For the first group, even the second two films were an intrusion of sorts. This is my father - he still insists that "Darth" is Vader's first name.

I'm in the second group. Han shoots first, damnit, but I don't flinch at the title "A New Hope," and I'm happy to tell you why a planet of Ewoks is better than a planet of Wookies.

As for the third group, that's my brothers, but I'm not sure there is much consensus opinion, apart from "Natalie Portman is hot." I defer to bkev et all.

Oh, and I'm 26.


I would fit into that second group, because I am too young to have seen the first film in theaters. But I sure grew up with them. There is a picture of me when I was two sitting under the Christmas tree with the Kenner X-Wing fighter my parents got me (it was missing the guns and canopy, so that must have got it at a garage sale or a thrift store), I still have no idea why they got me a such a toy at a such a young age. My dad or older sister who were both mild SW fans must have thought it was cool and decided to get it for me. Obviously they didn't let me play with it when I was two, or it would be in pieces by now. I have so many memories of that stupid thing, still have it too.

Anyway, my point is I easily fall into that second group, but I would never, even when I was younger, have attempted to justify Ewoks or explain why they were better than a planet of Wookies. Also I grew up with Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. A New Hope was never widely used (at least in my tiny corner of fandom) until the 1997 S.E. release. It didn't even appear on the box until the 1993 THX release. It was such a tiny part of the crawl most of us didn't even notice it, or if we did we didn't see it as that big of a deal.

In fact, for some odd reason I had about five or six Chewie figures, all with various levels of discoloration (those old Kenner figures had a tendency for that) and I would turn my Ewok village (I don't care what you think about the Ewoks, that was the coolest play set ever!) into a Wookie village. And since my Chewbacca's were all different colors thanks to that weird discoloring thing it they all looked different from one another. I would have much rather seen Wookies tearing Stormtroopers apart than seeing Ewoks thwarting men in heavy armor by throwing pebbles at them, something even at a very young age I make complaints about (kids notice things like that, I am sure I wasn't the first little kid to say "Hey, those rocks wouldn't hurt those Stormtroopers through their armor!"

Hmm, one quick question that maybe someone like Erikstormtooper could give me the answer to, he being our resident action figure guy and all.
Why did those old Kenner figure discolor so much? I guess it was the plastic they used, but two figures with the same date on the leg, and they were both entirely different colors. I remember my Luke's torso turned yellow while his arms and legs stayed white (obviously because of the different types of plastic). One of my many stormtroopers also turned yellow, while all my others stayed more or less white (though all clearly different shades). This is a mystery that has baffled me for the better part of my entire life, and annoyed the crap out of me as a kid.

I'm not sure. I'm thinking of their careers in terms of mainstream popularity and star status. Neither of them were big hollywood names until after their prequel days, so that's what I'm referring to.

I see your point. Usually it's a two-step process: your breakout role gives you enough attention to land a big star vehicle, which solidifies mainstream appeal.

Portman's breakout role was definitely The Professional. She got a lot of critical attention for that part, and was sortof expected to be a major actress, someday. But you're right that she wasn't actually a mainstream star until Star Wars.

In the case of Knightely, however, her breakout was Beckham, and Pirates was her star vehicle. I don't think most people even know she was in Phantom Menace.

Very true. Now that I think of it, in some ways their careers parallel the careers of the original star wars cast.

Ewan's definitely the new Harrison Ford. He just needs his own indiana jones to make the comparison complete.

You're right on the money. Our society is angry, spoiled, mean, and opinionated these days, but a thorough and proper discussion of how that's come to be, it's repercussions - current and future - is beyond the scope of this board.

Look at our popular culture these days. All of it is voyeuristic gang mentality. TV shows teach people how to gang up on their fellow citizens and insult them, defeat them, vote them off, eliminate them, and humiliate them. Then they laud the ones who do so. Meanness and anger are rewarded, civility and compassion are seen as weaknesses. people don't tune into to American Idol because they have an interest in the next recording contract - they want to see people make fools of themselves, or to see Simon insult someone until they leave the stage in tears - and it's all offered as entertainment.

Everything is about arrogance, entitlement, and attitude these days. The more - the better.

Yet when we turn on the nightly news and see our school children massacre each other - the nation stares in shock and disbelief, wondering what went wrong.


Buddy that is so dead on. This country has become a mean spirited country, whether it is politics or TV it' all about being mean or getting at somebody. I've even exhibited some of that mean spiritedness towards people myself. I can't watch these reality shows because they have nothing to do with reality. Reality shows not involve plots and cliques trying to get rid of each other. You wnt reality TV? Watch Cops, these are people who on't want to be on TV and are not on there for fame or money.

But on to the question, 30 is an arbitrary number some around 30ish like 29 I can regard with espect. It's those people who's first exposure to STar Wars was episode I who think that Lucas is a genius (still) thatI can't relate to.

I'll tell you a story. I'm a member of the 501st and we were asked to do line duty for an appearance by Dave Prowse for a memorablilia store. It was a good crowd. The kids really dug it I asked one kid which were his favorite Star Wars movies, he could not have been more than 12. He said "The original ones" Good answer I said, and here's the clincher, "But I don't like it when George Lucas keeps changing it."
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

(Feel free to ignore these ramblings, i was replying to a post on the first page when the discussion has moved on to page 4...)

There was an internet in the time around RotJ and they had a newsgroup which was used to discuss the movie. Google Groups used to have an archive of the discussion, but i'm having difficulty finding the info... Can't remember if it was R.A.S.S.M. or another group name...

Google Groups Advanced Search you can select the years to search through, the archive starts in 1981, so put in whatever query you want and there are a bunch of sw discussions back then

none
