How much better? Probably still worse than 99% of all DVD releases

They look awesome.

They're grainy, scratchy and saturated with color. You know, the way Star Wars is supposed to look.

It's glorious. Dark Jedi's discs are the only Star Wars ones I watch now, because they are as close as I'll ever get to replicating the theatrical experience I had as a kid. And that's what this is all about, right?

Hell, I sometimes dig out my old '82 VHS copy and give it a whirl on my 52" just to bring myself back to reality. And why does it seem that DJ and TheCassidy are the only ones that get to enjoy DJ's best discs? In the words of Gage from Pet Semetary, "No fair, no fair, no fair".

actually Jack,TheCassidy is my partner,he does ALL my artwork now,and helps get together dvd-rom extras, and sometimes does the menu's as well,he is doing ALL the menu's for the upcoming HD2DVD of Death Wish 1-3,as well as found ALOT of dvd-rom extras for these titles too.
we call ourselves Dark\Cassidy Productions now, kind of cool huh?
so that is why he has everything I have done, plus some.
hope that answers your questions
DJ

soon as I get caught up,maybe we can work something out so you wont have to wait so long to get some of these titles.

Heheh... yeah. Just givin ya shit, DJ. (Guess I could have given you a grammar lecture or something, huh? ) And I don't mind waiting for your releases as long as I know that I will someday have them in my collection. You could post everytime in backwards Latin for all I care. Now if you'll excuse me I am going to go watch Howard The Duck on my 52 foot HDTV. It's the tits.

The officially released non-anamorphic DVDs are watchable, but the image is predictably soft. The DVDs also suffer from a great deal of ghosting and grain, and this is very apparent on a large television. Pixilated edging is also apparent in many scenes. Even so, these DVDs definately get watched in my home the most when I am in the mood for Star Wars. In fact, I haven’t really watched the SEs in some time.

I have a 65” Mitsubishi rear projection HDTV. I am playing the DVDs with an Oppo DV-970HD, unconverted over component video. The upconversion seems to yield an ever-so slightly better picture than conventional 480p.

I think these definitely look better than any of the previous “fan preservation” editions that I have seen. Still, this is far from the best non-anamorphic presentation I have seen for a widescreen film. The Abyss is still the best non-anamorphic widescreen DVD in my book.

Additionally, the discs are actually improperly tagged as containing 4:3 material. Non-anamorphic DVDs containing widescreen films are usually tagged as such. The aforementioned Abyss is a good example. Advanced DVD players (such as my Malata DVP-520) will automatically frame the movie properly for a 16:9 TV without having to zoom or scale the picture, even though the disc is non-anamorphic.

The original Star Wars DVDs, however, get grouped along with a few rare releases such as Sister Act 2; in that these DVDs were mis-tagged as containing 4:3 material. As such, I have to manually zoom the picture to properly fit my 16:9 Mitsubishi HDTV.

There actually seems to be some confusion here in regards to the term “anamorphic” and how it is applied to DVDs. There is actually no way to make a non-anamorphic DVD anamorphic. It either is or it isn’t. Using a DVD’s zoom or scaling feature can in no way change the content that is encoded on the disc. It only frames the picture accordingly by cropping the encoded image.

to quote the Angry Nintendo Nerd, I'd rather have a fucking buffalo take a diarreah dump in my ear than watch the destroyed 2004 edition of return of the Jedi.

plus, I recently watched the undestroyed version on a 51 inch HDTV and at times I actually feared I had put the destroyed edition in instead because it looked so good.

Is the Xbox 360 a DVD upconverter? It's a hi-def machine, so I would assume so.

While it's heartening to hear this, I almost don't want to hear it. The only GOUT disc I've actually seen is ROTJ. It looked and sounded pretty bad but this was on a ps2 and small tv.

Every time I walk into the local indie shop, those IV, V and VI are still there, still wrapped in plastic. Yes, even this far into the year. That voice in my head keeps saying things like "it's not that bad of a quality and what if it really is the only time they'll ever be on the format???" Still, that same voice would proabably call me a sucker and remind me of how I'd just blown 60 bucks on laserdisc-to-dvd ports.

well I don't watch the 2006 DVD's because they look like crap on my 56" DLP. Especially when zooming the letterbox picture to fill the screen .However I did run them through DVD Rebuilder and HC encoder to make the 4:3 image 16:9. It does NOT make the picture better technically, but it is a better result to do that sort of encoding beforehand than having my DVD player do it on the fly. It's still not a good looking picture, but it's a little more watchable, and the soft subs(the few there are) don't get cut off on the bottom of the screen.

This is how the OT dies, not with a bang but a whimper.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

With the new XBox 360 upgrade from MS that is downloaded when you go on XBox Live, the system will now upconvert dvd's to your sets native resolution, either 720p or 1080i if your using a VGA cable and an HD set
I know the hd dvd add on does upconvert dvds also.

My family has an HDtv and I absolutely hate it. I can see rather large square pixels in many scenes and the contrast ratio is atrocious. I've basically had to train my eyes to tolerate a blurry and fuzzy picture. Some of my vhs tapes like Titanic with a good vcr on our standard tv look better. I will still watch most widescreen movies on our standard tv downstairs. Our old tube tv was so much better but it was unfortunately wearing out. By the way, how good of an improvement could we expect if we upgraded our component cables that run from the dvr box to the tv to digital connectors like HDMI?

Other than the contrast ratio, most dvd's look pretty good on our HDtv even though we use a portable dvd player with composite imputs. The unaltered movies actually look pretty good. I like how they look better than the 2004 discs because the screwed up colors and darkened image looks even worse with a poor contrast ratio tv. The anamorphic image with the special editions does not look that noticeably better in my case.

I looked at my E. T. disc on our HDtv and our standard rear projection Mitsubishi tv. I had to make the contrast about 25% on the projection tv to equal the maximum contrast on the HD one.
Here's an example of poor contrast ratio with a screenshot from Blade Runner. The top is the original image and the bottom is what I would likely see with the Sony Wega HDtv.

It looks to me like your T.V. needs to be caibrated. You can't just buy a T.V., bring it home, and expect it to have a jaw-dropping picture. You have to adjust the image to compensate for the environment it is in in your house. Also, it depends on the size of your T.V. and how close you set to it. Anything above 51 inches, you are suppossed to set 15 feet back or you will see blocks and the image will look blurry. My uncle has a 60 inch Toshiba and it looks like that, because his couch is 8 feet from the screen but once you get in the kitchen which is about 12 feet away from the T.V. the picture starts to look better. My advice is to definitely calibrate it, because I have a Sony Bravia 32" and the picture doesn't have any of the problems yours has.

I don't know how to professionally calibrate it, but believe me, I've adjusted the settings and tried to experiment with all the color options more than Lucas has tinkered with his films. While adjusting the settings on other tv's has improved the picture, it always looked decent to begin with, not like garbage. No matter what I do, it always looks like I'm seeing a picture through a blurry and foggy piece of glass.
