Well Kuwait itself is far from free and democratic, its run by an elite cadre of shieks, and living conditions for the general population are just as crappy as they are in Iraq. The USA say they liberated Kuwait, but they just returned them to their original dictators, who happen to be friendly with the USA and sell them Oil.
Iraq also attacked Iran in the 1980s with no more mercy or provication then what they did to Kuwait, but the uSA didn't lift a finger because Iran was their big enemy at the time, and the USA was actually sort of pushing the invasion which is partially why Saddam was allowed to take power. Infact many of the weapons used by Iraq during the Gulf war were weapons given to them by the US to fight Iran.
Also many of the supposed attrocities commited by Saddam against Kuwait are exaggerated at best. I recall one major news story from the time of a nurse saying she saw Saddam enter a hospital and shoot murder new born babies while they slept. Infact that was what I remember my parents telling me about Saddam, that he murdered babies. Well as it turns out the "nurse" who was the sole witness to these events was actually the daughter of a prominent Kuwaiti ambassador, and she had never even been to Kuwait, much less witnessed Saddam taking time out of his day to murder infants.
Is saddam a monster? Certainly. But as we all know things are never as black and white as we are lead to believe. I'm so glad this forum has a good cross section of forward thinking open minded people who can discuss this stuff intelligently.
