Wanted: Replacement Vinyl Capes

Author
Time
 (Edited)

Has anybody here had any success in finding a material that matches the old Vintage Vinyl capes? I have several Hoth Stormtroopers and the odd Darth Vader that are in prefect condition except for a torn or missing cape.

I have been collecting for nearly 10 years and have never come across suitable plastic sheeting. It must be out there somewhere!

That's a damn good question. I have none of my snowtrooper capes or my Obi Wan capes. I do happen to have a Vader with a perfect condition cape (no arm tears or anything), so you can tell this was not the one I actually played with. My plastic capes went pretty quickly as I used to fold down the top to make it look like a lowered hood on Vader (he didn't have a hood so it made no sense to have the cowl sticking up).

I would check some of the toy trading magazine classifieds. My dad restores vintage Dinky toys and has to order replacement parts from England.

Yeah, I have managed to find some sites selling repro capes but I would really like to make some myself.

I know we all refer to them as 'Vinyl' capes but there must be a particular plastics name for the material.

Hmm...

P.S My Uncle buried his Dinky toys in air tight containers in his aunties garden, somewhere in Dartford. Oh the pain!

Will someone please explain Dinky Toys? Consider me completely ignorant as to what they are and, comparatively speaking, just as lazy as Shimraa usually is regarding looking it up online.

Only my doubles are missing capes! He he!

Dinky made a series of die cast metal scale vehicles years ago.

The are very collectible and very valuable.

They were also very well put together. In the post-WWII era, the big manufacturers of die-cast model cars in England were Corgi, Matchbox and Dinky, all of which have been absorbed by other toy companies now. Dad's trying to recapture his childhood.

Sounds like what my dad did a little over a decade ago when he started buying his non-sports cards again. He was recollecting the Wings set of aviation cards. He did finish the set.

This is also about the time he went back and purchased the Mars Attacks! set of cards that we were talking about a while back.

I doubt that will happen. How long's it been since the vinyl capes were produced by Kenner? Far too long. And Kenner's old replacement policy is no longer in effect since they were bought out by Hasbro. Not that it would be in effect anyway this late after the fact. As for ordering, it would be far too easy for people to have a "perfect" collection if the company allowed orders of replacement parts for their old figures. That would drive the value of these figures so far down that the allure of collecting them would be gone.

I say try your local comic book store. You never know what you'll find there.
