Lucasfilm's Adventures Golden Era

Hi!

I usually talk on a Amiga 500 Longplays site (Longplay = Recordings of videogames, usually a video-walkthrought that shows how to complete the game) and seeing the Lucasfilm's adventures longplays, I got the idea to make a preservation DVD of these plays... That's the project:

The project will include:

1 DVD (selection Menu included)

- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

- Loom

2 DVD (selection Menu included)

- Monkey Island

- Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge

- Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle

And wherever it fit...

EXTRAS

- Lucasfilm's Golden Era Docummentary (subtitled commentary with images, covers, and all the rare stuff I could find)

As an alternative, I can include the extra (commentary with anecdotes and interesting facts on the realization of the games with images and so) DURING the longplay, as the way Orange Cow Productions (this project is strongly inspired on these works) did the Starwar's DELETED MAGIC, BUILDING THE EMPIRE and RETURNING THE JEDI

How do you think it would work better?

Well, that's the project, any help with material, advices, correction of text, ideas, etc, etc... will be welcomed I have all the longplays EXCEPT MANIAC MANSION : DAY OF THE TENTACLE one... Any help on this or the other stuff (text corrections heavily wanted!) will be welcomed... I know that this is not a film project... but it is, by someway...

This seems to be a cool project. I think forum member daveytod is the resident expert on video game movies. Of course others have done game DVD's as well, so there is plenty of expertice here.

As far as the style goes, I'm not as familiar with the early LucasArts stuff, so I'd like to see it with minimal distraction. I'm not sure a Deleted Magic approach would be best. Maybe that's just me.

This sounds like a great idea.

I agree with Sluggo. Your first option (with commentary and facts as an extra) would probably be better.

Best of luck with this.

This is a great idea!

Since you are familiar with this sort of thing, do you know if there are longplays for games like Final Fantasy VII, Legend Of Zelda or Lunar? That would be awesome.

Would love to see some of these again - can remember tearing my hair out in regards to the Zeppelin section of Last Crusade many years before the internet would have guided me safely through !

Just to distinguish (and give credit where it's due) - Deleted Magic was indeed Orange Cow, however Building and Returning were by Jambe Davdar.

I dunno if this site will help in the search of whatever longplays you need, but it has a lot.

I'd like to see a movie built from the game Grim Fandango.
Hell, someone should buy the rights and make a full movie of it. Pixar would be prime.

Yeah, I agree. I would love for davytod or somebody to capture it and make a movie. I would love to see a real movie based off the game. It has some great possibilities. A lot of really interesting themes were visited in that game. Though I disagree about Pixar being the idea makers. I think Grim Fandango was great how it was, and for it to be a Pixar movie it would have to be watered down a bit, I think it is too mature for Pixar. I think good old fasion stop motion might suit it better than CG. Of course this is all pointless since the chances of it making it the the big screen is none. It is sad such great stories are destined to be lost and forgotten in the past.

Anybody read Ron Gilbert's blog? I really enjoy it because he doesn't update too often, and he keeps his musing short. So if I check the sight every six months or so I can skim through all the new entries in a very short time and sometimes come out on the other end with some interesting info of some of my favorite games of all time. This blog was the place were he admited basing Monkey Island on Tim Power's novel On Stranger Tides rather than on the Disney Land ride as he has always claimed in interviews. His last entry had some interesting stuff regarding Maniac Mansion. He said he was watching a clip over the internet of Maniac Mansion being beat in under 9 minutes, and how it brought back many memories for him. It was interesting to talk about the way some things were in the game and why. At the end he mentioned that he considered making a commentary for videos like that one of maniac mansion, then he said he decided against it. But how great would that be? A creators commentary on all those old adventures! I would sit through each and every one and enjoy every minute of it.

I also agree on the Grim Fandango movie idea. There were rumors about Tim Burton doing one in the style of Nightmarebefore Christmas/Corpse Bride, however those came up a big negative. Had me very disappointed.
There was a longplay "movie" of Full Throttle where someone played through the game and then cut what he captured into a feature length movie. Unfortunately he left out a bunch of major plot points which made the whole thing just plain confusing (at least to me).
