I think this is referring to the THX release cleanup (which was ultimately done as a preparation for the special editions). This cleanup also made way for mistakes like white tie fighter laser blasts in the pursuit of the falcon in ESB. So sloppyness when it comes to OT treatment has quite a tradition by now.
