I don't understand how this applies. If Mitch is started with the 2.35:1 image, he'll still need to cut off the sides to get it to 1.85:1. Unless he's working from a fullscreen (unmatted) transfer of the film, everything in the 2.35 image he's using is considered "important". Or are you saying that the film was shot in 2.35 with extraneous information on the sides, which would be a relatively uncommon way of shooting a movie.
