thanks for your reply adywan.
Like I said, it was just a question, seeing as other changes have been made.
I once wondered if it was going to be shortened to "this unit" leaving out the "R2" end of things. But leaving it "as is" is fine by me.
My statements about insignias, etc. were rhetorical in nature in the discussion. I'm thrilled you've made these changes
Keep up the great work!

hi all, I'm an infrequent poster around these parts, but I lurk a lot, and I'm quite interested in the fan edit phenomenon, especially people doing their own effects work. So cool. Adywan I just wanted to cheer you on a bit with what your doing here, I absolutely cannot wait to see this when its done. I've watched a couple of the clips you've posted at rapidshare, the Aleraan explosion and the Falcon/Tie fighter battle, both of which look awesome. Also I'm glad you decided to omit the Jabba scene, its just plain extraneous.
I'm super curious about the facial movements for the cantina aliens.
I also like the idea of the battle droid and ep. 1 looking tatooine landscapes. There's such a huge disconnect between the OT and the PT, I like anything to tie them a bit closer together. Now if you can just replace the pod-racers with skyhoppers?
You know one thing I didn't notice on your list is that little bit of reversed footage with the Tusken Raider waiving his stick around (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about) although I'm not sure what could be done to fix it.
One thing I will say, is I kind of hate to see those blue insignias go, because as a kid I liked them. In fact it never occurred that there should be a "blue squadron" to go with those blue insignias, I just chalked it up to the rebels having mismatched equipment. I mean Biggs has some kinda black and yellow checkerboard pattern on his, doesn't he? Anyway I certainly don't want to be counted amongst the "complainers," and knowing now that there was once a "blue squadron" I can appreciate the logic in making them red.
So anyway bottom line is thanks for doing this, I am super-excited about this project.
can't you shut that chicken up?

To answer DGC General X:

Tellan is correct, although the laser arms are missing from the studio cockpit set, the angle would mean that you wouldn't see them anyway.

As for the stormtrooper voices: I have no plan on changing any of their speech with any Temuera Morrison dialogue. I'm not sure why you posted the link to the Youtube stormtrooper clip twice because that won't convince me otherwise. Watching that has actually convinced me against doing anything like this.

OK, onto something new.

Doing the FX work for the Death Star battle is taking more time than i had first hoped, but i'm going to be taking my time on this section. I want it to be more in line with the ROTJ battle. So more ships and dogfights but this means twice as much work as i had originally planned. So the release date is looking even further away. But it will be worth it in the end. Hopefully i will be able to get this out in time for the 30th anniversary of the UK release of Star Wars (November). I definitely want this out in time for then at the latest.

Well its almost the official 30th anniversary so here's a little something to wet your appetite. Its a split screen comparison from the Luke & Biggs SE scene up to the beginning of the DS battle. It will hopefully give you all some idea of just how different this edit is going to look. This will definitely be the very last clip i will be posting. I don't want to spoil it for everyone by showing too much.

As usual the soundtrack it only a temp one so effects will be missing and out of sync at times and there are a couple of unfinished shots in there too. Also my footage somehow looks darker than it actually is. Not sure how that happened.

enjoy

Okay, love the work... have one quibble. You flipped the shot of Red Leader when he says "All wings report in," and in doing so "crossed the line". The ships in the previous shot start from the right of the screen and move to the left, so they are facing the left side of the screen. By flipping the shot Red Leader is now facing the right side of the screen, and it suggests he is now moving away from the rest of the ships.

This same principal was used in TESB when at the end of the film when the filmmakers flopped the shot of Admiral Piett as he approaches Vader and tells him the Falcon will be in range of the tractor beam. By flopping the shot Lucas and co created a continuity problem with Piett's rank insignia but the physics and geography of the film making process dictated that Piett approach Vader's left side as Vader was facing left on all of his close ups.

Just a little helpful suggestion.

I just watched the thing 8 freaking times. If I was over in the UK now, I'd drive to your house and give you a high five.

Cheers!

One of the rebels has only had one of his blue insignia changed to red (I don't have the video handy so I can't give you a timecode). Nice subtle touch on the rising X-Wing coming towards the camera.

Adywan! This new clip is most impressive!
I can’t tell you how excited I am!

I’d like to point out some of my favorite moments:

- Modified shot of xwing lifting forward and it’s “feet” retracting! It’s so seamless! This type of stuff just makes it easier to immerse oneself in the movie!

- The “Luke, the force will be with you.” Shot is also a welcome shot. I remember the first pass you did on this shot…this new one is even better!

- The newly edited “Stand by alert” segment works very well also! That never would’ve occurred to me to try different/alternate shots in those scenes…

- I am also wondering why the “All wings report in.” shot is flipped…? Screen direction is very important-…as I’m sure you know!

- Every shot you’ve added the red planet too…a simply wonderful and logical thing to do!

- The battle is actually (I hate to admit after all these years) making some sense! Originally, the beginning of the battle was kind of confusing. Of course, I’m assuming Lucas intended that. But you’ve cleared some things up for me now (such as where certain pilots are).

- About the temp shot after “This is red five, I’m goin’ in.”. I hope you’ll be able to make that shot more convincing. They look terrible compared to everything else!

I hope that encourages you to press on!

I'm actually still working on this shot and forgot to add the "temp shot" tag. It was flipped because of the continuity error with red leaders mic swapping sides, but it will be back in its original direction, with the mic on the correct side and yavin in the background.

I'm hoping i can do something with this shot too. I hate how the original looks too much like a model compared to other shots.

By far, my favorite part is the addition of Yavin in the background in several shots. Simply beautiful.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Adywan, I'm so impressed. There's only one thing that stood out to me, the shots of the X-wings moving towards the Death Star that were not changed for the special edition. The engine glow is finally red (thaks to you) but the glow was always a bit too sharp for me, I just don't feel that it matches the glows on the digital X-wings. I think that the white core has to smoothly overlap (or bleed into) the red glow a bit to emulate the digital glows. Other than that, I could not have hoped for better shots. Keep up the good work!

Wow...Im beginning to sound like a stuck record but yet again that was awesome!!

Surely you must work for Lucasfilm!

Although ironically given the quality of the changes I guess you dont!!!

Adywan as usual this is an understatement, I am in awe of how well you fixed this shot and it is now perfect. Considering ILM gave up on trying to fix it properly it is a testiment to your hard work and skill. I cannot wait to see the final version of the Death Star battle.

Adywan,

Great work as usual. One thing that you might consider and that is adding Yavin to all of the interior cockpit shots. Each pilot is flying towards the Death Star and presumably Yavin should be seen in everyone's cockpit. Just a minor nit for consistency's sake. Otherwise, you continue to amaze and impress.

What's the Astromech jump cut everyone is referring to?

And why, yes, I am an unwashed, ignorant heathen...

In the SE extra scene when Biggs meets Luke in the rebel hanger just keep an eye on R2-D2 in the background. They added the person walking in front of the camera to hide the fact that they cut out a section where Red Leader starts talking about Luke's father, but this results in R2 suddenly jumping position quite noticeably.
