Does anyone have any experience with people with Alzheimer's? It's a very serious thing, and I know posting info like that here is not easy because of the hell not only the victims go through, but also the families. I'm looking for info on what the onset was like, how quickly it progressed, whether there was a firm diagnosis via MRI, etc.

I'm curious because I believe someone I know may have it, and there's been no definitive answer from doctors yet, in spite of testing. The person may be going to a special clinic soon but not sure what will be discovered.

My grandmother had Alzheimer. I don't remember much from the development because I was very young at the time. I do remember going to my grandfather and grandmother with my brother (they lived 200 meters from my parents house so I walked to them pretty often) and my grandmother didn't recognize us so she wanted us to leave. She tried to hit us and my grandfather had to stop her. This ofcourse was devastating for him to see his wife trying to scare their grandchildren away.
I also remember that the one moment her memory was clear and the next it wasn't. It comes and goes which is very strange. In the case of my grandmother, the progression from the first signs until she passed away took about 4-5 years.

AD: Thanks very much for the info.

The situation above is very bleak for the people involved.

Sorry I couldn't give you more info about the onset and progression. I hope the person you know who may have it will be alright.

Thanks.

Actually there's a small ray of hope right now. It seems that the person does much better after receiving a B-12 vitamin injection. Upon doing further research, B12 deficiency is often mis-diagnosed as alzheimer's or dementia. Finger's crossed! They're going to bring this to the attention of the person's doctors.

Thanks again for the info.

I hope it's the just the B-12 deficiency. One thing I've noticed from having two grandparents with serious alzheimers is that their memory loss starts with short term memory and progresses towards long term. For instance, in the beginning, my grandmother may not have remembered what she had for lunch the day before, but otherwise was pretty much with it. Some time later (many months), she may not have remembered people's names right away, but could recognize faces and associate who they were (friends, sons, grandchildren, ect). After that, it went onto she didn't recognize people (like me) at all but she remembered her friends from childhood, the name of the street she grew up on, ect. Now she pretty much is completely out of it. This took probably 3 or 4 years.

My little experience with it, my great grandma was on her death bed, and when me and my dad came in to talk to her, she thought I was my dad and my dad was her son---and she kept saying she had to go see a friend at the trolly station near geary next to the theater...... (she grew up in San Fransisco in the 20's)...that was devastating---she said it was urgent and she really had to see him there----its amazing that something like that could linger in someones mind for so long...

Thanks for the answers. I appreciate them. Scary stuff, to be sure. I hope for the people involved it is the B12 thing. I gave them some information on it yesterday and they're definitely feeling there's enough of a connection to bring it to the attention of their doctors.

Thanks again.

I think I had Alzheimer's, but I forgot.....

kidding

Anyways, there was an article in the latest Scientific American where they think they may have found some of the genes partially responsible, that may work in conjunction with a possible virus contagion. It's a short article, but some interesting information.

The worst fears have been confirmed...early/mild alzheimer's and senile dementia. Not a good thing.

My grandfather has Alzheimer's as well, so I think I have an idea of what you must be going through.

My condolences go out to you and your family.
