The current DVD release of Wings Of Honneamise is pretty sub-standard, with numerous color, sharpness and interlacing issues.

Has anyone out there done a better transfer based on the laserdisc?

Does someone here own the laserdisc, and would you be willing to help do a laserdisc>DVD conversion?

I don’t have the laserdisc, or a laserdisc player, but it seems like this aging movie really deserves a nice preservation, along with any extras (commentary, original Japanese language, selectable dubbing/subbing, soundtrack, etc.) that are available.

Manga's DVD license of Wings Of Honneamise has expired. The rights now belong to Bandai Visual USA. With any luck they should release a much better version in the future. Although, in the meantime, I think a laserdisc preservation is a good idea.

Yes, Bandai Visual through their US subsidiary will be releasing the movie soon. Just expect to pay $80 for it!

Just to let any aussies reading this thread know, it looks like Madman will be releasing this here in Australia also. Here's the excerpt from the email newsletter:

The Wings of Honneamise:
The Royal Space Force finally has a home on DVD! A classic Studio Gainax (NEON GENESIS EVANGELION) title, this oft-requested film has been fully restored to pristine condition and will be available late 2007

This is great news!

Was there anything on the laserdisc that is not anywhere else? I have had a hard time finding details on the laserdisc, other than that it exists.

Shouldn't the DVD version be a better point to start a restoration project from?

andy_k_250: if you have the DVD, cut a VOB sample with something like DGIndex or ChopperXP, upload it somewhere and post the link here. I'll then fiddle around with it and post an Xvid or x264 file with the results of my filtering.

I own the r1 dvd and it's a horrid transfer. I need to hunt down the ld for it to see the difference, but it has to be better then the POS dvd I have of it.

I'll just wait and see what the $80 Bandai DVD might yield soon.

Oh, I'll see about the new dvd, but I have reservations about spending $30 on a game, let alone $80 on a single dvd. But, to each his own. lol

Yeah, well Bandai is runned by a few idiots who'd think we'd pay the same price the Japanese will. It just doesn't work here!
