Making of Star Wars (New Book) Discussion

Author
Time
Figured might as well make a thread to discuss this new book on the origins of Star Wars.

Flipped through and there's plenty of material to make this a worthy purchase. The hardcover does have extra material; if you need to save some cash what you loose out on are pages of storyboards and a couple pages of miscellaneous facts from Lucas on SW minutia and a guide to when certain ideas sprang up and from which draft this occured.

After having recently read The Secret History of Star Wars, i was intriged by what the 'real' "Journal of the Whills" document was going to be. Unfortuantely the presentation of the Journal is not going to help the cause, what is provided looks like a photograph of a photocopy of the handwritten line. Annoyingly many pictures of actual pages of the hand written scripts are cropped to show the pertinent quote, would rather see the whole page... but you take what you can get.

Really digging the fact that one script started out with the phrase "Deep Space", would make for a funny subtitle.

Much of the book seems to stem from an exhaustive series of interviews done by Charles Lippencott for an unpublished work, the poorly worded "Lost Interviews" through out production of the film (75-78), and hopefully Rinzler discusses how certain decisions affected the evolutionary process of the work. Maybe Hyperspace will makes these interviews available in the next few years.

The book looks great, should be a fun read.

I broke down and ordered the hardcover from B&N today - I bought a B&N membership to take advantage of a ridiculous coupon on the "Sculpting a Galaxy" boxed edition with all the extras, and member price is ~$47, but there's a 25% off coupon out there (Google "Barnes and Noble Coupon", you'll find it), which brought it down to just over $35 with tax, and free shipping. That's over 50% off the cover price, and less than I'd pay locally for the paperback.

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon a few months ago (hardcover). It's supposed to arrive in early May.

I stopped by the nearest Borders just to flip through the book this morning. The only thing I actually read was the Peter Jackson foreward, which was quite fun. The pictures were amazing to look at if only because I hadn't seen many of them before.

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon.co.uk and it's had a predicted delivery date of this week for months. This morning I got an email saying they are not getting it in and are now stated 4 to 6 weeks delivery! This is crap. Looking elsewhere but it seems to be the same in most places.

Damn.

UPDATE: I've called Ebury Press and they say they have plenty in stock!

Play.com - No Stock
Tescos - No Stock
Waterstones - No Stock
Amazon.co.uk - No Stock

Hmmm.

UPDATE 2: After calling more stores with no stock I called Ebury Press back and spoke to the person in charge of marketing the book. They were very suprised to hear the news. I told them they had better contact amazon etc. Amazon are now going to get back to me later today.

I've never felt more nerdy. I'm trying to decide whether to get this or the new Tolkien book.

I suppose I have to go with this. Getting it this week with my BN membership and the member coupon they sent me (15% off any one item expires 4/29) makes this go from $75 to $42. Too much a limited time bargain to pass up.

PLAY.COM UK have now got it in as far as I'm aware and are packing them for distribution according to my customer account status on their site. I can't believe that AMAZON are so sloppy!!

I am reviewing a copy of the book for the AFICIONADO website shortly.

I didn't know much about the book until I read Moriarty's review on AICN, and now I really want the hardcover edition, if not just for this pic in it:

That's awesome.

I haven't bought a SW book in some time. I think ROTS was the last one.

That photo is in the soft cover version as well. The book failed my test though. It had the term "Star Destroyers" in it, and if it's about the making of Star Wars, they should be "Imperial cruisers".

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

From my perspective as a prop collector this will be an invaluable book.Very interesting with a lot of great detailed information and pictures of the bulding of models and such and there are some pieces of mine feautured in there I believe such as some interesting stuff about the pyro X-Wing models of which I have some examples and the construction of threepio is also detailed quite well I understand.I recently acquired an original third draft script as well so it will be interesting to see what it says about the evolution of the script from original through drafts to the final version.
Definitely a worthwhile purchase.Mine should be arriving soon.

I swear that picture of Harrison Ford is going to give me nightmares. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I first noticed what was different about that picture. I have a hard time believing that that's not some Photoshop job!

There is no lingerie in space…

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The good news is that there are plans to do ESB, ROTJ and Indy versions of the book if this one is successful.

I've had the exact same thought... so, was it really a fun-photo, or what does a possible caption say?

Well that's nice to know but I'd appreciate a source. Also, I heard they already did "Making of" books for the other five films to coincide with their respective releases.

HERE'S your source:

With the 300-plus page tome now completed and readying for release, Rinzler already has designs on several other "making of" books fans can look forward to, including upgraded versions of the original Making of Empire and Jedi books printed in the early '80s. "If we're able to do it, the basic idea would be to take the existing texts and add text to fill in the gaps," says Rinzler. "Then we'd throw in tons of the photos and documents that have never been seen before. Those would be fun to do."

First, however, Rinzler is busy researching a second set of books chronicling the making of another famous trilogy -- or rather quartet -- of films. "That's the number one priority for the moment," he says.

What are you talking about? Lucas used the term Star Destroyer in all the early drafts of the screenplay. Just because the term didn't make it into the dialogue of the finished film doesn't mean he wasn't using the term at all. Notice that the term "The Sith" never made it into the film either.

Is that the one that Gary Kurtz auctioned off a few years ago by any chance? I really wanted to bid on that but the auction closed before i found out.

No this is one I acquired recently and has been held by e crew member's relative for around twenty years or so.Be VERY careful about the things that are auctioned off by Gary Kurtz and Jason Joiner. They are rarely what they are claimed to be.
As I say I will be adding pics of certain scenes from the script to my site soon.
