I would gladly help with the soundmix check to if you think two sets of ears is better than one set.

It's open to anyone really. having more opinions really would help.
The mix still isn't 100% complete in this clip. there are some stereo Fx yet to go into it to surround & l/r channels but i would like some opinions on how its sounding so far. The music for the opening titles is a new mix and not taken from the DVD, but a surround mix from the audio cd's which, to me, sound higher quality.. The reversed music in the surround channels have been fixed (in the most part is a new resynced track from the audio cd's). Only the center channel remains for the most part. I've added ambient FX to the surround channels (which for the most part on the 2004 dvds was just the reversed music & some sound FX.)

With this i'm aiming for a more theater surround experience, with more Fx in the rear channels when they should be, to give more of a feeling of being in the movie.

Also this is a quick video render and a few shots have been rendered with the wrong source selected ( the first few shots of 3po & R2 have the other droid looking bleached and not the finished colour). Oh well.

heres the video file:

Adywan,

I don't know if they're quite what you're looking for, but I was able to record a couple of landspeeder effects from the Behind the Magic CD. One is a flyby effect, the other is more of a start-up effect.

I had to record the clips through my speakers (didn't know how to rip them from the CD), but I cleaned them up as best I could. Hope they're good enough quality and that they help you out. They're also in mp3 format -- hope you can work with that (it was that or wav).

speeder effect 1
speeder effect 2

EDIT: I just stitched this clip together from a few separate seconds from one of the episodes of the Star Wars radio drama. If you're looking for a "consistent" speeder sound to use in the background, this may work. I also included another short speeder sound from the same episode.

speeder effect 3
speeder effect 4

If you'd prefer, I could upload the entire segment that I used from the radio drama so that you can edit it yourself... let me know.

Hmm, crawl seems a bit sped up in the video; pry just me. I am damn near technology-illiterate (at least in this subject,) so don't take my word for it.
*didn't burn, only watched on comp*
Didn't you say you'd color corrected the explosion shot on the Tantavive (spell)? Possible wrong render shot?
I don't know what to think of it - I like the newly rotoscoped laser blasts though.

Actually the crawl is slightly slower, it just appears earlier . the crawl now appears along with the music cue to match the pre ANH crawl. the crawl after the ANH addition caused the music cue to be off and i always preferred it the way it was originally intended. So for this to happen the speed was slightly slowed or it disappeared too fast.

No this shot is the final one and it has been corrected. Just look at this comparison and you'll see just how much the colours have changed:

corellian77, many thanks for the landspeeder clips. they were just what i was looking for.

Ick, I forgot how bad the 04 version looked.
Again, I really like the new lasers. They look amazing!

Adywan, I watched the test clip and the sound mix is sounding pretty good. I didn't notice any glitchs or anything like that. And the immersive surround sound effect you were hoping to achieve, well let me say that you have achieved it and to great success. It feels like the sound is all around me rather than muddled like the original. I also love how you have amped up the star visibility in our edit. It really is something to be able to see them so clearly once again. Keep up the good work!

It looks great on the small TV. I was saddened it ended so soon. I'll be plugging it into the HD 64" with 5.1 tonight.

Just watched the clip. Sounds good, but I think I'll need the entire movie to really form an opinion.

Joking aside, it sounded great!! I can't really think of anything I would change. As some of you may remember Infodroid and I rebuilt the soundtrack for the mace/palp duel in ROTS, which sadly will never see the light of day now

Anyway, I know how hard it is to build the soundtrack from scratch and get all the levels right. Excellent work!!

To comment on other things, I was suprised how clean the video was and the color correction is great. For reference, I watched the clip on my 8ft wide screen with a Panasonic LCD front projector, Denon 5.1 receiver and Boston Acoustic speakers.

Adywan,

I figure you're doing this already anyway, but wanted to double check...

It appears that your main source material is the PAL DVD release. Please make sure that any material that isn't already sourced as PAL (additional music, dialog, sound effects) are correctly pitched up (~4.2% as you know) for your PAL release. This will ensure that the NTSC release will sound exactly like it should once you encode that version. A lot of people here in NTSC-land don't notice much difference from the the PAL speedup, but those like myself hear a huge difference. And it may sound especially odd if some of the additional music gets pitched down on the NTSC encode if not properly adjusted the first time around.

Again, you've probably already taken this into consideration, but I thought I'd throw in my own 2 cents.

Done. It looked and sounded great. It is not Star Wars the way it was, but the way I want to remember it. The sound was the best part. The additions, such as the PA system aboard the blockade runner sounded natural.

On a side note, weren't you going to change the tractor beam shot so the rebel ship didn't looked so locked down?

A small suggestion: Have you considered dropping the boarding sound effects just momentarily before the door erupts into a shower of sparks? I think a single beat of silence after the final rumble of bass disipates would add greatly to the tension and also to the sudden shock that follows. Rather than eliminating anything, you could easily extend the static shot of the door to draw out the anticipation somewhat.

And another thing: I've never really noticed any of the continuity blunders that seem to be common knowledge around here and was wondering about 3PO's lower right leg. Has it always been paler than the rest of him or just during the Tantive scenes?

Carry on!

On the subject of formats any chance of a 640x272 avi @ 24 fps version for those of us that use portable players?

ady, sound aside, a few crits from the clip. considering I have also spent months looking at this scene I know it pretty well.

1) frame 3320 to about 3395 there is a noticeable shimmy to the leading left side of the nose of the star destroyer above the Tantive. ovously you've masked here and something is ever so slightly showing through from the background.

2) frame 3600, the laser flash is tinted and not pure white.

3) motion tracking between tatooine and the atmosphere haze in the master establishing shot is off and doesn't line up right. the haze still has motion after the planet has stopped moving. its only a few frames out but....

also the curvature of the haze doesn't match the planet.

Just in case this hasn't already been said, those of you already asking for different versions of this project when it's finished (i.e. NTSC, iPod, portable, etc) really should be ashamed of yourselves.

Adywan is putting SO MUCH hard work and effort into not just the creative changes he's making, but he has had to learn a LOT of new software to pull off all his video, audio and special effects wizardry.

The LEAST any of you who want different formats can do it is figure out how to convert it yourself. This is very easy to do, and spending 5 minutes with a search engine will tell you how to do it and point you to the FREE software that will do it for you.

Asking Adywan to do even more work because you can't be bothered to learn something, in my opinion, is lazy at least and disrespectful at worst.

second the motion.

its hard enough sticking at a project long enough to finish without having to worry about what versions to do.

I agree with that with one caveat, NTSC....I don't think you can lump requesting a NTSC version in with other requested formats like iPod versions or the like.......rude? maybe but not unreasonable to ask for NTSC....besides Adywan already said he'd be doing a NTSC version after the PAL was done....or at least I thought that was what he said....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I think i need to clear a small matter up before i go any further. There will be only 2 versions that will be doing. PAL & an NTSC DVD versions. The PAL will be the first release followed a short time later by the NTSC.\I will leave it up to someone else to do other conversions.

I'm relived that the new sound mix is on the right track. It's going to be a while before i can afford a new surround system so I'm glad that the surround headphones are doing their job. The PA announcement is actually from the radio plays and i added some Fx to convert it from normal speech to that of a PA & thanks infodroid for the speeder sounds. they have been very useful. I did have these sounds that i downloaded from somewhere but they became corrupt so its good to have them again. I think they were from one of the games. I know that i downloaded ripped audio from Star Wars galaxies but none of the ambient sounds from Tatooine worked, along with a lot of the others which would have been invaluable for this edit. Has anyone managed to rip the audio from Galaxies successfully and would be able to somehow post them for me?

Tellan, i know there are a couple of issues with the Tantive shots. these were actually some of the first shot i ever did so theres a strong possibility, if i have enough time, that i will be recompositing the whole sequence.

ady, if you need spacey sound effects ie final battle stuff, the xwing games are a good source.

all of the in game sounds are stereo wav files so there's lots there like hyperdrive, engine noise, lasers etc.
