George Lucas calls Spiderman 3 'silly' — Page 2

I agree with Lucas' assessment of Spider-Man 3. I also think Attack of the Clones was a messier, less coherent, and far more boring movie (sadly). (Though, to be fair, I've seen Clones many times.)

Say what you want about the Prequels but they are no where near the mess that Spider-Man 3 is, at the script level. I mean, it's just plain bad on a lot of serious levels...things that should've been caught before this film even started shooting.

To get to your first point about the 'critics', Lucas is not a critic meaning part of the media, he is a fellow director, producer, etc, or part of that fraternity where none of these guys speak ill of other movies. I never see Spielberg going around saying, "The Mummy is just a total mess of a movie, and is a total remake of Indiana Jones." These guys always take the high road cause they don't want to put their fellow director down in case they do some crappy movie and the critics lambast that. So they are the last line of defense from the critics, and that is why none of them ever criticize other movies.

As for the scripts on the PT movies, sorry Jumpman but they are a mess too, and just the fact that Lucas was turning them in the DAY BEFORE PRINCIPLE PHOTOGRAPHY WAS SHOOTING on Episode III is ridiculous! Just watch the ROTS documentary Lucas shows up on the set on the first day with his final script! And then he totally changes the turn scene after he shoots it cause it comes off too quick!

The PT movies, though entertaining and fun to watch in a popcorn movie type of way are a total mess when it comes to the written story. You have Lucas have Padme losing the will to live yet her last words are, "Obiwan, there is still good in Anakin......" Is that the biggest contradiction, and it doesn't make any sense! If she thought there was still good in him, and she has 2 of her newborns sitting there right next to her, why would she lose the will to live? I mean that plot point may work for a 5 year old who loves lightsabers and space battles, but once a kid develops any rational sense of logic, that could go down as the stupidest plot point in the history of the saga.
I could go on and on about the scripts and how the PT was an utter mess, but it has been said before a million times.

The bottom line is I agree with Lucas that Spiderman is silly, and most summer blockbusters now compared to great ones when I grew up such as SW, Back to the Future, E.T., movies that actually had a story. But Lucas needs to look in the mirror cause the PT is part of that new vocabulary in Hollywood for fans who just get wowed by Special Effects, 'Silly.'

In my opinion the prequels suffer much more, since they had such an important predecessor in the classic trilogy they had to connect to. Lucas had much more control over what to do with the films than Raimi had. Putting that thought into mind, I can't take Lucas' criticism serious at all. He lost his credibility so many times by now that it's not even funny anymore.

I posted this on the Superman board but it was worth cross-posting over here.
Lucas needed to help script-polish Spidey 3. That way when Peter is dumping all that sand out of his boot after his first fight with Sandman, he could say something compelling like "I hate sand. It's rough, and course. And it gets in everything." Then cut to Peter's proposal-date where he says to MJ ... "Unlike here. Where everything is soft. And smooth. I love you Mary Jane Watson. You are in my very soul, tormenting me."

Then when MJ says "I can't believe you shared our kiss with her" have Peter reply with something really deep and moving. Like, "I'm haunted by the kiss that I shouldn't have given. I hope that it doesn't turn into a scar."

Add in some important expository scenes with Venom where he says, "How can you take pictures for the bugle and NOT have a staff position? It's insulting. And Jameson is worse ... he's overly critical ..." *throw an empty film canister* "In most ways ... I'm actually better than Peter Parker. It's all Peter's fault. He's holding me back!!! AND I HATE HIM!!!!!" *quivering lip*

Add in a few floating robots in the background for no reason whatsoever and it won't be so silly.

Hmm, this could be an interesting little fedit... Peter Parker dubbed over with Hayden's voice for those scenes, it could work. Be a fun little youtube video at any rate.

Possibly because many, many people think that the prequels are "silly" too. True, some don't. It's a mess at script level because the producers forced Raimi to shoehorn in elements which he didn't want to. Not to say that SM3 is necessarily a lot better than the prequels, but if ever there was a case of the pot calling the kettle black, this is it. I mean, how can Lucas, how wrote dialogue like "Yousa in deep doo-doo this time" call it "silly?" Jumpman, is there ANYTHING-any business decision, frame of film, line of dialogue, anything at all-that you think Lucas have EVER done wrong? I mean, you're perfectly entitled to you beliefs, but the words "in my opinion" keep failing to show up before you posts.

Referring to Episode IV as the "only good one" doesn't help your case in trying to make Lucas sound like a loon. It more or less makes you sound opinionated, rather than someone with a valid point.

Hmmm....
Yes. I'm sure Raimi 'wishes he could wish away' the messiness. Ha-ha.

It was inferior to the "Randall Curtis" episode, but it was still a good one.

That's great. I'd post it at TheForce.Net for all those kool-aid drinking sheep, but I'm banned.

We've analyzed their attack, sir, and there is a danger.

I haven't watched new Simpsons in a while but when I saw this I looked it up on wikipedia

Comic Book Guy said there was only one good Star Wars movie and that it was ruined by CGI

Can anyone post the actual quote?

Whoa!! Words fail me. I like how everything in there is PT. Very appropriate. After all, the PT IS something to be proud of. I mean who makes movies that bad and still has people lining up to see it opening night. Most impressive.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying bad movies. However there is something wrong with celebrating bad movies as if they were the grandest cinematic masterpieces of all time - at least in my book.
