EDIT: If I read correctly, it said you still had to do some color correction to the film but as of now, how much of Star Wars is restored up to that point like in the example above? That looks really good, no one would ever guess that was sourced completely from laserdisc.

At the very least, I think the Star Wars filmstock was fading into the pink range. This would (I would think) knock some of the colors out of whack. This (or an attempt to match it?) may be why the special edition scenes have a pink cast to them in the 1997 versions, but not in the 2004.
Or maybe I'm entirely wrong.

The 97 SE was restored to the colours of a pristine dye-transfer technicolor print from 1977 that Lucas himself provided. So although it may be a bit off in some shots it is, i would think, faithful to the original look. The pinkness of the video is i think simply a telecine issue--if you look at the TPM dvd it has a bit of a pinkish hue to some of it too, especially in flesh tones.

The most obvious changes are in the beginning of the film. The canyon scene with R2 and the Jawas was altered in '93 to make it appear later at night. Also, the wide shots of Luke and 3PO outside the homestead were altered to better match the closeups.

A while back I stated that the Japanese laserdisc looked like crap, and you noted that in reality, despite how dirt and discolored it was, that it had a lot more detail to it. Looking at the comparison you just posted between the Japanese disc and the later American LD release, I can definitely see what you're talking about. The later disc looks quite a bit muddier, and some of the details are lost (the texture of the ground, the wisp of hair sticking up on Hamill's head when he's looking through the binoculars).
Out of curiosity, what source are you basing your final color corrections upon? The '97 release, or the theatrical release (based upon stills from a filmstrip, I would think...), or something else entirely?
Oh, and when's your next side update coming?

Could it not be that those scenes were simply brightened during the JSC LD tansfer process back in 1986, and it is the '93 version that is closer to the original?

I'd be surprised if there were any 'delibarate creative decision' to make those specific scenes darker in the 1993 release.

The Laser discs are the closest thing we have to the theatrical version....at least that's what I though the X0 project was somewhat about...to not only preserve the Laser Discs but in doing so we would have the closest version possible to what was originally shown, not perfect but close...

I never even noticed any attempt to make it an evening scene until I saw the SE. That really stood out for me.

Yes, since it is a transfer of the laserdisc. Before the GOUT we only had fan reproduced 1977 opening crawls.
