ha! beat you to it with mine!

but

you total git! ;D stealing my thunder like that.

it looks brilliant, I'm just not sold on the whole praxis fire ring. it's been done and done and done. however, it don't half fit this. very very good.

just one crit.

you used the the original grainy death star beam. if you've done all the other changes to that shot, I would recomposite the beam.

I am for mine.

The reason why a praxis ring is appropriate is because with any big explosion and especially with something like a planet ther is going to be fallout. And that is how I see a praxis ring, as a short lived wave of particles highly compressed by energy and crushing space firing out in the only direction possible creating a flat wave. But, to each his own.

The laser is being recomposited, but because i haven't finished the Death Star firing sequence as yet i want to do both beams together so they match. The beam was only added as a temp element so i could show the clip.

But seriously, it does look like we're almost running parallel with the sequences we're working on at the moment

Wow, looks incredible!

I've always wondered about planetary debris, big chunks of matter make the explosion look more substantial, but I've always shied away from it as an effect as for continent sized chunks to fling outwards impressively like that means that they would be travelling at like 20,000km per second or faster.
I wonder what a planet would *really* look like if exploded? It would probably look really fake

Anyway it isn't meant to be a physics simulation, it looks impressive and that is what matters in a 'fantasy' movie like Star Wars.

Just a dumb idea...

I don't recall if there's an exterior shot of the death star right after the planet explodes, but it'd be kinda cool to see the death star, and see chunks of planet whiz by it, both in front and behind. Not gonna happen, but just something that popped into my head.

Ady, after seeing the new explosion, an idea popped into my head (that's two head poppers now) I have to tell you. What if you showed the death star beam striking the planet, but for a few seconds the planet remains in tact... then you show a reaction from leia of the planet not destroyed. Perhaps if you have a shot of her looking unnerved and confident, that could be the one used... after which it does explode, and she expresses her terror. It'd add a little suspense to the moment...

cbaka,
Just received your disc of explosions today. They are perfect. Many thanks for this. This has saved a lot of work for me.

InvaderTim,
many thanks for all your hard work searching through all those Star Trek episodes. That was a great help.

so now i'm back on track with the edit

It's an interesting idea but it just wouldn't have the same impact as the planet instantly exploding. that was the main reason i decided not to use the Enterprise footage and the surface explosions that i was originally going with.

Wow, Adywan... That new explosion looks phenomenal! Sorry to hear the surface shots will be cut, but, maybe you'll put them in the extras like someone suggested.

Great job, as always.

I just have a general objection to a praxis ring. it's been done before and it's not a new thing to see visually, no matter how well ady's done his. kudo's for that by the way. however, I was conisdering pinching the armageddon explosion of the asteroid for alderaan, then a conventional explosion for the Death Star.

anyway, I've fiddled my explosion a bit more and will post it shortly.

That explosion worked well -- even knowing what was going to happen (plot-wise), and having read others' reviews of the effect, I was still startled by it. I'd say that that would be the desired effect of that shot -- great job!

The glow on Luke's saber looks really good, too! Is it just me, or is that a new remote? Also, were you keyframing the glow to track it onto the handle, or did you track it frame by frame? Especially toward the end, it looks like the blade starts overlapping the handle a little bit. Great job with the blade retraction, though, and fixing the jump cut! You've really done some amazing work on this edit, my friend.

Take care,

No, it's the original remote. You're right on the saber blade though. i did track it frame by frame but it looks like the composite sliped downward towards the end. A keframe was added by mistake which changed its position. It's fixed now

Not sure which jump cut you're referring to... the reason the original blade is tracked so badly is that there was never anything to rotoscope it over - it's one shot and Mark Hamill's always holding just an empty lightsabre handle.

I was wondering about the remote too - I thought the change of size was new.

I would also like to point out that the original blade was rotoscoped so badly that it covers some of the hilt making the process of fixing the problem very difficult. Half the time the blade was nowhere near the direction the hilt was pointing.

I attempted this a long time ago until Adywan came out with his first test shots which blew me out of water in terms of quality.

At that point I had created a clean back plate, a clean chewie in the background who was covered by the mis-aligned blade and created a mask of Luke's hand with the hilt. Even then the original blade made that part very difficult to compensate and not look odd.

At one point I even considered creating a new hilt but it was out of my skill range.

I must say Adywan's fix of that scene is fantastic and has managed to turn a very badly done old effect around. I'm sure a lot of hard work went into that 143 frames of footage on board the falcon. I love Alderan's new destruction and loved the Jimmy Smits version too but I gotta say I got more excited when I saw the fixed lightsaber scene. That and the mssing window behind the stromtroopers on Bespin in ESB are two things I've found very hard to ignore.

Thanks Adywan!

Very impressed by the Alderaan explosion, myself.

Can't wait I have more faith in the quality of this release than I've had from Lucasfilm in a long time.

The originals are still legendary but as for the sub par DVD release and all the lame excuses have pretty much destroyed my faith.

Yeah, thanks Zion, that was a meanignful post. Damn forum with no edit button.

<EDIT> Well WTF, there it is...it wasn't there when I tried to edit that first post. Anyways, what I was GOING to say was huzzah for the window fix - I can't believe it took Lucas until the preproduction on RotS to notice that one.

Could someone please tell me or provide an image showing what the missing window is?
