The Burton film does try to follow the plot of the book more closely. I liked the book a lot actually. In it the apes are much more modern, they even drive around in automobiles. The humans are dumb animals just like in the old film, also Nova is taken right out of the novel. But in the novel once it turns out he can talk, he becomes very popular and is welcomed by the apes. Only certain apes are plotting against him. Later it turns out he got Nova pregnant and after his son is born Cornelius and Zira are afraid his life is in danger, so they help him escape in his ship with Nova and his son. After years in his ship with his family they find earth and land in Paris (the book was written by a Frenchman) he is very excited to be home, even though he knows a couple of thousand years have passed since he left. After his ship lands he finds out that earth is now run by apes. The end. So it has a bit of the old and the new (or rather, they both have bits from it) but the ending of Burton's film is very clearly inspired by the book.

I had seen the previews for the 2001 remake and never had any interest to see it. I had also heard from friends that it was awful. Finally a couple of months ago I watched it for the first time, and couldn't believe how much I hated it. Especially lines borrowed from the old film, like "Get you hands off me you damn dirty human" that was pretty painful to watch. The worse part is where that female monkey is dancing for her husband as they are gettng ready to have sex. At that moment I felt embarressed to be watching the film on account of its lameness.
