the original episode I

I noticed for a long time from IMDB that the originally SW was originally called The adventures of Luke Starkiller- Episode I: the Star Wars. What do people think of this? I believe it means the PT was irrelevant from day one. Any comments?

Thanks for the plug, None

The short answer is that no, the prequels were never supposed to be made into films, and Lucas has actually been very upfront about this. In fact, the first drafts of ESB were titled as "Episode II"! The prequel trilogy came into existance in 1978 (possibly even 1979) once Lucas merged the characters of Darth Vader and Father Skywalker aka Anakin Skywalker (they were originally seperate people up until April of 1978).

This makes it easier to at least accept the prequels for what they are, as GL's backstory and nothing more. Even on wookiepeedia the OT is described as the core of the star wars saga, not simply the second half. This is all yet another reason why I don't mind the prequels' existence just so long as the originals are rightfully preserved. Sadly, they haven't been.

Wow, I'm really surprised that the OT is considered the "core" by Wookiepedia. I guess I have assumed that wookiepedia is edited by the same people who edit the pages on Wikipedia, where there is a definite Saga slant to everything.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The OT as the core? That I can accept, but Lucasfilm sees the PT as the core- I mean, it seems to me that the each installment of the PT is treated as its own entity while the OT is bunched up into a single installment. And also, therewas a lot of influence from the Dune books in SW. Maybe the PT was an attempt to kinda do that, explaining the politics of the universe and having a six part saga (Frank Herbert wrote six Dune books)

Well it looks like I spoke too soon. The Wookieepedia entry has since been edited.
