Trouble with WD SATA Raid Controller

Author

Hey guys,

I'd really appreciate it if somebody could help me with this problem. I am having trouble when I install my Western Digital Serial ATA RAID Controller. After I install the driver for the controller I get this error: "This device cannot start (code 10)."

I tried putting the controller into a different PCI slot (not that that would probably matter) and still got the same error. I really have no idea what to do and cannot find any newer drivers than the ones that I got. So if somebody could help me, I would be really grateful.

The obvious - have you tried for an updated driver from the vendor's website? Is the device WHQL compliant? Try the card in another machine and see if it works there to eliminate a problem with the card. If it doesn't work in the second machine it might be DOA.

I did try getting updated drivers from Western Digitals site but that didn't work. This probably won't matter, but I didn't try the drivers that actually came with the controller on a floppy disk cause I forgot those at home, I'm at school.

As for trying the card on another machine, that isn't an option right now cause all of my roommates have laptops and I don't know of anybody that has a desktop. And I don't know if it's WHQL because it came with my hard drive I bought and I don't remember anything on the package showing the Windows logo.

I was thinking that maybe the card could be dead, but wouldn't my computer not pick up on it then? Because after I put it in my computer said Found New Hardware. But thanks for your help and I might be able to try it on my moms computer when I go home for the weekend. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Might want to check this to see if it's on the list:

HCL

Not a chance sadly...could be working enough to be detected by Windows, but not enough to "work" work.

What OS are you running? How precisely is it failing? Is it locking up your machine after you plug in the card and boot Windows? Or does it happen when you connect the second HDD? Are you trying to set up a RAID 1 (Mirroring) type deal? Or something else? Do you have access to Windows install CD?

Sorry I can't offer something concrete, but troubleshooting long distance is never easy...

I checked that list and did not find it on there. I'm running XP Profession SP2 and I do have access to the install disc. To answer your question about how precisely it's failing, after I install it and boot the computer up, when I log into Windows, I get the found new hardware wizard. I go through that and use the drivers that I have, which are not digitally signed. After it installs them it gives me the error I mentioned in the first post. My computer does not freeze up or anything.

The device just will not work and even though there is an HD attached, the computer is not recognizing it. And I'm not trying to set up a RAID, I just need the controller cause my mobo does not have SATA on it. I appreciate all the help Jedi, even if though you could not help me get it to work. Thanks for at least responding.

Hi Shark.

No problem, happy to try to help though at this point I'm not sure what else I can suggest. The card not being on the HCL makes me dubious about it's compatibility with XP. This is where having another machine would have helped (I realize this is beyond you right now). Try the following:

Remove it both physically and logically (from device manager) on the machine then shutdown Windows
Bring Windows back up minus the card
Shutdown, install the card but do NOT attach the other hard disk, just stick with the regular setup you have
Install drivers if possible
Shutdown
Connect drive(s)
Restart

It could be a matter of it's not ready to have a physical drive yet. Give it a shot. If that doesn't work, sadly I've no other suggestions. Good luck.

I've been following this a little bit guys. Let me see if I can help at all.

What's the exact model and manufacturer of the controller card? I'm checking out Western Digital's website right now, but they don't list any controller cards made by them. The one that looks closest is the SIIG. Is that it? It's a 2 channel SATA RAID controller card.

What does Windows identify it as?

The card could be bad, but let's try a few more things before returning it.

EDIT: Signed or not signed, the drivers should work. Also, not being on the HCL just means they didn't submit it to MS for testing. There's plenty of hardware not on that list that works perfectly with XP.

That's why I'm asking him to troubleshoot it. I didn't say that was conclusively the problem. Just that I was dubious about it. Whether it's a SIIG or WD isn't the issue, as you say it should work.

Right, just thought I'd point that out.

It not being WD may be an issue. WD doesn't have any support for SATA controllers on their website. If it's an SIIG or the other one they list, he can check those sites for updated drivers.

Also, he may need to go into the cards configuration and set it for 1 drive. If the card is being detected and is working and he just can't see the drive, that's a step that WD actually lists on their website.

Here is the link directly to WD site about the card: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdad010.asp and this is the model number: WDAD010RNN. JediSage, I have yet to try what you said due to the fact that I don't feel like shutting down and opening my computer up again right now. As to lordjedi, I don't remember exactly what Windows identifies it as but it does put it in the SCSI and RAID Controllers category. As to returning it, I can't actually do that since it came with my HD which I got like a year ago, I think.

Edit: Ok, so I tried what you said JediSage and it did not work. I ordered a card from TigerDirect though so hopefully it will get here next week and I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for all the help and thanks lordjedi for at least responding.

Have you tried entering the cards BIOS to see if anything needs to be setup there? According to the manual, even with a single drive configuration, the drive needs to be setup in the controller.

I hate WD stuff. It's just to finnicky.
