I too believe the original scene is the lighter version. I'm not sure how "authentic" this is, but I still have a VHS recording of the world television premier of Star Wars (which aired on First Choice movie channel sometime circa 1980-81). If memory serves, it was definitely a daytime shot; as Coov said, I noticed something was different when seeing the scene darkened to make it look more like it was filmed in the evening.
