You can format the text pretty much as you want it in AE as well, but I think I had to search a little to find all the settings and such. I just love the simplicity of seeing the change immediately.

Anytime I ever tried it the justify button was grayed out and unusable. All of the tutorials I've ever seen that used AE directly just ignored it and the text was "ragged right".

Really? Hmm. It's been a while since I did a crawl. I'll have to look it up, but I know I got the text justified the way I wanted within AE.

The Mini Mini tutorial for AE7:
-Have a background image (still frame from just before the camera pan down to the planet)
-Look around originaltrilogy.com to find the right fonts for the logo and all the text.
-Make a new composition in AE. Put the background image there and add all the text and the logo. Also add a camera with default settings.
-Check the "make 3D" box for your layer with the crawl text. Move the camera so that the crawl text gets the right perspective. (Only change the camera, not the text.)
-Using keyframes, animate the Star Wars logo flying away from view. I simply scale it down. Same basic effect.
-Animate the text on the Y-axis, simply going from down to up. The tilted look is achieved by the camera you added earlier.
-Fade out the text when it's gone far enough.
-Celebrate your accomplishment with flutes and teddybears.

EDIT: justifying the text works fine for me. I uploaded a screen grab of what my composition in AE7 looks like:
