.

I've just finished watching it and i loved it. Problem is i woke the wife up laughing (its 5.30am here in the Uk) so i'm in the dog house now, but who cares. lol I loved the way they seemed to keep to the original version with only a couple (if that) SE references. It would have been great watching it with a live audience like yanksno1 said. I'm going to watch it again later with the wife & kids. Plus there is a couple of explosions in there that i can steal for my edit

I gotta say... my favourite two moments were

"Oh no! John Williams!...Great... now we'll have to use Danny Elfman."

and lastly the spoof from Airplane!

"And Leia is getting laaaaar-ger!" lol

Is it not sad that in this time, we are more surprised by acts of love than acts of hate?

Good but not great. My favorite gag was the Doctor Who reference.

Still I can't help but think about the hypocrisy of George Lucas.

Han Shoots First = Bad for kids

Pedophile Obi-Wan = Perfectly fine

Loved it. What was the Doctor Who reference? I thought it was interesting how some shots were from the SE while others were original. The sunset had the '93 colors. The "Look Sir Droids" didn't have all that stupid stuff. Most interestingly, the take off from Yavin was '97 but flying by the gas giant was original. Although the conversation was totally different with Greedo, Han shot him. period.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

Pretty entertaining from beginning to end.

-hilarious opening crawl. "A long time ago but somehow in the future"
-I noticed Obi-Wan's krayt dragon call was the '04 version.
-"It surrounds us and penetrates us"
-Coach McGuirk in the cantina!
-the 70's cinematography with the blown out lighting from the windows.
-SE Millennium Falcon takeoff but OOT ascent.
-3PO freaking out, "just tell me I don't have to stay in this room"
-"Red October standing by"=awesome
-and yes, that second Airplane reference was golden

It was funny for two reasons, one being it was 100% new and an hour long and two being it's a show based entirely around reference humor and the Star Wars ones have been constant since it came back on the air if not increasing in frequency, the most obvious being the awards ceremony in that episode that aired shortly before ROTS was released.
