That's the problem, your getting this from the sun. I remember when they reported a giant eagle coming down and snatching up children. They are in essence, the brit version of Weekly world news.

It says SFX magazine. I see "The Sun" nowhere.

Anyway, it doesn't really mean that Serenity dethrones Star Wars as UK's favorite, but that the majority of people they surveyed liked Serenity more than SW. It is hard to get non biased statistics. If they really asked every single person in the UK, I am willing to bet there would be a lot of people who have seen Star Wars who would say "What is Serenity?" and very few who have seen Serenity but have no idea what Star Wars is.

If only The Matrix was not on that list, I would say the United Kingdom has some pretty good taste in Sci-fi.

I was pleased when I heard this. I hope Star Wars loses it's privileged position. Luca$h deserves it for his success in dragging his "saga" into modern, state-of-the-art mediocrity.

I'm actually kind of glad Serenity won that poll. Gets it some much-needed exposure. Let's face it. Star Wars has all the popularity and brought in all the revenue it really needs to, while Serenity, a great movie in its own right, struggled to break even at the box-office. I think Star Wars can afford to take the back seat for a few seconds.

yeah too bad serenity did not make enough money to get firefly revived or further films made.

i hardly think it is better than the original 1977 star wars which changed movie making forever and made science fiction and fantasy films a profitable business.

You cannot underestimate George Lucas as a businessman in the 1970's he knew there was an audience there for sci fi films and hollywood was to stupid to relize it.

Star wars was a great movie - but Serenity is better IMO. What is with Star Wars fans that sook when something like this happens? It's no big deal.

Star wars here is based on it's merits as a [2 hour] piece of entertainment and NOT what it achieved in terms of advances in movie making.

I have to say that many friends of mine who are film reviewers were telling me how wonderful SERENITY was. I'm afraid I was very disapointed. It was well made, and the cast were likeable enough but it just didn't do anything for me. I felt watching it that I'd seen it all before (there were echoes of STAR TREK, STAR WARS, and Wheedon had even re-used his motley group of renegade hero/rogues ideas from his script for ALIEN RESURRECTION, with a bit of his own BUFFY ass kicking babe type concepts thrown in). Say what you like about the PREQUELS, but there were more brand new ideas, and a highly unique visual style, and at least attempts being made to be different to the Original Trilogy, in those three movies-TPM, AOTC and ROTS- than there were in SERENITY..

SERENTIY-BEST SCIENCE FICTION FILM OF ALL TIME? Sadly, I don't think so. Even if people prefer SERENITY over STAR WARS, can anyone say it was better than such well deserved classics as 2001, PLANET OF THE APES and BLADE RUNNER?

Call me a dumb-ass cynic-but STAR WARS blew everybody away in 1977. I had never seen anything like it in 1977. And I haven't had that same feeling about anything since.....

as a two hour piece of entertainment star wars mightily triumphs over serenity.

a more fair comprison would be which is better Revenge of the Sith or serenity, after seeing serenity i wonder what the hell people where talking about because i was not better than revenge of the sith.

Serenity is obviously part and parcel of the wheedonverse, so i you can take that with a grain of salt. though i would agree with critics that it almost came off as buffy or angel in space, zombies or vampire creatures huh?

I must be the only person who thinks Serenity is mediocre, closer to Starship Troopers than Star Wars. I had no preconceived notions going in and came out feeling no different about the myself, the world, or sci-fi. I'm not saying it was bad, but it wasn't worthy of all the fan-boy hype heaped upon it.

My roommate who's a pretty big comic book fan went to the Comic-Con in NYC and said there were just as many "Browncoats" as there were Star Wars costumes there.

It's such a shame Joss went with Fox to air the series on. They really treated it like garbage. It would have done so much better on the SciFi network (and lasted longer too). Could you imagine a lineup of Firefly Season5, Battlestar Galactica S3 (best show on TV IMO) and now The Lost Room S1 (which I have no idea why SciFi didn't pick it up as series)?

I loved Firefly, but Serenity was just decent.

Like I've said in many other threads, viewing Serenity really benefits from having seen Firefly, in my opinion. Because it hooked me from the word go, and I was genuinely interested in the characters, the story, and the world, but that might have been because I was already attached to them. Then again, though, most of my friends saw Serenity first, loved it, and it inspired them to go back and watch Firefly. I guess it all depends on the individual.

The poll isn't all that accurate I thnk. Consider that only 3000 people responded. Not exactly a large cross section of sci fi fandom I in my opinion. Also, I remember seeing the news to vote on Whedonesque, but not on TFN or Starwars.com.

But I do really like Serenity though and when I voted for Star Wars I saw the running totals after and was floored by the numbers. Serenity won by 61% Star Wars only got 28%.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

Ugh, I'm a sci-fi nut and I'm just not into Serenity. I don't know what it is exactly I'm missing that millions of others online seem to not miss. Maybe you're right.

That villain just reminded me of Morphius and the captain guy seemed like he was trying too hard to be like han solo. I got to stick with my battle star galactica I guess.
