Last year I was at the Motor city Comic Con in Michigan and there was a huge FBI bust of all the bootleggers. The whole thing tooks hours and I saw them cart away thousands of DVDs into a Uhaul. It included many fan edits.

I know most of you kids don't give a damn about anything besides Star Wars, which is why I bring this up.

Here's a link of DVD's TR-47 is selling which includes everything from Deleted Magic (karma is a bitch, btw) to Jambe's stuff...it's disgusting.

Maybe I can spell it out for you guys - when people like this are facilitated, they threaten to wreck this hobby for all of us. Think about it. You are not legally entitled to any of this material, despite what you may fool yourselves into thinking or saying to make yourself feel better. At the end of the day we're allowed to exist because fan edits and preservations are pretty much under the radar, but when scum start selling edits, that brings attention to us. Bad attention.

So, when you see this sort of thing, take action. Apathy can kill all of this.

I know, that is the real kicker. I have no doubt that it is eventually going to happen, it is more a question of when. And it will all be because some baboons (no offense meant towards any real baboons) couldn't resist making an easy buck. I hear about comic con busts all the time, I can't believe people are still dumb enough to sell stuff there. Do they get fined when this happens? Or just a slap on the wrist and all their DVD taken away? I think they should crack down on crap like that rather than sueing eleven year olds for downloading limp bizcut songs.

At the situation I saw all of the dealers were handcuffed, read their rights and hauled off in a buss to the police station.

When I confronted a guy at the Flashback Weekend convention in Chicago last year and saw him selling copies of the old Twilight Zone DVD that DJ made (dumbass had the cover that I had whipped up for DJ, which is why it drew my attention) I asked him if he had ever been busted for selling shit like that. The cocky son of a bitch said that whenever dealers like that get busted, they get taken away as a show for the people at the convention. Then all that happens is they get their show stock taken from them and get sent on their way. He said it is all a show for the people and that nothing ever really happens to them other than losing the stuff that they have there at the show which is nothing to them as he said most dealers have whole storage units full of stock to hit the next show on the road. He said that he had gotten his stock taken six times and he had yet to be prosecuted for anything. I went and told the guy that was running the show that this dealer was selling nothing but copywritten material at his booth and he ended up not being there the next day when the convention opened. Small victory? Maybe. But it was a few thousand bucks less (this is not an exageration of what these clowns make in one day at a big show selling these things for $15 a pop) that this bastard made that weekend. So, if you see this at any show you go to, tell someone. If they don't do anything, call the cops. Eventually someone will start getting the hint and it will stop.

As for this sell.com, if you notice, nowhere in their selling rules does it say anything about not selling bootleg material. I think someone needs to get the studios hip to this site the way they are to eBay. Because obviously no one has noticed this place yet.

TR47 deserves to have the dvds he's selling shoved up his ass.

TR47 deserves to be publicly chained to 4 4x4s headed outward in separate directions at an intersection and rent limb from limb when the drivers peal off at the same time. On national television.

While TR-47 is the worst of the offenders, he's not alone. There are a lot of people who have been caught doing the exact same thing, so the issue is more wide spread than one ex-member.

However, if there's two things I've learned in life it's that if you do nothing you're just as bad, and karma is a bitch.

Or a Saddam-style hanging. It could even be an execution in the form of letting he-she OCP give him a blowjob.

Just out of curiosity, what was OCP charging for his releases? Was it more than say, the $5 that I have seen other members sometimes charge to send things? Was he selling more than just his releases?

Just curious.

OCP asked 10 dolars for a single layer DVD, 20 dolars for a dual-layer DVD and 10$ more for a cover. And he sold a lot of other bootlegs, even copies of officially released stuff

Yeah that's about right. True, there are others we know of who are trying to sell fanedits, but seems to me TR47 is the most publicly known out of them.

A simple solution would be to offer all the dvd's that he does on all the same sites altogether in 1 package at cost. That way the preservation/passion is spread, a lot of fans are made very excited & happy by that great deal, and nobody makes any money from it.

Anyone think I would run into any issues ( copyright, MPAA, ect... ) if i were to set up a way that gave these things away FREE?
For example:
Say I was to set up a fan site for any of the said movies.Say once a month I set up a contest for 5 free copies.
Lets say word gets out and we see 'potential buyers' make way over to my site and not only enjoy the fan site, but take part in trying to get free copies.
Could word get out too much and get me into any trouble for distributing copies even though free?

Just looking for ways to get these scum from making anymore money on these things.

Easier if you set up a "free" eBay or Sell.com auction every time one of these popped up, so it is directly underneath the sellers item.

Put something in the title like - "Howard the Duck HD2DVD Free!" and anyone who finds the sellers auction will find that.

Then, in the item description just put that you're willing to send the disc for free, just ask for postage which will offset any eBay listing fees.

It's so crazy it just might work.

Either way....... but what I need to know is can I still run into a copyright issue even though I am giving them away at no charge.
You can bet that if I do it in a way that pisses off the sellers, they will be sure to direct the proper people my way and even though I am giving them away, it may be said it is not mine to give away.... maybe, I don't know the deal.I just want to make sure.

It is definately illegal, so yes you could get in trouble for it. I would think the website route is definately the wrong one. Cassidy's idea about setting up an ebay auction every time one of theirs pops up would probably be the way to go. It is still illegal, but so far ebay doesn't seem to have much interests in cracking down on illegal DVD sales, so I don't see why your case would be any different. You would also have a good case that you were not selling them for profit, but giving them away to help prevent others from profiting illegally, but I am not sure they would see that as fair justification. I wouldn't worry about people like TR-47 trying to report you because you are ruining his auctions, they are in the same bed and stand to get themselves in trouble too.

had to reply to this cuz i thought of a good solution for e-bay and other auction sites. List the exact same disc, but put the price really high, so no-one would really buy your copy, but in the description put instructions on how to get the dvds for free. Torrent sites, rapidshare, this site, or the other. that would stop people from buying them if they knew where to get them for free.

The only problem with the eBay deal though is paying eBay even though I make no sale. They charge a listing fee.Although not a huge fee, I would still need to pay out for something someone is getting free.
I only wish these places allowed comments without having the seller choose to list them or not otherwise we could just post all over the place that they can get the item free.
I'm getting so into this because these guys are ripping people off big time now.Buyers want these latest movies so bad that they are paying big money for them.If they only knew they could get them for free.

^ Which is why I said that you are auctioning the postage for the discs!

Say something clever like - "Building Empire - Free! $2.50 Shipping"

The $2.50 covers your listing fees, and problem solved. In fact, you could charge for shipping exactly the cost of the listing fee, that way there is no profit, however small, being made at all.

Sell.com seems to be a US only site. It doesn't seem to let people from the UK join up, which is weird as sellers offer shipping to the UK.

Am I missing something or is there a way for those in the UK to sign up to it, otherwise we'll have to leave the US members to police that site on their own?
