Yes, I still own that record. A lot of people (including me) had a false memory of him reading of the "a long time ago..." line in the actual movie!

According to the CNN story, he was from New Jersey.
I don't think he used a British accent, he just had a very refined, well-educated American accent (much like James Earl Jones').
