All that incessant tinkering ... where does the madness end????

Oh wait, y'all aren't George. Forgot who I was speaking to.

Sure, LA is not centrally located - in the United States. But really when you think about how many people come from other countries, it makes a lot more sense to have it in a city that is easier to get to from an international standpoint.

If pre-registration sales are down compared to C3, it isn't because of the location. It's because there isn't a new Star Wars movie coming out. The first three Celebrations happened right before the theatrical premieres of each prequel. C2 easily had many more attendees than C1, and C3 had close to twice as many as C2. (And that is why your lines to get into C3 were so bad lj. It's hard to get 40,000+ people into a convention smoothly when people start lining up hours before the doors open. I had a volunteer badge, so I just walked right in. ) C2's lines were horrible (my friend waited in line for 8 hours to get Carrie Fisher's autograph). But aside from the store line, C3 really wasn't that bad.

I would add that people may not be coming also because of the bad experience encountered at the previous 3 celebrations. I only went to C3 so I could "complete the trilogy". It was icing on the cake that George was there (at the time). I honestly hoped that they wouldn't have a C4, but if they did, that it would be in LA so I could go just one day (if I wanted).

I think the other problem with getting that many people in is that they're all only going through 1 set of doors (at Indy). I always use Comic-Con as an example because they regularly have more than that amount of people and until two years ago, they didn't seem to have any trouble getting people inside. Personally I think that's because they open all the front doors and badges aren't checked until you're in the lobby. Comic-Con knows how to do it, but Lucas turned them down because they wanted to have full control. Oh well.

C3 actually had three entrances into the con every morning. If I recall correctly, there was a line on one side of the convention center for fan club people, one on the other side for everyone else, as well as the not-widely-known skywalk entrance from the building across the street. But yeah, even with all that the lines to get in were murder.

GenCon are the people that have handled the last three celebrations (2, 3, & 4) and while they did a much better job than Wizards of the Coast did with C1, they still haven't seemed to get it right. I remember them having to shut down the store at C3 on Saturday because there were too many people in line. The people who only had badges for that day went ballistic but all GenCon did was tell them to come back the next day. I'm sure that's a big reason why this time the store is running 24 hours a day. I just hope the rest of the con goes smoothly. From what I hear from someone in the know, there are a lot of cool things planned, but nothing is concrete yet. Apparently LA is much slower at planning things than Indy was.

Not only that, but they practically got shutdown Saturday morning when they tried to leave everyone outside in the freezing cold rain. The local authorities essentially told them to get everyone inside or they'd shut it all down. I don't know when that line started (it was the line for GL), but it was insane when I saw it at 4:30am (ran down streets and around several buildings).

It was an awesome sight, but it was also completely crazy.

Yeah, I got back to my hotel around midnight and could see the line already forming from my window. I was supposed to meet my friend in it and hang out all night, but I sat down on the couch and the next thing I knew it was 8am. I missed GL but at the same time I didn't get pneumonia from standing out in the rain all night.

You'll kick yourself when you read this then. I volunteered to work that event. I got to see Lucas twice (I had two wristbands because I needed one to get in for the first showing and I had received a second one the night before from the volunteer coordinator for the second viewing). I almost went in for the third show because as I headed back to my room to get some sleep, there was no line and one of the staff called out "Anyone that wants to see Lucas, come this way!" To everyone's amazement, the line had completely disappeared by the third show and there was plenty of room. This was around 10am I believe.
