I can never understand people buying ready computer sets, even those brand ones like NEC, Dell etc. ...

IMO it's best to make your own set in order to tweak the optimal performance/for a given price. This way you don't get scr*wed by the retailer who wants to squeeze in some lowsy/obsolete components.

I was lucky to upgrade (finally!) my system by buying parts in my friend's newly opened store - I got a discount for designing a logo for him.

Reinstalling the system was a pain - my old PC used to be just like a Mac - tweaked and optimized for my likes, running without major reinstall for few years! No kidding - I forgot how to install this Micro$oft sh*t Apart from forgetting my old skills there was another problem - the new stuff is quite "up-to-date", but I didn't want to move from Win98SE to WinXP for all the tresures in the world! Yes, I'm just insane, all my buddies were telling me I'm crazy to do this, yes I know - I loose some performance, like HyperThreading technology... but I'm not ready yet - I'm pretty conservative, I like evolution, but not revolution... So tweaking the new stuff to old OS took me 2 days... :/

I will move to the new sys someday (promise ), but I need free time and lots of patience/peace - and I don't have much of the latter recently... :/

And as for now everything is running smoothly

Well, I guess that depends... if it's a Gateway or a Packard Bell, I'd wager an Oscar Mayer weiner would work faster and more effectively.

Even this sentence proves you're Mac user

Amen! I just completed a massive upgrade this year, and had to go to Windows XP Pro because my computer was too much for Win 98. When I finish law school, I'm going Mac.

Oh I agree. I am in the PC world as well, remember? I was just trying to err on the side of caution. I never speak ill in front of my PC for fear that it will hear me and react accordingly. PCs have a mind of their own, you know.

....I wonder why does it have to be a female mind? j/k

Comparison - PCs vs Macs:

PC - Females:
* wow, just look at this equipment! and doesn't that radiator look really big? and the transparent menu!
* there's always something about them, either Y2K or Micro$oft anti-monopoly thing...
* they're on the posters, on the web... everywhere!
* men love them
* they cost you lots of money
* and want something new all the time, coz "the old stuff is so yesterday"
* when you buy it, it turns out you have to buy a matching set...
* ...and even then it's not guaranteed that everything will be running smoothly
* ...coz they have theit own ways...

Mac - Males
* nothing special really, they're out there somewhere, doing their job
* they work and don't complain
* they don't get old so quickly
* no whiz-bangs, but when it takes to complete the task, they will do
* stable system - you know exactly what they want and can easily control them
* they don't change the OS 5 times a day - once you install it, it's there

.... or is it just me?

RSS is right, The MAC rules by far. I just wish that more games were MAC friendly. Up at my old College, they had a MAC that ran Media 100. That is a professional Editor that is about 5 years old now. They just put the latest version of Adobe photoshop and Aftereffects on that machine and it's been running smoothly. No problems. But when they put the new version of Premiere on the PC's, they had to tool with it for two to three hours before it worked. And they just bought new systems last year!

I'm glad to see that you share my point of view.

What's the latest Premiere's version - 7 ? I need to "test" it
Even though I was laughed up for playing in video editing on a PC, instead of Mac... sc**w them, that was 2 years ago...

UPDATE: I've broken my headphones on the New Year's Eve (no jokes needed here, I was sober) and my machine is soundless now as my speakers need fixing, too

Same thing happened at my school. Granted it was 4+ years ago. They bought completely new PCs for a video editing lab (against the TAs' advice who insisted on Macs). We had techs called in at least once to twice a week to tweak the systems folders on these computers. Each computer, despite having exactly the same hardware and software installed, worked differently and people all had their favorites. There were two computers that were avoided altogether because they never seemed to work properly. Worst investment of money that I've ever seen.

As for G4 girl... Hellloooooo Nurse!! Also gotta say that I love the Biblical overtones inherent in the picture with the Apple logo covering her womanhood. I wonder if that was intentional.

Can't wait for G5 girl... the upgrade! Much faster than G4 girl (take that however you want).

Hey all, I just "acquired" a new computer. My old boss had an iBook (the little white ones) and she moved on to a different job. So, since no one else on campus really has a need for it, they handed it my way and I am currently in the process of flushing the hard drive and rebuilding it with OSX. Sweet.
