The Muppet Christmas Carol (Released)

I’m just throwing a bone out here. I currently lack the equipment to do anything about this title, but apparently the latest release on DVD features the extended cut (including the song “When Love Is Gone”) only in fullscreen. Apparently the theatrical version (which is the widescreen transfer included on the current release) excised this song, although I still recall seeing this song in theatres. From the information I have, the widescreen laserdisc of this title has this song. Can anyone out there get their hands on the LD and attempt a transfer? I would definitely be interested.

The one post Jim Henson Muppet Movie that actually works, and well.

Has this project come to fruition?

I would be one of those who would love a copy of this with the restored song.

I too would love to see the When Love is Gone scene in widescreen. I'd also like to see the more recent NBC Very Muppet Christmas Movie in widescreen as well, which I guess was only released outside the US. And, of course, anything else Muppet and Christmas that has been mercilessly edited or left unreleased.

It would be a great edit! I love Muppet Christmas Carol, and Treasure Island. Only Post-Jim Henson muppet stuff that is really entertaining and fun, and the new DVD did not do the Christmas Carol justice.

I was going to do this, and someone offered to get me the DVD or tape with the song on. Nothing happened with it though.....

There was another thread regarding this here

Anyone have the Laserdisc?

Frustratingly it appears that only the new R1 DVD has both versions on it (the extended in pan & scan and the cut version in widescreen). The R2 version has just the cut version of the film. So those of us in Europe get an even worse deal.

This would be *excellent*.

Wasn't there an issue with the DVD also cutting part of the Marley & Marley song? That Disney thought their 'hip-grinding' was too suggestive & cut it?

Not sure if that's true, since I watch this every year via an svcd of a vhs rip, and haven't seen the DVD. I did see a copy of the LD at laserdiscshop.com for $30 a while ago.

Anyhow, restoring the movie would make this muppet fan very happy.

On a related note, why is the DVD of "Muppets Take Manhattan" in mono? The previous video releases in the 80's all had a stereo track.

Oddly enough, I actually own this laserdisc, and it's even unopened! I do not have an easy means of importing it to the computer, but I do have Pinnacle Studio 9.

Hmmm...I wonder if there's someone on this board that might have a means of importing it...

Unlike MTI, this stayed relatively close to the source material; I got it on VHS somewheres, I want to watch it around x-mas this year.

I made a DVD-R of my laserdisc about a year ago. Would love it if someone could restore the song back into the film as it always was meant to be!

Let me know who/where to send a copy to.

I apologize for bumping such an old thread, but I was wondering if anything ever came of this preservation project? Hopefully?

I use to have a pre-release timecode of the movie but sadly i cannot find it

Well, a pre-release TC'ed version would certainly be interesting!

But I'd be happy with a widescreen version of the film, restoring the song and anything else they may have cut (and I'm sure other people would be as well).

I guess I'll have to keep my eyes peeled at the usual bt sites and see what crops up...

Is anyone still willing to do an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the complete LD version (if the LD indeed has When Love Is Gone in widescreen)? I could offer the OOP behind-the-scenes special (left off of the recent US DVD release) as a bonus feature.

So this is a very, VERY old thread. But I am obsessed with this project as well. I just finished putting together a DVD that seamlessly combines the 16x9 film with the song in 4x3.

The DVD I created is a direct, lossless copy of the video from the newest DVD, which seamlessly branches to the full 4x3 footage of "When Love Is Gone," and includes both DD 5.1 and the commentary track. I have done quite a bit of video editing so I promise the audio/video transition is 100% fluid. There's no audio overlap or anything unsightly like that. The song footage is uncropped and pillar-boxed, howeve,r because I didn't want to lose any of the picture. So my DVD is as good as it gets without the LD version of that scene.

If anybody knows where I can obtain an HQ file of the song in WS from the LD then I'd be happy to plug that in in place of the 4x3 that's there now.

Another point:

I found a 720p upload of the film from what I can only assume was some random TV airing of the movie recently. It's highly irritating, however, because it is time-compressed and the pitch is actually a full half-step higher throughout the film. (Final runtime is only 1:22:16 to the theatrical cut in WS which comes in at 1:25:49, and the uncut version which is 1:28:54.) Interestingly, the edit used in this 720p TV version to skip past the song was actually slightly different from the WS version from the DVD, and includes a short take of Belle that was originally used during the song in the uncut version. So it seems absolutely true that a 16x9 transfer of the uncut film already exists.

This is the shot I'm referring to

And I saw a preliminary listing for the blu-ray release that states the film's runtime as......drumroll please.....89 MINUTES! So that definitely seems to suggest we're all in luck when the BD finally comes out...whenever that is supposed to be.

It would be fantastic if this project can be completed before Christmas.  This is one I pull out every year and never tire of. I was dreaming one day we would get the uncut version in WS.

Looking forward to seeing how this project pans out.

I'm sorry for bumping this old thread, but does anyone have the DVD TinkerTenor made? I see he hasn't logged in for almost a year here..

and can comeone please tell me how to use the search function? I can't find it which seems odd.
