Wedding Speeches

A mate of mine is getting Married quite soon and although I'm not the best man I've been asked to give a short speech along with a few others, Approximately 5 minutes. I was just wondering if anyone whose been through this might have any useful advice. Given the varied age group here I'd assume someone has...

Obviously I don't want to overshadow the speech of the best man but as a groomsman I want to do pretty well.

Totally aim for overshadowing the best man! That'll teach your friend not to make you best man, right! Or maybe there is no rivalry there, in that case, I have nothing to contribute to this thread. Sorry.

Actually you are correct. I just didn't want to come off sounding petty

You could always go the funny route. Something like "You remember when we nailed that one-legged, syphaletic prostitute the day before you met your new wife?", etc.

Hmm, as far as I can tell, generally the best man is supposed to give the best speech at these things. People merely expect the groom to be happy about finally being married.

If it is a religious ceremony, you should include this line at some point in you speech:

"Jesus this, Moses that, Abraham hit me with a wiffle ball bat."

5 minutes? That's going to be a long speech. My speech lasted maybe 3 minutes and my best man's on-the-fly speech was less than that (I forgot to tell him he had to make a speech, but it worked out pretty well).
