Please keep in mind, we weren't "redoing" effects just because we can, like Lucas did.

The FX for ST: TMP *were never finished.* That film in on record that it went all the way to the release date in a huge rush just to get it out the door, and MUCH of it was never completed to the director's liking (and some of it was just never finished at all, like many effects shots and sound effects).

Most of the work we did was material that was intended to be there in the first place. We used the actual storyboards from 1978 to make the shots, and everything we did was designed to look like it could have been done back then - we did no fancy CGI stuff to show off.

A perfect example is when Kirk arrives at Starfleet in his shuttle - the release edition has a REALLY long shot of the Starfleet logo on the floor of the San Francisco hangar bay - you know why? Because there were supposed to be shots of Kirk's shuttle flying to the station, but they were never finished so the screen time that was set aside for them had to be filled with something - so it was filled in with a shot of the floor.

Many of the shots inside the Enterprise had nothing but black outside the windows - you were supposed to see section of the ship or, later on, parts of Vger... but there wasn't time to do it so it was left black.

I think it was great to finally go back and FINISH the movie the way it was storyboarded in 1978. We did not add anything new just to make it look cooler.

The number one reason I like the DE is because it finally does away with the truly terrible matte painting of the Enterprise saucer when the crew are walking around on it. All due respect to matte artists everywhere, but that shot looks like it was done by someone who had never seen the Enterprise...just had it vaguely described to them once. Blecch!

Yes, I know ... and I also know that many Trekkies think of the DE as a big improvement. I never intented to criticise you or your work. In fact, the new FX really do look great and have been incorporated very carefully. If I hadn't known the original, I would have never guessed that there are any new FX at all!

It's just that I don't think that a movie should be fixed such a long time after it's release. If it's one year later, ok ... but after 20 years I think it should be left alone as a piece of art that maybe had never been finished and is far from being perfect, but sometimes that's just the way it is. That's how I see it, anyway ... to each his own, I guess.

I only wish that the theatrical and the special longer version had also been released on DVD. All the bits and pieces are on the DE DVD, so surely all the source material necessary has been cleaned up and remastered. I think it would sell quite well ... Trekkies are completists, so there would definitely be a demand for it. Maybe you can pass that on to Paramount or whoever is currently in charge of the Star Trek DVDs ...

Just curious Mojo_LA

When I was doing the Theatrical Transfer from HD for these good people, I wanted to paint out the ugly burnt in subs that were already on the HDTV version using the DC version to clone from, however the shots used - when spock is on his planet - in the DC are what looks to be different takes from slightly different angles, any ideas why?

I have no idea, perhaps when they were doing the DC they found better footage.

I know some of those particular shots were altered so you could finally see that that giant foot was part of a statue (we have a new matte painting that establishes the Vulcan Statues).

It was quite a few years ago, that's the most I can remember.

What about the subtitles? I didn't notice anything wrong with them. Thank god that you didn't change anything ...

I have downloaded the HD version from from BiT-HDTV (two TS files), is that the same source you used for your transfer?

By the way, what program did you use for the conversion? I have managed to convert those two TS files into one large MPEG2 file. Then I tried to convert it into DVD format with DVD Author, but that would take forever and my computer is not powerful enough to handle the process. Is there a way to just change the resolution of the MPEG2 file from HD to PAL, and convert it to DVD in a later process?

I already have the DVD-R version, I'm just curious about the process of converting an HD file into DVD. But I guess that you used a professional program that I couldn't afford anyway.

Er, no he's not. He's talking about an edit he did himself or am I missing something and Mojo_LA is part of the team that worked on the DE DVD?

I was the digital supervisor of the new FX for the Director's Cut DVD.

Does this answer your question ?

MojoLA,

I totally agree your point of view. You did a wonderful and very respectful work on the DE.
I have a question. When the dvd was released, there were some rumours that the documentaries were edited because of embarrassing things told against Paramount or some persons. can you confirm these rumours ?
I love the documentaries on the dvd but I feel they are too short.

Thanks Mojo_LA, some of the shots changed were effect free, didn't see much of a performance change between takes either, but then im not a director, heh

Oso, I just thought the font used wasn't very good - it was 'big and chunky'- and is certainly not what was used in the original, was going to change it to a subtitle track ala DC version and have a 'clean' video sort of like a pre optical added print - but no matter.
I dont know where mine came from as it was passed on to me and there is no station bug throughout, it was 1 file about 12 - 13GB if that helps? Basically I used AViSynth to IVTC and resize the stream then ran it through CCE - or Cinemacraft Encoder is its full name.. there are other easier and cheaper encoders such as the prosumer software Procoder by canopus and TMPGenc that are nearly as good - CCE aint cheap. It ran through at 5 passes on a core2duo 6300 machine - took i think about 15 hours for both pal and ntsc each. Thats it basically... there are tutorials aplenty dotted around this site and others about converting not necessarily HD material but the principles are basically the same in most cases.

Mojo_LA, are you the guy on the restoration documentary on the Special Edition DVD?

@ CW:

That sounds very complicated. I think I'll leave that job to people who now what they're doing ...

I just noticed something strange. I still have an AVI file of TMP on my hard drive, 4:3 ratio, probably taken from the laserdisc. I wanted to compare the subtitles to the ones on your transfer, and guess what? There are no subtitles at all! Very strange ...
